Do you fancy a riot of color? Bring autumn to your door. We will tell you which plants you need so that the Indian Summer succeeds in your own garden.

Here a swab of barberry yellow, there a little rock pear orange with a hint of cork spindle violet and maybe another shade of snowball red: This is how autumn paints the garden - you can paint with it.

That is why deciduous trees are colorful

As soon as the days get shorter and colder, the plants begin to break down the ingredients of their leaves into individual components. The leaf green (chlorophyll) and the energy-rich starch are stored in wood, trunks and roots. The red and yellow dyes visible to our eyes remain in the leaves.

The right location for autumn deciduous trees

Sunny locations make the colors shine more than semi-shaded ones. They fade in shady places. Fireworks are weaker on lime-rich soils than on acid ones.

Indian summer mood with the right plants

Especially in small gardens, less is often more. Make a shortlist between fire-red vinegar tree and Japanese maple. Anyone who loves yellow relies on love pearl bushes, witch hazel or false hazel. Amber trees, ginkgo and red maple are unbeatable as specimen trees for large gardens.

Design the Indian summer garden correctly

Yellow and orange autumn leaves come into their own against the dark background of a grass carpet, dense coniferous hedges or evergreen trees. Bright red, on the other hand, calls for a bright set. Delicate green or bluish tree tops and light house walls provide backing. Hedges experience their second spring in autumn, when the green rows are accentuated by dabs of colorful wild roses and cornelian cherries, by Pfaffenhütchen or hawthorn bushes.

Perennials complement the play of colors

Not only the wooded garden is now enchanted. In the perennial border, foam bloom and cranesbill provide colorful floor fur. Grasses such as Chinese reed and pampas grass accompany the spectacle with silver spikes of wheat. Climbing hydrangea, tree shrubs and wisteria bathe privacy screens, pergolas and house facades all in yellow. And the wild wine leaves its fiery red business card.

Compost autumn leaves properly

The leaves can remain in the beds as protection against the cold, on the lawn they are chopped and composted when mowing. Note the different rotting times:

  • Oak, chestnut, plane, walnut and poplar leaves take a long time
  • Maple, beech, elm, linden, willow, birch and hazelnut rot more quickly

Layer the leaf species in a heap with the same rotting time. Three to five kilos of horn meal per square meter and repeated shifts accelerate the decomposition process.
