If you create a gravel garden, you can save future maintenance efforts. You can find some ideas for plant selection and other know-how on how to design a gravel garden here. One thing becomes clear: a gravel garden does not mean to lovelessly fill the garden with stones. A load of pebbles rather offers unusual design options, reduces the ongoing work for hobby gardeners and leaves more time to enjoy.

Create a gravel garden

Regardless of whether you create a gravel garden with or without plants - it offers visual tranquility in both cases. If there is no planting, it looks like a white lawn, but does a lot less work. Another plus: gravel suits every style, the Asian or country house garden as well as the urban modern. Gravel can be used quickly and cheaply. If it comes from regional origins, the color and structure will surely match the garden.

The stones should not always be round like the roof pebbles. Grit of five to eight millimeters and larger are better, especially for frequently used paths: their broken edges stabilize the surface, while round gravel rolls when you walk on and is more suitable for a barefoot massage route in the wellness garden. However, the wonderful crunch is common to all variants and is reminiscent of a long afternoon in the beer garden or the last visit to the park.

Regardless of whether you choose an area with or without perennials, you should consider two pieces of advice when creating:

  • Install a weed fleece - rock and soil cannot mix in this way, root weeds have no chance.
  • Build clear boundaries - the gravel will not mix with other garden areas, such as the lawn.

A weed fleece as a separating layer

A water-permeable, UV-stable weed fleece made of plastic prevents weeds from spreading in your gravel garden. After you have removed about five centimeters of topsoil, leveled and weeded the future gravel bed, cover it with the fleece. When laying out, make sure that the edges overlap by about ten centimeters and pin it with nails or metal pins.

There are two ways to use plants. Either you start before gravel spreading or after gravel spreading. The disadvantage of inserting it afterwards is that you have to push the gravel aside. The disadvantage of inserting before is the more careful distribution of the stones. In both cases, you have to cut the weed fleece crosswise at the planting points with a knife.

Define the gravel garden

A demarcation of gravel bed and other beds or areas is necessary, because otherwise the stones would mix in everywhere. These could be a problem, especially when mowing the lawn. Paving stones or metal rails set in concrete are suitable for demarcation. In contrast to the rails, the stones are of course more eye-catching. You should not step on the metal rails because they can easily bend. So it's entirely up to you. If your gravel bed arises in a place with a slope, make sure that the boundary is higher than the gravel filling. On really steep slopes, several horizontal levels are recommended, for example smaller walls.

Design the gravel garden

The design of the beds should take into account the heights and textures of the plants. Spacious grass bristles go with small upholstery, filigree with large-leaved. Let your perennial gardener advise you on the space required. This saves money because you don't accidentally plant too many perennials in the smallest of spaces. This means that pebble islands that are still open can be recognized even after years, ensuring optical calm and a suitable microclimate. Beautiful companions such as feather grass or millet bring additional elegance. Bulbs such as crocuses and wild tulips provide the first color in spring.

Maintain the gravel garden

The nice thing about the gravel garden with perennials is the low maintenance: After waxing, the survivors don't even need water or fertilizer in order to bloom for a whole season.

Only the autumn leaves and other plant remains should be removed. Otherwise it could decompose and form fine humus in the cracks. The humus in turn would serve as an ideal breeding ground for weeds. The best way to avoid mossing is to leave the gravel bed in a sunny location.
