Whether floor lift, lift or platform lift: The financing of a stair lift is often a big project - because the requirement for mobility aid in everyday life is often due to a sudden mobility restriction due to an accident or need for care. In addition: The costs for newly produced and individually installed stairlifts are high. It is advisable to take a look at all options and possible alternatives in advance - and to get comprehensive information about available funding options and grants for the stair lift costs.

How to calculate the cost of your stairlift

A number of factors determine the cost of purchasing and installing your stairlift. This includes the model type, the duration of the assignment, but also the desired or required type of transport. An initial telephone conversation with an expert makes sense. So you can have the price range of the expected stairlift estimated by a specialist in advance. You should also contact your health and long-term care insurance to clarify the options for assuming the costs.

You can easily determine the cost of your stairlift with this online calculator:

First of all, the amount of the stairlift costs largely depends on whether your stairlift should be installed inside or outside and which structural conditions have to be taken into account on site. For example, it makes a huge difference whether your staircase is straight, around the corner or even as a curved or round spiral staircase. Basically, the cheapest are the costs for stair lifts with a straight staircase.

Other price factors: load capacity, models & functions

Numerous other factors determine the cost of your stairlift: above all, the person-specific requirements for the stairlift, such as its load capacity: the heavier the person to be transported, the more stable the lift and the corresponding wall device and the underlying structure must be. Wall reinforcement may sometimes be necessary.

Express production, additional functions and extras such as equipment with various technical operating aids, special features for safety, as well as design and materials can quickly drive up the costs for the stairlift. And finally, the model chosen also decides the cost of the stairlift: there is the classic seat lift for people with reduced mobility and those for whom climbing stairs has become too difficult. A platform lift or a standing lift, on the other hand, is the right choice if you also need to transport a walker or light wheelchair in addition to the person. The highest is the cost of the so-called lift, which can carry particularly heavy loads.

Classic: the seat lift - and what it costs

The seat lift is by far the most common model of choice when it comes to installing a stair lift indoors. This is not only due to the relatively low cost of this stairlift. The seat lift is also suitable for short-term transitional solutions, for example in care cases, in old age and in the event of sudden mobility restrictions.

Seat lifts can be installed on both straight and curved stairs. The price range for straight models is between 4, 000 and 10, 000 euros, for curved seat lifts between 8, 000 and 15, 000 euros. Seat lifts are also available for outdoor installation. There they are usually a little more expensive than indoors.

An overview of the platform lift

Platform lifts are suitable for standing transportation of a person with restricted mobility, but also for the additional transport of a light walker or wheelchair - provided the platform is large enough for this and the load capacity is not exceeded. Standing lifts with platform can be installed both inside and outside.

The costs for a straight platform lift are roughly in the price range between 9, 000 to 15, 000 euros - regardless of whether you want to install it on the outside of the house or inside in the stairwell. A curvy stairlift, on the other hand, costs more: the interior models cost from 12, 000 euros and the exterior models from 15, 000 euros. Elaborate models and unusual structural requirements can quickly drive the cost of such a stairlift up to 25, 000 euros.

One big thing: indoor and outdoor lift

There are many different lifts for overcoming stairs for people with reduced mobility with wheelchairs or rollators, both indoors and outdoors: The size of the platform depends on whether a wheelchair should be transported with an additional caregiver, for example.

Lift lifts up to a height of around 1.80 meters easily cost from almost 6, 000 euros upwards, the price range extends up to 15, 000 euros depending on the equipment and functions. Lift lifts that have to overcome an even greater difference in height are even more expensive: the costs for such a stairlift start at 17, 000 euros.

Alternative to buying a new one: rent a stairlift

If you are afraid of the high purchase costs for the stairlift, you can alternatively rent a stairlift. The easier and shorter the flight of stairs, the cheaper it is. The rent makes sense especially if you only need the stairlift for a short time. If the useful life is unclear, you should offset the rental costs against the acquisition costs to determine which variant is likely to be cheaper. If in doubt, ask in advance whether the stairlift company will buy the stairlift again after the end of use. Experience has shown that the surrender value for a used stairlift is low compared to the cost of the purchase.

