Washing symbols, which are sewn into the clothes on small pieces of paper, indicate the maximum stress on the fabric during the cleaning process - without causing any annoying damage. So that you can enjoy your wardrobe for a long time, you should definitely know the care labels from the manufacturer and strictly observe them.

The five existing basic symbols are: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional cleaning - always in the same order. Behind everyone is a special treatment note with different combinations to narrow down the care behavior depending on the textile properties.

Those who are familiar with the washing symbols do not have to worry about what the clothes will look like after cleaning.

Washing symbols for washing

Before you quickly put your huge mountain of laundry in the washing machine due to the hectic everyday life, you should briefly pay attention to the care label. So you can only be sure that your laundry is allowed in the machine if you discover a wash tub with a wavy line on the label.

There is usually a number in the middle of the tub, as shown on the left. In this case, 30 degrees would be the maximum water temperature that insensitive substances such as cotton, viscose or polyester survive undamaged - maximum spinning allowed. You will also usually find 40, 60 and 95 degrees.

Tip: Of course, you can always treat textiles that do not necessarily need to be hygienically sterile at a lower level to save expensive electricity.

If an additional crossbar appears below the tub, caution is advised: In this case, the clothing should be cleaned in the gentle wash program - i.e. lower washing quantity and reduced speed when spinning.

If there are even two crossbeams on the care label, this means: hands away from spinning. A gentle wool washing program is recommended here.

If a hand reaches into the tub instead of the number, this clothing may only be washed manually.

Tip: Fill a washing tub with about 30 degrees warm water and mild hand washing detergent. You can use it to soak your particularly fine tissues and then rinse them under clean water.

However, if the wash tub is crossed out on the care label, this means that the cloakroom must never end up in the washing machine. Instead, it must always be handed in to the professional dry cleaning service in your area.

Washing symbols for bleaching

Yellowish stains on white blouses and T-shirts are annoying, as are stubborn stains. For example, heavy-duty detergent with bleach helps. But be careful: not all fabrics tolerate this treatment during or after washing! A triangle in three different versions as a washing symbol tells you whether the bleaching procedure can be carried out on your clothing.

If the triangle is empty, the fabric tolerates both chlorine and oxygen bleaching. However, if two triangular lines divide the triangle, only oxygen bleaching, for example, can be found in universal detergents. Chlorine bleaching is then prohibited.

If the attached label shows a crossed-out triangle, you should avoid using bleach.

Tip: It is better to use bleach-free agents such as color and mild detergents.

Washing symbols for drying

Do you want to conveniently machine dry your laundry? Then note the square on the care label. This cleaning symbol provides information about whether the clothes can be put in the tumble dryer. If there is a circle within the square, then you know that the piece is suitable for the machine without hesitation. A dot in the circle recommends a gentle program at low temperature (maximum 60 degrees).

If there are two points, carry out a standard program with normal load and temperature of 80 degrees Celsius.

In order not to destroy your clothes, the crossed-out dryer symbol indicates that you cannot machine dry them. It is then better to hang the items traditionally on the clothesline.

In addition to the symbols already mentioned for tumble dryers, there are also care labels for natural drying. They all also show a square, but are interpreted by lines instead of circles. While a horizontal line advises drying when lying down, a vertical line recommends the process on the clothesline. If you also find an oblique line in the upper left corner, this has the following meaning: You should store your washed clothes in the shade to dry.

Washing symbols for ironing

Polyester, cotton, synthetics or a mixture of materials: How do I get the different fabrics undamaged after drying without creasing? Pay attention to the iron symbol in the care label. The dots in it indicate whether and how you can iron the items. If the point is missing, ironing is generally permitted.

Bügeln

If you only see one point on the iron, you can iron, but only up to a maximum of 110 degrees Celsius and all without steam. Two points mean a maximum temperature of 150 degrees and a steam permit.

If there are three dots on the sign of the practical household helper, it is often cotton and linen because they can be treated with extreme heat (up to 200 degrees).

If the iron is crossed out, it must not be used.

Washing symbols for professional cleaning

Chic suits, extravagant dresses or expensive coats are usually not allowed to be cared for at home. Instead, they have to be put in the hands of cleaning experts. Pay attention again to the care label: The washing symbol for a dry cleaning is a letter in a circle. This reveals whether professional treatment should be given or not.

Tip: Take a look at the care labels when you buy. This way you can find out whether you can clean the article yourself at home. Finally, users of professional cleaning have to expect additional costs.

If you notice a circle with a line through it, this means that the fashion must not be dry-cleaned. However, if the circle has no content, it is up to the experts to determine which solution products are suitable for the washing process. Because these differentiate between dry and wet cleaning.

Chemische Reinigung

/ Alhovik

The letter "P" in a circle refers to dry cleaning. In this case, the process may be carried out with a cleaning machine and with perchlorethylene and hydrocarbons. On the other hand, an "F" means that treatment with a cleaning machine may only be carried out with hydrocarbons. All pieces with a "W" are suitable for wet cleaning.

Here too, as with the wash symbol, crossbars can appear below the circle. One bar indicates a mild, two indicates a particularly mild approach. The meaning behind this is: The mechanical load, the addition of moisture and the bath and / or drying temperature must be reduced.
