What is the optimal humidity in rooms?

The relative humidity indicates the proportion of water vapor in the room air. At a comfortable temperature of 20 degrees, the ideal humidity is 40 to 60 percent. In winter or during the heating season, there is often a lower level of humidity in office and living rooms. On the one hand, this is due to dry heating air. In addition, the outside air that comes in during ventilation is drier in winter than in summer because cold air can store less moisture. In summer, the air humidity rises accordingly.

Problems caused by excessive humidity in the room

A brief increase in humidity, for example in the bathroom after showering or in the kitchen after cooking, is not a problem. However, if the air humidity is permanently high, there is a risk of mold, which damages both the building structure and health. Over 70 percent humidity is particularly critical. For some types of mold these are already ideal conditions, others need more than 80 percent humidity. Dust mites and fungi can also reproduce more easily. Avoiding mold and removing mold in an emergency is not so difficult in certain circumstances.

Problems caused by low humidity in the room

According to studies, very dry indoor air can lead to respiratory problems, skin problems and eye irritation. Plus: pathogens, such as the corona virus, have an especially easy game at low humidity. On the one hand, they survive longer in dry indoor air, on the other hand, dry mucous membranes are more difficult to ward off. Humidity below 30 percent is particularly unhealthy. Dust particles also remain in the room air longer under these conditions. Real wood furniture can warp. If you touch metallic objects in the room and get a slight electric shock, this may also be due to the low humidity.

Tip: Don't rely on your feelings when it comes to humidity! Scientists have shown that we cannot reliably estimate the moisture content itself. Therefore measure the air humidity in the room regularly with a hygrometer.

Indoor humidity and the COVID-19 corona virus

A study on the SARS-CoV corona virus, which caused mischief in 2002 and 2003, provides information on the humidity that makes it easier or more difficult for corona viruses to survive in the air and on surfaces. According to medical experts, the results can be transferred to the current virus COVID-19 with a very high degree of probability, since it is genetically very similar. The tests were carried out during the heating period at a room temperature of 20 degrees.

Around 50 percent humidity is ideal. Under these conditions, over 99 percent of the corona viruses had died after two days. Humidity of around 20 percent, which can prevail in heated rooms, whether in offices or living rooms, is particularly tricky. It ensures that 80 percent of the viruses are still infectious after one week and over 10 percent after two weeks. A humidity of around 80 percent also makes it too easy for corona viruses. After two days a clear majority is still infectious, after three days around 10 percent. After two weeks, there remains a tiny residual risk of infection.

Increase air humidity in rooms

Heating air is an important cause of low humidity in the home or office. Therefore, check whether you can heat a little less to reach the ideal room temperature (see above). For a comfortable temperature of 20 degrees you have to set the radiator thermostat to level three. If you cannot reduce heating, there are numerous alternatives. You could place a fountain in the room or even an aquarium in the living room. A ceramic or porcelain bowl with water that you put on the heater also increases the humidity.

Increase the humidity with houseplants

A completely natural method: use plants to improve the indoor climate. This is particularly suitable for cypress grass, but also large leafy plants such as the linden tree.

Humidifiers for living rooms

If you want to use technology instead of nature to increase the humidity, you can use the humidifier. When buying, make sure that your desired model is suitable for the room size in question. Finding out about the quality of the device is also worthwhile. Important: Always keep an eye on the air humidity with a hygrometer and switch the humidifier off again before the value gets too high.

Lower air humidity in living rooms

Proper ventilation to improve the humidity in rooms

In winter, the cool outside air is always drier than the warm air in the apartment. Then you can ventilate four times a day. You don't have to worry about ventilating after a rain shower or fog in cooler outside temperatures. The cool air outside then also contains a smaller amount of moisture than the warm air in the room. In summer, on the other hand, the air outside is warm and therefore humid. Then you should only ventilate early in the morning and late at night when the outside temperatures are lower. Proper ventilation means: opening several windows and not just tilting the windows.

If you or even several people are at home all day, regular ventilation is particularly important. Because every person releases about 1.5 liters of moisture per day into the air through sweat and breathing! Cooking or showering adds more. Then ventilate the room as soon as possible. In order for it to work properly and remove as much steam as possible, you must also regularly clean the extractor hood. If you want, you can leave the ventilation to decentralized ventilation systems. They regulate the air humidity using sensors.

Use dehumidifiers in living rooms

In rooms without windows or with poor thermal insulation, a dehumidifier may be necessary to reduce the humidity to the ideal value. Here you can either rely on a commercial product or use table salt: Place a glass filled with the food up to four centimeters high in particularly damp places.