For bargain hunters: second-hand stairlifts

Of course, you can also buy a used stair lift and thus save high costs for the new purchase. As a rule, you receive the seat device from a second hand and only have to rebuild the lane system and have it installed individually. Sometimes it is also possible to install a used and refurbished rail system. Inquire directly with the manufacturers of stairlifts for used models. The average saving is around 50 percent. Of course, you have to make sure of the quality and safety of the used lift before buying it. Keep in mind that when you buy a used stair lift privately - unlike the used model from the dealer - you have no guarantee and liability for possible later defects.

Possible grants for the stair lift costs

Different service providers, especially the long-term care insurance, grant a subsidy for the costs that you incur by installing a stairlift: the prerequisite for this is usually the need for care or mobility restrictions, which is determined by an official level of care. The stairlift must either enable or facilitate home care or make it easier for the person concerned to live independently. Always apply for grants for the stair lift costs before the start of the renovation.

Financing for the stairlift: the maintenance allowance

To purchase the stair lift using the so-called care cost subsidy, you must submit an application directly to the health insurance company. If this is approved, you will receive a subsidy of up to 4, 000 euros from your long-term care insurance. The prerequisite for approval is a level of care: the higher this is, the more likely and higher the subsidy will be. Several people in a household who are officially in need of care increase the possible subsidy, for a couple, for example, to 8, 000 euros and up to a maximum of 16, 000 euros, for example in a senior flat share with four people.

When applying for a so-called "living environment improvement measure", you should keep in mind that the funding amount applies to all changes in the course of this measure: In addition to installing the stairlift, you can also perform a bathroom renovation, door extensions or other conversions for barrier-free living this affects the grant for the stairlift costs. However, you can apply for a “measure to improve the living environment” several times at different times if your relatives' ability to lead their own lives gradually deteriorates.

Other subsidies, loans & Co

In addition, many regional providers, such as the Landesbanken, provide funding opportunities and low-interest loans for the conversion to barrier-free or age-appropriate living. The Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) grants an investment subsidy for the stair lift costs of up to 5, 000 euros per household as well as cheap credit facilities within the scope of existing funds from the “Age-appropriate renovation” initiative. This is independent of the level of care and is therefore also suitable for people who want to convert in a way that is appropriate for their age.

In addition, accident or liability insurance and professional associations also sometimes bear the costs of installing the stairlift in those cases where mobility aid is required due to an accident or accident at work, through third party negligence or due to an occupational illness. If you do not receive any subsidy for the stair lift costs in this way, you can contact the employment agency or social welfare agency due to need.

For starters: You have to know that when it comes to stair lift costs

Providers of stairlifts usually offer you a free initial consultation and also measure your staircase on site: stair length, number of steps and step height are recorded as well as the nature of your walls and the course of the stairs. Only on the basis of such an individual design can a price offer be created and confirmed by you. You should not incur any costs for the first measurement of your stairs.

Identify hidden follow-up and additional costs

Before installation, check with the manufacturer whether annual maintenance is included in the price: this can otherwise lead to additional costs. If in doubt, conclude an additional maintenance contract to ensure that you receive immediate support in the event of short-term failures and repair needs. Check the duration of the guarantee for your stairlift before you confirm your order. You should also clarify the costs for later disassembly with the manufacturer in advance, otherwise the dismantling can be expensive again.

Quality criteria when choosing a manufacturer

Have you decided to buy a new stairlift? Get started by getting an overview of the manufacturer's landscape from Stiftung Warentest or other relevant stair lift tests on the Internet. Those who offer free stair surveying and quotations, who value extensive advice and service and who are transparent with regard to maintenance services are serious. TÜV testing and certification are also indicators of a good stairlift company.
