Video: Shade Solutions - I NEED RELIEF 2023, February

Without conservatory shading or sun protection, whether from outside or inside, it can get unbearably hot in the glass case in summer. The sun shines over the glass surfaces and warms the conservatory ever further. Even sun protection glass, which absorbs parts of the sunlight thanks to its special coating, is of little help. You can find out which conservatory shades are available in addition to natural sun protection and what other options for improving the air you have here.

Natural sun protection

Deciduous trees and tendrils are particularly suitable for shading outside conservatories. The leaves keep the sun's rays out in the warm season and keep the greenhouse cool. In winter, however, the sun penetrates the bare branches and pleasantly warms up the glass room. Architecturally, natural sun protection is one of the most beautiful solutions. The disadvantage is that the trees and tendrils are first planted and sometimes have to grow over several decades before they can serve as sun protection.

If there is no natural sun protection, there is the possibility of artificial conservatory shading. They shade the conservatory with sun protection from the outside or from the inside.

Conservatory shading from outside or inside?

Whether the conservatory shading is installed from the outside or from the inside is basically a personal decision. External sun protection is more effective since the sun's rays are already intercepted outside the conservatory - but it cannot be attached to every conservatory. In very windy regions, for example, the external attachment may not make much sense. Sun protection from the inside, on the other hand, is usually cheaper and more beautiful and can be installed in any conservatory. How you use the winter garden also plays an important role. If you use it as an office, you will prefer different lighting conditions than in the greenhouse. The perfect solution depends above all on the function of the sun protection:

  • Heat protection
  • Anti-glare
  • Privacy screen
  • darkening

Conservatory shading from the outside

A conservatory shading from the outside reflects up to four fifths of the incident light. Since the sun protection is installed from the outside and is exposed to the weather, it has to be robust. Electrically controllable conservatory shading or shading with automatic weather control are practical - they move in and out automatically depending on the weather. Awnings, awnings and roller shutters are popular as external sun protection.

Awnings, the classic when it comes to sun protection from the outside, are just as suitable for horizontal and sloping roof surfaces as for the wall. Mounted on the conservatory construction, the awnings protect the roof from sunlight. New is the variant that can be pulled out beyond the roof end and thus also casts shadows on the glass front.

Shade sail

The fan-shaped awnings are fixed and pivotable at only one point, so they move with the course of the sun. Other models are fixed at four points and can be adjusted using a cable. This flexibility makes sun sails good for darkening glass surfaces that are difficult to shade.

Sun sails can be swiveled and are therefore ideally suited as sun protection.

Outside shutters

In the past, roller shutters were mainly used in the vertical. Today there are more and more systems that can also be used for sloping glass surfaces. These consist of robust plastic, aluminum or steel and lie windproof on the glass roof. In contrast to the textile awning, they are up to any weather.

Conservatory shading from the inside

The conservatory shading from the inside reflects a maximum of three fifths of the incoming light - less than the sun protection from the outside. In addition, the shading swallows only light and no heat from the inside. But sun protection is cheaper and usually more beautiful. There are a variety of ways to protect against the sun's rays inside the house. Blinds, roller blinds and curtains are just a few of them. It is important that the material withstands the flood of the sun.

Venetian blind as a shade

The blind is - like the awning for the outside - the classic solution for sun protection from the inside. There are various variants, such as horizontal and vertical blinds, right up to cozy wooden blinds.

Pleated blind and roller blind

Both types can adapt to almost any window shape and are therefore very useful as internal sun protection. Your difference: The roller blind is made of smooth fabric and is rolled up on a roll. The fabric of the pleated blind is pre-folded (pleated) and pushed together like an accordion to form a package.

Blinds can adapt as well as any window shape. Therefore, they are ideal as sun protection from the inside.

Panel curtain

Panel curtains are particularly suitable for large window areas. The freely movable sliding panels are available in various decorative shapes and colors, and their arrangement and number can be individually determined.

Ventilate regularly despite sun protection

Despite shading the conservatory, you should rely on fresh air in summer. It is particularly easy if you install ventilation flaps in the winter garden. In the roof they are called ventilation flaps, in the walls they are called ventilation flaps. As soon as the outside temperature is five degrees Celsius colder than that inside the winter garden, the warmest layers of air collect under the roof - chimney effect. Thanks to the ventilation flaps, the warm air can escape directly to the outside. At the same time, cooler air flows in through the ventilation flaps in the side walls. So fresh air is always provided.

Another option to provide fresh air is offered by folding sliding doors. They extend across the entire front of the winter garden and can be fully opened if necessary. A complete air exchange takes place within a few minutes. These sliding doors are particularly practical when the winter garden connects directly to a terrace.
