Self-made stepping stones made of concrete are not only an inexpensive alternative to conventional slabs, but can also be decorated individually. The stones look particularly beautiful decorated with mosaic stones or broken glass. Our step-by-step guide explains how it's done.
You need that
- sand
- Trass cement
- Flower pot coasters in the desired size
- Mosaic stones, broken tiles
- neutral vegetable oil (or silicone spray)
Step 1: form circles
Mix as much concrete in a bucket as you can process in an hour. A drill with a mixing attachment is suitable for mixing. Two thirds of sand and one third of trass cement is recommended for the mixture. Then add enough water to create a quark-like consistency. Then you should oil your flower tote coaster with vegetable oil to make it easier to remove it later. Once all the preparations have been made, the concrete can now be filled in at least five centimeters thick.

Mix the concrete and fill it at least five centimeters thick.

Step 2: lay the pattern
While the concrete is still damp, you should press the decorative material into the concrete. Be sure to countersink the mosaic stones deep enough to avoid the pattern breaking out of the stepping stone.

As long as the concrete is still moist, you can decorate the surface as you wish.

Step 3: clean plates
Once the concrete has set, the mosaic can be cleaned with a sponge. The stepping stone should remain in the mold for about 24 hours to guarantee the required stability.

Has the concrete dried completely? Then you can carefully clean the surface with a sponge.

Step 4: lay stepping stones
When the concrete is completely dry, the slabs can be removed from the coasters and laid out in the lawn to match the stride length. To do this, dig out holes about ten centimeters deep in the respective size, fill in five centimeters of sand and tap on them. Insert the kicks and press them until they are flush with the turf. Ideally, you should wait about two weeks before using the new route.

As soon as the concrete has dried completely, you can carefully remove the step from the mold.

Extra tip
Decorating the concrete slabs is reminiscent of topping fruit cakes. You can even apply a glaze. Simply rub the plates with a little salad oil and they shine in a wet look.
