Furniture made from Euro pallets conquer the living world. However, it cannot only be used for handicrafts, it is primarily a sophisticated logistics product, the size, dimensions and weight of which are standardized. Here are 12 facts about the current favorite material of all DIY fans - the Euro pallet.

A coffee table for the living room, a plant wall for the garden wall or a sofa for the whole family - the possibilities to create objects and furniture from Euro pallets seem almost endless. "Great furniture for inside and outside can be built from wooden pallets, " says Claudia Guther, author of "Alles Paletti !: DIY furniture made from pallets and wine boxes" (Frech Verlag). "The material is cheap, very robust and flexible at the same time."

But: First and foremost, goods are transported with Euro pallets. The Europool range (the real name) is a sophisticated global system that revolutionized the logistics industry over 50 years ago. Guther knows that misuse in the DIY sector lasts almost as long: "My mother built a bed out of pallets in the 1970s."

Euro pallet - size, dimensions and weight

The Euro pallet must meet certain dimensions to guarantee optimal use of space. 78 special nails are processed on an exact footprint of 0.96 square meters (length 1200 mm, width 800 mm, height 144 mm). Exactly two Euro pallets crosswise or three Euro pallets lengthways fit on swap bodies, swap body containers or semi-trailers (loading width 2.40 meters each). This guarantees that there are no expensive cavities during transport. In total, a pallet can carry a load of up to 2000 kg. The dead weight of a standard pallet is around 22 kg, an industrial pallet weighs around 35 kg.

Euro pallet stamp

Euro pallets are used by transport companies all over the world and enable fast goods transport. There has even been a euro pallet exchange system since the 1970s, which has established strict quality controls and thus guarantees the safety of freight traffic.

Domestic Euro pallets are mostly made from pine wood. In total, only 17 high-quality types of wood can be processed into one pallet. The types of wood to be used are binding in the European Pallet Association eV (EPAL). However, since inadmissible woods are used time and again to build pallets, it is advisable to pay attention to two important characteristics when building furniture from pallets.

This includes the EPAL stamp, which is located on the left and right block and confirms that the pallet meets the relevant standards. Before August 1, 2013, the right corner block was labeled with the European Pallet Pool instead of the EPAL symbol: EUR.

Another important hallmark is the IPPC stamp, which is located on the center block. Euro pallets with an IPPC stamp are made of stable, untreated wood without pests. The IPPC stamp contains the country code and the registration number.

It is particularly important to ensure that the stamp does not contain the “MB” marking, which stands for the toxin methyl bromite, which has not been used in the manufacture of Euro pallets since 2010.

Furthermore, there are the safe marks "HT" (heat treatment) and "DB" (debarking) on the stamp.

The types of Euro pallet

When exchanging euro pallets, a distinction is made between the following types of quality:

  • New Euro pallet: This is delivered directly from the manufacturer to the customer and is mainly used in the food industry as well as in pharmaceuticals and other goods sensitive to pollution.
  • As good as new Euro pallet: As good as new means that the Euro pallet was exchanged at most twice. It is used by industrial companies that have standardized their packaging machines on Euro pallets. Here, for example, no wood splinters may protrude from the Euro pallet or be missing.
  • Used / exchangeable Euro pallet: Although a used, exchangeable Euro pallet has some defects, such as a slightly darker wood color or small chips, it is still used by most companies and freight forwarders.
  • Used / no longer exchangeable euro pallets: All euro pallets that have rotten or broken are no longer exchangeable.
  • Repaired Euro pallets: Euro pallets that are no longer exchangeable are repaired by companies licensed by EPAL. Such Europlatten again fall into the used / exchangeable category. Repaired Euro pallets can be recognized by a round nail seal in the center block, which is only awarded by EPAL.

Good to know: The repair of a Euro pallet is only reserved for certain companies. Worldwide there are only about 1000 license numbers.

This is how the exchange works

Exchange of Euro pallets is not automatic. The following conditions are mandatory for an exchange agreement:

  • It is a Euro pallet according to the quality criteria (see above)
  • When placing the order, the shipper points out Euro pallets
  • The number of Euro pallets is noted on the freight documents
  • The carrier commissioned by the freight forwarder confirms the number of Euro pallets accepted by the customer on the freight documents / delivery note.

Good to know: A pallet exchange is not common in all countries; even within the EU, it has not prevailed in all member countries. In addition, the pallet exchange is an individual agreement between the sender and recipient. Instead of exchanging the pallets, you can also resell them.
