Many homeowners want to watch films in their own home cinema. To make this possible, you have to take some precautions. In addition to a good projection surface, the sound system and lighting conditions should also be right.

It is no longer just the wealthy who can afford a home cinema. Even average homeowners are increasingly furnishing a room with a screen and projector. But home theater is not the same as home theater. There are important aspects that you should definitely consider.

TV sets

Nowadays, modern TV sets are equipped with Ultra HD or 4k resolution and even have 3D effects. Depending on the size and equipment, these are available from around 1, 500 euros and are therefore suitable for everyone who wants to spend as little effort as possible on their own home cinema.

Tv devices are almost as big as a screen these days. Pay attention to Ultra HD resolution when buying.

The projection surface

To experience a film particularly intensively, you can choose a screen instead of a television. Because humans have both an active and a passive field of vision. A canvas usually fills more than the active field of view, which has a horizontal angle of 60 degrees and a vertical angle of 35 degrees. Only then does the passive field of vision begin.

You also have to pay attention to the format of the projection surface. Hollywood feature films usually have the popular 16: 9 format, which corresponds to an aspect ratio of 1.78: 1. For the cinema, the films are often produced in the standard format 1.85: 1, which is wider than 16: 9. Only when they are released on Blu-ray will they be converted into 16: 9 format. From time to time there are also widescreen films that are published in 21: 9 format on Blu-ray, so that a screen should have the appropriate size.

Roller blind canvas

Roller blinds, which you may still know from school, offer the advantage that they can be moved in and out quickly. You just have to mount the metal box on the ceiling. However, pay attention to the aspect ratio. Square formats are rather unsuitable. Cost: from 50 euros.

Electric screen

Like the roller blind, the electric screen must be mounted on the ceiling. The difference: It has a motor that extends and retracts the canvas at the push of a button. Expensive models often have image-enhanced options, such as rope tension, which keeps the canvas taut even around the edges.

Frame canvas

A frame screen comes closest to the screen in the cinema. It has a frame made of black felt, which absorbs light particularly well. There are even frame screens that adapt their frame to the format of the film at the push of a button. The only disadvantage of a frame screen: After a film evening, the screen cannot be easily hidden, which is why the frame screen is only suitable for real cinema rooms.

Material of the canvas

The correct material of a canvas should not be underestimated, because it significantly influences a high-contrast and color-true reproduction. For example, gain cloths with a low value below 1.5 are suitable, since the light is then diffusely reflected.

If you only want to watch your films in very dark rooms, it is best to use matt white towels. However, it is better to choose slightly more expensive, woven models here, because cheap cloths can cause reflections.

Step-by-step instructions for your own canvas

If you want, you can also paint a wall with projection paint and use it as a “canvas”.

You need it

  • 0.7 l primer, sufficient for approx. 5 sqm, apply twice
  • 1.0 l base color, sufficient for approx. 5 sqm, apply twice
  • 1.0 l seal, sufficient for approx. 5 sqm, apply twice
  • 1 paint roller
  • Paint tray
  • Masking tape
  • Filler
  • Sandpaper (grit 100, 120, 160 and 180)

Tip: There are also complete sets on the market consisting of primer, base paint, sealer and possibly other accessories (for example from proFlexx).

That's how it's done

Step 1: prepare the wall

Before you can get started, you should make sure that the surface is smooth and clean. To do this, remove the wallpaper and smooth out dents and pores with filler. This should be thinned to 0 millimeters. Then smooth rough surfaces first with 100 grit sandpaper, then 120 and finally 160. Finally, brush the dust off the wall.

Step 2: apply paint

Spread the primer and let it dry for about four hours. You can then smooth the surface again with 180 grit sandpaper. Then remove the dust with a damp cloth. To check whether there are still dents and scraper marks, simply hold a hand lamp at an angle to the surface.

A wide paint roller should be used to apply the acrylic paint, lambskin rollers and foam rollers are not suitable. Pour the paint into the paint tray and take up the paint evenly with the paint roller. Then distribute the paint evenly with high pressure - around 100 milliliters per square meter and coat the whole thing diagonally.

Step 3: seal the layer

Now sand again with the 180 grit. Roll the seal twice and the projection surface is finished.

Suitable lighting conditions

The right lighting conditions are also essential in a home cinema. Therefore, keep the other walls and fabrics in the room dark and do not use reflective materials. Rooms in the basement are particularly suitable.

The Beamer

When choosing a projector, you should definitely make sure that it has at least a Full HD resolution with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This is the only way to get Blu-ray discs to their full advantage. If you want to be particularly well equipped, you should also find out about 4k projectors. These models have a much sharper image resolution of at least 3840 x 2160 pixels, so that details can be seen even better. At the moment, however, the acquisition costs are still very high and not suitable for everyone. Cost: around 7000 euros.

Good to know: At the moment there are not many games in 4k resolution, but it is assumed that the 4k resolution will replace full HD in the future.

The second criterion is the luminosity of the projector. If you set up a home cinema in a room that cannot be completely darkened, the projector should have a significantly higher luminosity (from 2, 000 ANSI lumens).

When purchasing a projector, also find out about the maximum number of colors shown and the supported contrast range. Premium devices with an extended color space or HDR (High Dynamic Range) are very suitable for this.

Good to know: The distance between the projector and the projection surface depends on the model of the projector and the size of the projection surface. You can easily calculate this distance online.

There are a few things to consider when buying a projector. Be sure to choose a model with a minimum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The sound system

Manufacturers usually offer ready-made sound systems for their own home cinema. These can be installed quickly and already contain all components. When choosing the sound system, you have to differentiate between terms such as 5.1 and 7.1, because they indicate how many speakers are included in the scope of delivery. With a 5.1 sound system, five speakers (plus subwoofer) are included, with 7.1 seven speakers.

5.1 sound system

The 5.1 sound system consists of two front speakers, two back speakers, a speaker in the center and a subwoofer for bass tones.

7.1 sound system

In a 7.1 sound system, two additional speakers are integrated, which are placed on the left and right of the viewer. The sounds are then played out from the same sides as in the cinema.
