Video: Instructions: Design door signs individually

Door signs attract attention. If they were then creatively designed themselves or have a humorous lettering, the craft project was a success. Read here how you can design your own door sign step by step and what you need for it.
Door signs come in all shapes and colors. While the signs were originally intended to provide information about what is behind the front door, today they are hung in various places. Whether on the wall, at the window or above the stove in the kitchen - the square or round boards can be found everywhere. Funny and cheeky sayings in particular then catch the eye and make guests and residents smile. How you can make your very own wooden sign, read below.
Required material
- computer
- Printer paper
- Photo box
- duct tape
- cutter
- Cutting mat
- PVC rigid film
- pencil
- Wooden board (plywood or solid wood, one to two centimeters thick)
- Jigsaw
- Sandpaper (100 grit)
- Acrylic paint
- small round brush or sponge
- Protective varnish
Design design
Before you can start with the manual work, you should first consider which shape your door plate should have, which size is suitable, which color is required and very importantly: What is written on it - a word or rather a whole sentence? Let your creativity run free and, if necessary, seek inspiration on the Internet or in magazines. As soon as you have an exact idea of your door sign, you can start.
Make the template
Design the text of your choice in different fonts and sizes on your computer. Then the favorite sketch is printed out and attached to photo cardboard with adhesive tape. Then you can cut out the letters with a cutter - put a cutting mat underneath. For a durable stencil, it's best to use PVC hard film (you can find it in craft supplies). If letters such as "b" or "o" are not to be fully painted, leave small bars at the top and bottom that hold the inner surfaces in place.

Let your creativity run wild and create a template at the beginning. That makes work easier later.

Saw out
The finished template is now placed on the wooden board. Then you can trace the template and the outline with a pencil. The outer shape is then cut out with the jigsaw. You should sand the edges smooth.

After you have made the template, you can saw out the corresponding piece of wood with a jigsaw.

Paint wood
Now prime the sign in the desired color with diluted acrylic paint or with wood glaze. The wood structure comes into its own when you regrind the dried sign again. Please make sure that you always paint and sand in the direction of the grain.

Both acrylic paint and wood glaze are suitable for priming the sign.

Decorate the shield
Fix the crafted stencil with adhesive tape on the sign. Dab a little color on the stencil with a small round brush or sponge. If the lettering and decoration are dry, seal the sign with a transparent protective varnish so that it stays beautiful for longer.

Finally, the sign is decorated and the lettering is painted on using a stencil.
