Wooden houses are characterized by a comfortable living environment and high thermal insulation. But these are far from all the advantages of building with the natural material. Read here why a wooden house can be the right choice for you.

Wooden houses are very popular, mainly because of the advantages they have to offer. Although building with wood has been going on for centuries, especially in times of increasing ecological awareness, wooden houses are convincing with their energy efficiency and resource conservation. What else speaks for building with wood, read below.

More energy savings

Wood is a traditional building material with modern properties, the buildings easily meet the requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance EnEV. Almost 80 percent of all passive or 1.5-liter houses are built using timber construction.

More living space through timber frame construction

Wood with the same cross-sections is used for timber frame construction. The stand, frame and threshold - preferably made of solid KVH construction timber - are joined to support frames. Ceiling, roof and wall panels made of gypsum or wooden materials with building authority approval stiffen the framework and prevent the uprights from buckling or tipping to the side. Insulation in the wall cavities reduces heat loss, it sits between the wood - the supporting structure and insulation form one level. A wooden frame wall thus takes on both static and building physics functions. Advantage: You can get by with thin walls, this reduces the built-up area, you gain space to live. On the inside, a vapor barrier protects the components from condensing room air, on the outside, the wind brake and facade shell keep the construction windproof and dry.

More economy

Wooden frame structures allow any floor plan, construction grid and planking dimensions are independent of each other - however, it is more economical to adopt the standard dimensions of the wood-based panels for the grid dimension of the vertical ribs. The usual grid dimension is 62.5 centimeters, the DIN 1052 standard limits the rib spacing depending on the thickness of the cladding. The spacing between the columns must not exceed 50 times the thickness of the planking, otherwise they may change their shape. Depending on the cross-section of the construction timber, additional insulation layers achieve the level of thermal protection of a 3-liter house, 1.5-liter house or passive house. A large number of tested structures for walls, ceilings and roofs meet the requirements for noise and fire protection.

Wooden houses can be built in three different ways: log house, skeleton construction and timber frame construction. If you want to do the interior work yourself, it is easier to play with a wooden house than with an already plastered stone building.

Save time with prefabricated parts

The components for a wooden frame construction are usually prefabricated in the assembly hall of the carpenter or timber construction company - regardless of the weather. The prefabricated walls, ceilings and roof structure are quickly installed, which saves construction time and financing costs.

Timber panel construction is even faster

Timber panel construction is the timber construction method of prefabricated house manufacturers; it is closely related to frame construction. There are differences in the degree of prefabrication - prefabricated house walls, ceilings and roof elements come ready-made from the factory, where fitters already build the insulation into the compartments of the frame construction, regardless of the season and weather, lay empty pipes for the building services and close the elements with vapor barrier and wind barrier, planking or cladding on both sides, with an insulated facade made of wood or plaster on the outside - any clinker shell must be bricked on site. Windows and external doors are also part of the factory pre-assembled components. Wooden panel constructions can be anchored to the foundation or basement upper edge within a few days, the interior work can be started quickly.

More warmth

The Energy Saving Ordinance EnEV requires airtightness, windproofness and insulation for new buildings, which is why the skeleton is encased with a heat-insulating and windproof layer, the walls and windows on the inside of the house are sealed airtight and the facade is placed separately in front of the supporting structure. Constructive wood protection such as roof overhang, distance from the floor and water drainage protect cantilevered wooden components such as balconies, porches and walkways. Depending on the architecture of the house, chemical wood protection may also be necessary for external components. Columns and girders, walls and facade components are cut to size and prefabricated connections to the construction site, the supporting structure can be quickly anchored to the foundation or basement, locked and divided into rooms.

More health

Professional planning and construction and careful execution by qualified carpentry or timber construction companies secure the value of a timber house. If you observe the rules of constructive wood protection, chemical wood protection can be largely or completely avoided. Surface treatment protects wood outdoors.

Block building

Log construction is the oldest form of timber construction, and due to constant further development of the construction technology and refinement of the architecture, it has lost none of its topicality. The planks are cut rectangular or round. They are placed on top of one another and faded at the corners. Due to the wood mass, sealing of the spaces between the wood and perfect corner joints, modern log houses meet the current requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance EnEV.

Solid wood construction: more freedom

Elements for solid wood construction - the primary form is the construction of logs - consist of boards, planks or squared timber, they are nailed, screwed, bolted or glued into panes. In contrast to timber frame construction, load-bearing and insulating layers are usually separated from each other. Newly developed solid construction elements and double-shell block plank walls with an insulated cavity combine both functions. A thermal insulation layer increases the good thermal insulation of wood, it is arranged outside or inside instead of in the supporting plane; Builders choose between open and diffusion-proof constructions. As weather protection, laminated veneer plywood panels are impregnated onto the wooden elements as a facade, alternatively a facing facade that can also be plastered.


One does not have to look at a prefabricated house made of wood that it was built of wood. Nevertheless, the natural wood look on the outer facade is very popular.

Advantages and disadvantages of the different wood construction methods

With all solid construction systems, individual floor plans and facades can be designed, with some significantly larger spans than with a wooden frame construction. Solid wood structures are composed of prefabricated components or modules of different formats, the wall elements bear the vertical load over a large area, and the elements usually stiffen the construction at the same time. Cross-glued solid building elements are considered to be particularly dimensionally stable and less prone to shrinkage. Wooden solid structures make optimal use of the strength properties of wood - load-bearing walls can be narrowly planned, living space gained. Planners and carpenters advise on questions of sound insulation, for ceilings, for example, a weighting is recommended, the transmission of structure-borne noise can be avoided by carefully insulating the sound bridges.

Deformations are planned

Most solid construction systems are prefabricated in the factory and joined and connected on site - the shell is soon finished. The wood can dry up in the first two years after installation, the planner and the manufacturer take into account shrinkage of the wood in order to avoid structural damage. Sliding strips and concealed movement joints above doors, windows and lintels enable the wall elements or block beams to be set. In contrast to their historical ancestors, modern block buildings are joint-tight. For example, pre-compressed sealing tapes are placed between the grooves and tongues of the planks and the joints are stretched vertically together with steel cables - so they do not open when the wood "works".
