Circular saws with rechargeable batteries are modern, powerful and - because they have no cables - particularly easy to use. After all, do-it-yourselfers no longer have to worry about the annoying cable or the heavy cable drum with a battery-operated device. In the "Good Choice" test, eight popular models from different brands and manufacturers were examined: from the DIY model to the professional machine for construction sites. The tested cordless circular saws ranged in price from 75 to 370 euros. The following text report should help you to find the right saw for your requirements from the extensive market offer.

Test categories for hand-held circular saws with rechargeable batteries

The cordless circular saws were tested by garden professional Manfred Eckermeier and his team in various categories. The test catalog for the test:

  • Quality: In addition to the operating instructions, the housing and the handles of the machines, the condition of the circular saw blades was checked. You define the work development, cutting quality and tool life for the respective material. Also in the test: how good is the quality of the base plate? What about battery performance?
  • Safety: Since working with a circular saw is not without danger, the machines have protective devices such as protective hoods, riving knives or a run-out brake. These were put through their paces in the text.
  • Ease of use: Questions that are crucial in practice were dealt with in this category, for example: How heavy is the model? Is it easy to change the saw blade? How easy is it to replace and charge the battery? Is the charge level displayed? How loud are the circular saws?

Also important: How user-friendly is the handling of the miter angle selection and the setting of the cutting depth with the cutting depth scale?

  • Ergonomics: Working with cordless circular saws can take several hours - an ergonomic design of the device is therefore essential. Say: How well does the device fit in your hand? Is it light enough or is it too heavy? Are all switch, on or switch levers accessible and easy to operate?

Test procedure in detail

In the test, the operating instructions for the battery-operated circular saws were first of all put to the test, in particular the overview lists and structure. Positive: With the exception of one manufacturer, everyone had enclosed instructions in German.

Only then did the testers take action and start "test sawing". During the test procedure, the testers assessed, among other things, the picking up of saw blades and the quick stopping in an emergency: each process was repeated 20 times. The same procedure was used to set the miter angle and depth of cut. In addition, all switches were tested for ease of use in the test. The most important criterion was whether the cordless circular saw was convincing when used in various work environments and delivered good results. Therefore, each test device had to cut through at least 20 centimeters long through different building materials ten times, while the time was measured precisely. It was also checked how much the housing of the machine heated up during this process.

The accessories were recently inspected and tested for storage in a transport case or on a shelf.

Test winner: Bosch GKS18V-57G cordless circular saw

The Bosch GKS18V-57G cordless circular saw was the clear test winner. The useful device not only delivered quick and perfect cuts, because of its efficient motor and a battery with 5.0 amp hours it ensured rapid sawing progress and a long operating time. With 90 watt hours, this hand-held circular saw with battery generates countless cuts with just one charge. Another plus: the scope of delivery includes a second battery for changing.

Bosch also provides you with a practical tool: a guide rail with which you can achieve accurate results. After all, a straight cut is not so easy to achieve when sawing. There is a suitable, enclosed, very robust plastic case for transport and storage.

However, the cordless circular saw from Bosch has one disadvantage: the complete package is unfortunately the most expensive of all the saws tested.

Price-performance winner: cordless circular saw Bosch PKS18LI

The Bosch PKS18LI is a hand-held circular saw with a battery, which was chosen as the price-performance winner in the test because, despite the comparatively low purchase price, it performed cutting services that were otherwise only achieved by considerably more expensive models. Minor defects only came to light in the equipment: The testers lacked a work light and a guide rail adapter - the latter is unfortunately not included in the price for almost all other saws. The easy handling of the Bosch PKS18LI was convincing: With the bow handle and the front two-handle, even inexperienced hands could operate the saw precisely. A transparent, fold-out extension ("CutControl") with cut line marking and a marking for 90 and 45 degree angles have a supporting effect.

Good to know: The manufacturer Bosch manufactures specially made, durable saw blades especially for cordless circular saws, with which even beginners can get decent cuts.

The only flaw of this model is the battery with 18 volts and 2.5 amp hours, which creates only 45 watt hours of energy storage capacity. A replacement battery is only available at an additional cost. To guarantee longer terms, you would have to invest additional money. The batteries can then also be used for other Bosch machines.

Powerful battery performance: Makita DHS680Z

The hand-held circular saw Makita DHS680Z shone in the test with an impressive performance. With 3.3 kilograms and a 700 gram 18 volt battery with 5 ampere hours, the device is relatively heavy, but provides 180 watt hours of energy. Reason: The battery is included twice with the product. The hand-held circular saw also impressed with 5, 000 revolutions and the "Automatic torque Drive Technology", a technology that adjusts the speed automatically during use. The saw made rapid progress in the test in building materials up to 57 millimeters thick.

But the hand-held circular saw with a battery surprised with even more positive features: Since its motor works without brushes, the saw has more power and a longer service life. The manufacturer Makita also provides an adapter for a guide rail. The powerful double LED guarantees sufficient brightness even in a dark work environment. Another plus point was the practical bracket for attaching the machine to shelves or wall devices. There was a minus point for the lack of operating instructions in German.

