The zipper sticks again? If you know these tricks, you can easily repair the zipper yourself.

In the clothing sector, the zipper is one of the most frequently used fastening techniques. Unfortunately, the zipper system, which usually consists of metal or plastic, causes problems for many people. A situation that should be known to most - you are in a hurry and then the zipper sticks to your jacket, pants or other items of clothing. Sometimes it looks like the zipper is even completely broken. We have summarized all the tricks and tips on how you can repair a zipper and take preventive care.

This is how the zipper works

The system for closing a zipper is called a form fit. With this technology, at least two connection partners interlock. In the case of the zipper, these are two side parts with small teeth, which are hooked together and released again using a slide. A basic distinction is made between separable and non-separable zippers. A separable zipper can be opened or closed at both ends.

The slide on the zipper is broken

If the zipper hooks, you should take a close look at the spot. Maybe just a piece of fabric was pinched. Then just pull it out carefully. Often the problem is with the zipper pull. This can break in different ways:

a) The slide does not close properly

The zipper keeps opening because the slide (also called zipper) no longer closes properly. The cause of the problem can be a worn slider that no longer interlocks the two sides of the belts tightly enough. This happens very quickly, especially with cheap aluminum slides. But even with expensive quality models, the lifetime will eventually dry up.

Tip: In this case, it is usually very helpful if you use pliers to press the slider together. But beware! Do not press too hard, otherwise the slider can break. It is better to readjust a few times until the slide closes properly again.

b) The push handle on the zipper has broken off

Once pulled too tight or shaken, the slide on the zipper is broken. So you can no longer pull the zipper.

Tip: If you have to go fast, you can use a paper clip or a thin thread to make a handle. A much nobler version in the long run is a new handle with snap hook. These handles are available in different versions and can easily be hooked into the zipper - looks like new!

c) The slide is completely broken

If the slide has broken apart as a whole, only one thing helps: buy a new one.

Tip: There are sliders with different types of teeth made of plastic, metal or spirals in the format of three, five or seven to eight millimeters. When buying, make sure that the new slide has the same tooth type as your old model. If you are lucky, the new slider will also fit in the old zipper.

d) The zipper slider has slipped out

Usually, a thicker metal clip at the end of the zipper prevents the slider from slipping out. But if this is defective or completely missing, the zipper can slip out very quickly.

Tip: In this case you have to thread the slider back into the zipper. If the metal clip is missing, it's easy to do. Otherwise, the metal clip must be bent open using small pliers. To prevent the zipper from unthreading afterwards, it is best to sew in a thickening with a needle and thread at the place where the metal clip should be.

e) The slide jams when opening or closing

If the teeth no longer mesh properly, the slider no longer runs smoothly and often sticks to the zipper when it is opened or closed.

Tip: Here you can help with a few home remedies that are guaranteed to be found in your home. Candle wax, soap or pencil leads are useful - they act as lubricants. The graphite contained in the pencils is, for example, a natural lubricant. Rub the wax, soap or pencil lead in a targeted manner over the teeth of the jammed zipper.

If these lubricants do not help, you can try detergents. To do this, pour a small amount of detergent and a little water into two separate containers. Then take a cotton swab and dip it first in the detergent and then briefly in the water. Now distribute this solution on the clamping zipper. Repeat this process until the zipper can easily be opened or closed again.

How to maintain the zipper preventively

With the right care, you can increase the life of your zippers:

a) Clean zippers regularly

Deposits and dirt often accumulate on the zipper after a while. So that the zipper remains functional for a long time, you should clean it regularly. The best way to do this is with water and soap. Just take a small jar and mix the two substances in it until it foams. Then dip a clean cloth into the mixture and wipe the zipper to remove the dirt.

b) Close zippers when washing

An open zipper can easily get caught on other items of clothing in the washing machine. This often causes the teeth of the zipper to bend, which means that it can no longer be opened and closed smoothly. For this reason, it is always advisable to make sure that zippers are closed before washing.

Note: Many people think that small holes in clothing come from moths. Often, however, these holes are the cause of open zippers in the washing machine, the teeth of which damage the fabric of other clothing when washing.

Different zippers for men's and women's clothing

Have you bought a new jacket and notice that the zipper is on the wrong side? Then it is either actually a misconstruction or you have picked a piece of clothing for the opposite sex.

If you consciously compare a men's shirt with a women's blouse, you will often find that the button placket is not on the same side. The button panel is usually on the left for women's clothing and on the right for men's shirts.

This rule is also used for zippers and has purely ergonomic reasons, which already began in the Middle Ages. Because weapons such as swords or swords used to be worn on the left hip because most men were right-handed. So that a man could quickly pull his weapon in a spontaneous fight without getting stuck on the button bar, the buttons were attached on the right side.

The button strip on the left side of women's blouses can also be traced back to historical backgrounds. Women who had enough money at the time to buy fashionable clothes were mostly dressed by maids. Due to the widespread right-handed theory, the buttons were placed on the left side for easier handling, so that the maids could hold the holes with the left hand and the buttons with the right hand.

However, this different direction of the buttons for the respective genders was shaken by the unisex trend. That is why the manufacturers today largely do without gender-specific buttons.
