The following applies to all carpet materials: regular care maintains beauty and value - and ensures a healthy indoor climate because mites and germs are eliminated. How to clean your carpet professionally.

The basic carpet cleaning

Use a vacuum cleaner to clean every carpet that is frequently walked on at least once a week. Otherwise dust and dirt will enter the fibers and it will be difficult to remove the contaminants. Put the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner for cleaning. Exception: looped goods and long-pile carpets - the smooth nozzle is more suitable here. The simultaneous brushing and vacuuming removes loose dirt from the depth of the fibers and strips off adhering dirt particles. Initial fluff on new carpets is harmless. These are fiber residues that are left behind when the pile is cut smooth. The carpet fibers straighten up again after vacuuming and form an even surface - the carpet looks fresh and new.

Intensive cleaning for the carpet

Carpets that are particularly stressed, for example in the hallway, kitchen or children's room, need extensive, intensive cleaning at intervals of one to two years. Depending on the carpet material and degree of soiling, we recommend:

  • Wet cleaning with carpet foam and vacuum cleaner: Put the spray foam directly on the carpet, brush the mass into the pile. Let the foam dry, do not walk on the area during this time - put on a towel if necessary. Then vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Please note: If the carpet gets wet, it can rub off on the surface - put old cloths or blankets under the carpet before intensive cleaning and before any stain treatment.
  • Wet cleaning with a shampooer or with a spray extraction device. Machine cleaning is not suitable for carpets made of coconut, sisal and goat hair, nor for carpets with a rib structure and coarse woven carpets - the cleaning liquid is difficult to remove from the structural gaps in the fabric and quickly attracts new dirt. The carpet becomes very damp and must dry quickly - it must not be walked on during the drying time. Leave the wet cleaning to a specialist company. The experts will refresh your carpets at your home or collect them for cleaning.
  • Cleaning with a steam cleaning device: steam loosens dirt, stains and grease thanks to its natural cleaning power. The loosened dirt is collected directly in a special cloth. In contrast to cleaning with cleaning agents, no residues remain in the carpet.

The basic rule is: never wet carpets when cleaning, otherwise waves and water marks can form. Should the mishap nevertheless happen: Place vessels with a special granulate that attracts and absorbs moisture. Dehumidifier granules are available in the camping department and in hardware stores.

How to treat stains in the carpet

Always remove stains immediately, otherwise they will dry out. Do five steps:

  1. Soak up liquids with paper (kitchen roll, speed handkerchief) or clean cloth, lift off sticky or thickened items with a knife. Vacuum dry, loose dirt with the vacuum cleaner. Never rub stains, just dab. Otherwise the carpet fibers become matted or twisted. Always treat contaminated areas from the outside edge to the inside.
  2. Many stains can be removed with lukewarm water. Do not add detergents or washing-up liquid to the warm water - it promotes re-pollution. Repeatedly dab in from the edge and soak up the liquid again and again - avoid rubbing.
  3. If the stain resists removal with warm water, tackle it with a carpet cleaner. Follow the instructions for use on the package. Dab the stained substance of the stain carefully with kitchen paper more often. Important: spread and enlarge the stain by rubbing. If dark rings or water rings remain after the stain treatment, the carpet is dirty overall and should be cleaned intensively.
  4. The stain may not come out the first time. Repeat the treatment until you see nothing. Finally rinse with water, dab it carefully with a cloth or paper towel. Let the carpet dry, then go over the stain again with the vacuum cleaner. Before each attempt at cleaning, chew gum stains with ice cubes and smash them with a hammer. Remove the broken particles immediately with a vacuum cleaner. Then treat the stain with carpet cleaner.
  5. Stubborn stains and dirt residues disappear completely with solvent-based stain removers. Caution: These agents damage wool carpets. Do not pour the stain remover directly onto the carpet, but soak a cloth - otherwise the back coating of the carpet will dissolve.

Tip: You can also remove stains with a steam cleaner. Thanks to its natural cleaning power, steam dissolves dirt, stains and grease. The loosened dirt is collected directly in an absorbent special cloth. In contrast to cleaning with cleaning agents, no residues remain in the carpet.

Clean wool carpets

Never treat carpets made from animal fibers such as wool, goat hair and silk with lye - they lose their elasticity and strength and become brittle. The hair structure is damaged, colors can leak or fade. Acidic cleaning agents maintain the health, shine and elasticity of wool and animal hair. If you buy a carpet cleaning product, read the table of contents: If it contains alkaline components or if there is no information, you should opt for a clearly pH-acidic product. After each treatment, stain removal or intensive cleaning, brush the pile of wool carpets in the direction of the line and ensure that it dries quickly - close the windows and turn on the heating. If the room temperature is higher than the outside temperature, ventilate the heated, humid room air. Repeat until the carpet is completely dry.

Clean carpet made of natural fibers (jute, sisal, cotton)

Undyed plant fibers such as jute, sisal, cotton and coconut tolerate alkaline cleaning agents. Dirt and stains can be removed with curd soap or gall soap. But be careful with dyed vegetable fibers: They can fade if you clean the carpet with soapy water, stain remover, soda or ammonia spirit. Use a carpet cleaner with an acidic pH.

Clean carpet made of synthetic fibers

Synthetic fibers such as propylene / polyamide / polyacrylic ("Dralon", "Nylon") are less sensitive than natural fibers. You can remove dirt and stains with alkaline cleaning agents such as core, lubricating or gall soap. After cleaning, velor should be brushed lightly in the direction of the brush when it is still damp.

Under no circumstances should you do this:

  • Solvent-based cleaners such as petrol, acetone (nail polish remover) and stain removal water remove grease stains from flat fabrics, but are not suitable for thick textiles such as carpets. The agents loosen the stain, but do not remove it from the fiber - the dirt sinks back into the depth of the fiber. The carpet becomes gray and unsightly.
  • Wool detergents and dishwashing detergents are "mild", but must be rinsed out well after use - hardly possible with carpets. The smallest detergent residues magnetically attract new dirt, let the carpet fade and turn gray.

What else you can treat your carpet to

Assuming you live in a region with clean air and clean precipitation: once in winter, place your carpet with the pile in the snow and pat your back vigorously. With this cure, the colors recover. Another option: occasionally rub the pile with a cloth that you dip in vinegar. You can also occasionally maintain it with a steam cleaner. It loosens the dirt and makes the colors shine again.