Good result, fair price: Einhell TE-CS18LI

The price-performance ratio is also right for the Einhell TE-CS18LI circular saw. The saw is handy and light - ideal for home, garden and hobby. The 18 volt battery belongs to the Power-X-Change series and therefore fits many other machines. The battery has 2.6 ampere hours and achieves an energy storage capacity of 46.8 watt hours. As with all other test candidates, you can change the depth of cut and the angle of inclination without tools. Thanks to the spindle lock, the saw blades can also be replaced quickly and easily using an Allen key.

The LED work light is a practical aid in dark tool sheds or garages. The vacuum cleaner adapter ensures a clean working atmosphere in the cutting area so that users can always keep an eye on the cutting line. In addition, the manufacturer Einhell donated a rip fence and a suitable guide rail for the device.

However, the machine has one major weak point: after switching off all the tested devices, it slowed down most slowly. Attention!

Powerful power transmission: DeWalt DCS391NT

The manufacturer promises its customers that the full metal gearbox and the high-quality ball bearing of the cordless circular saw DeWalt DCS391NT enable both a powerful power transfer as well as a long service life and quiet operation. The last point could not be confirmed in the test: the noise level was on average. The hand-held circular saw with a battery attracted attention because of the scope of delivery with a first-class transport and storage box, which offers plenty of space for accessories.

As with most other hand-held circular saws, the saw blades are a 24-tooth HM saw blade that is 1.7 millimeters thin and should basically perform countless cuts per battery charge. However, the battery (18 volts) is rather weak at 1.3 amp hours, its storage capacity is only sufficient for 24 watt hours. And: If you want to buy an extra battery, you have to expect additional costs.

Light and good battery performance: Makita DSS501Z

In terms of performance, the Makita DSS501Z cordless circular saw is in no way inferior to its big sister, the DHS680Z. It generates 45 watt-hours of energy in one battery and achieves a powerful 3, 600 revolutions at just three kilograms. The light and handy machine is ideal for working on walls and ceilings. The cutting depth adjustment works according to the scissors principle - you unfold the base plate and the housing like scissors.

Thanks to the brushless motor, the drive is almost wear-free. This is very efficient, because in this way the motor needs less energy and less heat to produce the rotation. Using the optional quick charger, you can recharge the five amp hour battery in 45 minutes. If you are busy for a long time, it is worth buying a second battery that also fits other Makita devices. Further advantages: In addition to a bright LED light, the saw cleans the worktop with cooling air and transports the sawdust directly into the vacuum cleaner using the adapter.

Unfortunately, the test also showed that the front handle is only suitable for small hands - people with large hands will have problems using this circular saw.

High cutting capacity: Ryobi R18CS-0

The Ryobi R18CS-0 cordless circular saw is equipped with a powerful 18-volt motor (4, 700 revolutions) and is perfect for sawing panels, chipboard, coated panels and wood materials. It is advantageous that the saw has a cutting capacity of 52 millimeters at 90 degrees and 36 millimeters at 45 degrees. The depth and incline settings can be made without tools. The premium carbide saw blade with a diameter of 165 millimeters and 24 teeth enables accurate cutting results. Thanks to the rubberized anti-vibration grip surfaces, working is particularly comfortable.

The 2.5 amp hour battery has a charge level indicator that tells you the charge level at the push of a button. The "IntelliCell single cell monitoring" is responsible for the highest possible battery capacity and a long service life - users can look forward to 45 watt hours of energy. The durable housing reduces impacts and shields the battery, which also has overload protection.

Good to know: You can use the battery for more than 70 other machines from the Ryobi series.

Inexpensive, good focus: Worx WX529.9

The cordless circular saw Worx WX529.9 is part of the Worx 20V Powershare toolbox system, with which DIY enthusiasts can fully equip their workshops. The saw blade diameter of 150 millimeters is sufficient for a cutting depth of 45 millimeters. You can set up the cutting angle for miter cuts up to 50 degrees. The device allows a cutting depth of 30 millimeters at 45 degrees and 45 millimeters at 90 degrees.

The Worx saw also has a spindle lock so that users can quickly change the saw blade. It also has a connection that can be used to vacuum dust and the like. In the test, the switch for forward and reverse was noticed positively, with which the device can be easily removed again should it get stuck. A soft handle makes work easier. In addition, the center of gravity of the machine is properly balanced with the four amp hour battery (energy capacity: 72 watt hours). A big disadvantage, however, is that the saw takes 125 minutes to load.

Buying tips for hand-held circular saws with batteries

Which hand-held circular saw with a battery you should choose depends primarily on the intended purpose. If you want to saw thick and strong boards, you need a large amount of energy and revolutions. At the same time, this means a higher dead weight of the circular saw. If you want to process different materials, you may need different saw blades. Then, of course, the budget is decisive when buying: Circular saws with rechargeable batteries are a lot more expensive than machines with mains operation. In addition, it is important to know which battery system you want: Make sure that the devices have the highest possible watt-hour number, i.e. the capacity of the energy storage device. Also, don't forget to check the information about the duration of the charging process: depending on the model, they can vary greatly and involve long involuntary breaks.
