The third solution is more complex to install, but also more flexible to use: the wireless network.

Comfortable data transfer

The WiFi network works everywhere in the house, even visitors can connect to the Internet with their notebook. Every current laptop already contains a WLAN chip for wireless data transmission, as many multifunction printers, cell phones and some media centers for the TV.

The pitfalls of this convenience of use should be known before purchasing: Setting up a home WLAN is not so easy without certain basic technical knowledge. Because many WLAN routers (the device that is attached to the DSL connection) are not protected against unauthorized persons upon delivery. Which encryption standard do you install? Today's WPA2 is considered very secure, but if you have older WLAN adapters, they may only recognize older versions. The lowest common denominator determines the selection of the encryption system.

In terms of transmission speed, there are also newer and older standards of various ranges and data rates from 11 megabits (Mb) to 54 to currently 300 and soon 600 Mb. Unfortunately, with fast routers, the speed drops with increasing distance.

The best position for the router is in the middle of the apartment, on the top of the room on a shelf or cupboard. In a wooden house you will have a good reception from the roof to the basement, in a house with reinforced concrete ceilings you will probably only have one floor because they hinder reception.

Plugs With the N1 USB adapter from Belkin (right), every laptop becomes WLAN-capable with up to 300 megabit speed

Protection from outside use

Many massive room walls between the transmitter and receiver also reduce the transmission speed. Electrosmog? A WLAN router emits considerably less radiation than your cell phone - which is why there are WLANs in many hospitals, although cell phone use is prohibited.

WLAN routers broadcast on certain frequencies, the number of which is unfortunately limited. There are usually 13 free channels available, which the router selects automatically. If you live in a multi-family house with many WLAN neighbors, these channels are quickly occupied, the neighbors interfere with each other during the transmission. With many neighboring WLAN stations in particular, it is important to protect your own radio network against external use. After all, as a WLAN radio operator, you are legally responsible for your own connection - for example, if the neighbors' children download pirated copies from the Internet via your connection. If you have too many WiFi neighbors, the Powerline should be the right solution.

Decision support: advantages and disadvantages

Data transfer benefits disadvantage
Fixed wiring + extremely fast, safe + inexpensive + less susceptible to faults + no electricity consumption + very easy installation + Depending on the cable length, a very long range is possible - Lines do not look very nice. Space is necessary for laying
Powerline adapter + easy installation + medium to high speed + particularly useful in combination with a socket WiFi adapter + bug-proof - Each adapter requires its own adapter - constant power consumption - range only within one circuit to the electricity meter - depending on the quality of the power cabling susceptible to failure -> loss of speed
WLAN router + very comfortable + usable everywhere + no annoying cables + medium to high speed - not very easy installation - constant power consumption - range may be limited by the construction of the house - susceptible to interference from many WLAN neighbors - not bug-proof if configured incorrectly, misuse possible
