Algae like it moist and mostly grow on the north and west sides. Moisturized plaster can hardly dry here because there is too little sun. Drying takes around two weeks without rain, but long periods of good weather are now rare. Trees and shrubs that are too close to the house cast shadows and keep drying sun rays away.

Another reason for the many algae is the good insulation of our houses. If the insulation works as it should, it keeps the heat inside and the facade stays colder outside. If the outer skin is three to four degrees Celsius cooler than the moist outside air, then the moisture condenses on the wall - just like warm room air on the bottle. The green covering does not cause any structural damage, but it bothers many homeowners.

Remove algae dry

You can remove particularly thick green covering dry by simply scrubbing the patio tiles with a hard broom or a brush. Smaller algae can be removed with a spatula or a wire brush. With a joint scraper, you can get into the smallest gaps and joints thanks to its curved steel blade. You can remove algae just as efficiently with the joint brush. The green covering has no chance due to many hard bristles made of plastic or metal.

Terrace cleaner against the green covering

Use your self-made patio cleaner to fight off green deposits that you could not remove using the dry method. To do this, stir a few spoons of cornstarch in a little lukewarm water. Mix the starch mixture with five liters of warm water and add about 100 grams of soda. You have now created your own patio cleaner for wooden floors.

To clean your stone terrace slabs, add a little potassium permanganate to the mixture. It should be noted here that your cleaner becomes toxic from 15 grams per ten liters. So add seven grams of potassium permanganate to your five liter mixture. Spread the warm mixture quickly and evenly on the terrace and let it soak in for four to five hours. The result after scrubbing will surprise you.

Clean the terrace slabs with the high-pressure cleaner

If you want to clean a larger area of your terrace, you can also use the high-pressure cleaner. By spraying you get all the dirt from the terrace tiles - not just algae. Cleaning is also very convenient, which is certainly also a reason for the popularity of pressure washers. If you do not have a pressure washer, you can also rent one.

But pressure washers are not without controversy, because they can roughen the upper layer of stone coverings, so that under certain circumstances you can achieve the opposite of your intentions. The green color can come back faster and cleaning is necessary at ever shorter intervals. Another disadvantage is that the joints are blown empty. If your terrace floor is made of wood, then you should also leave the pressure washer in the basement. The wood may splinter if you try to clean it with a pressure washer.

Avoid green cover

The best way to deal with greenery is prevention. Use the smoothest materials possible when building your terrace. Here, algae find less support than on rough surfaces. Always lay your patio slabs with a slope. This will prevent waterlogging. If you equip your terrace with wood, then glaze it with beeswax or linseed oil before installing it.

You can also protect your patio by using materials that hardly contain any nutrients for the green covering. Such nutrients include plasticizers in plastics and organic additives, which are often used to improve thin plasters. Mineral colors and plasters, on the other hand, offer hardly any nutrients for algae. So try to use them. Dansand or polymer sand also inhibit the formation of algae and green deposits. Mainly grout with it. There is now also facade paint that contains nano-particles, which permanently prevents algae.
