Many coverings can be used as a floor in the children's room. When buying, you should note that children like to romp and play. The floor in the children's room should also be healthy.

Romping floors

Children perceive their soil with at least four senses: they can see immediately whether they like the color and structure. You can feel whether it is hard or soft, cold or warm, grippy or slippery and whether it springs your jumps. You smell when it evaporates. You hear when he makes noises. It is best for parents to do the same before choosing flooring for their children's room: listen, sniff, take off their shoes and don't forget to hop!

The children's room floor made of cork

Children like to jump off the table or loft bed. A cork floor made of air-filled cells cushions, thus protecting the joints and relieving the spine. Barefooters like the good thermal insulation of cork, and people with sensitive hearing are happy that it cushions sound and absorbs footsteps. The floor comes from the roll, as a tile and in many colors. Cork floors that are glued over their entire surface are made of one layer and completely made of pressed cork or veneered in two layers. Incidentally, this floor covering grows on the tree. Cork oaks are carefully peeled, their trunks remain intact. The bark continues to grow until it is harvested nine years later. Cork oaks can live up to 200 years.

Ready-made cork parquet as floor

The finished parquet consists of cork veneer, which is usually glued to wood fiber boards with tongue and groove. If you lay it floating, i.e. without gluing it to the surface, you save the preparation of the subfloor and thus time. You can immediately walk on the ready-to-live, sealed parquet floor and also immediately re-arrange the furniture. Another advantage is that it can be removed again. Pre-parquet flooring is therefore an ideal floor for tenants. You can move from apartment to apartment with him.

Seal and clean cork floors

The cork surface is treated with oil, wax or lacquer. This surface seal prevents dirt and dust from entering and makes the floor resistant and easy to care for. Cork floors can be sanded and re-sealed if they ever need renovation - provided they are not too thin. To keep them clean, all you need is a broom or vacuum cleaner and a slightly damp mop.

The floor in the children's room made of rubber

Rubber is extracted from the sap of the tropical rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). As a floor covering, it is extremely wear and slip resistant, has high impact sound insulation and is easy to wash off. This is particularly advantageous when the children spontaneously show interest in painting and start to realize themselves creatively on the floor. Rubber floors are available in all colors, the surface structure ranges from nubbed to smooth.

Linoleum as children's room floor

Everyone knows linoleum from gyms. Here the floor is particularly popular because of its slip resistance and durability. However, linoleum in living rooms is also increasingly used. The fabric is now also available in beautiful colors - even as ready-made parquet in the size of planks and cassettes. Hardboard has an approximately two millimeter thick linoleum covering, and the cork underside serves as thermal and impact sound insulation. Linoleum is extracted or cooked from natural raw materials, such as linseed oil, tree resin, wood flour, limestone flour, color pigments and jute.

Wooden floor for the children's room

Every wooden floor is unique. It creates a cozy atmosphere, cushions the gait, is robust, regulates moisture and does not charge electrostatically. Dust can also be easily removed from its smooth surface. To the delight of allergic residents, dust mites have to look for another home. Children can play on a wooden floor all year round, even without stockings. The wood stores heat and dissipates little, which is why the floor always feels warm to the feet.

The classics are solid plank floors or parquet floors. In the living area, they are screwed or nailed onto a wooden beam ceiling or a false floor. If they are laid on concrete, you need support laths as an intermediate structure - wooden floors are only glued over the entire surface in public spaces with very high loads. Solid wood is extremely durable; Worn floors can be sanded and re-sealed several times and then look like new. But this will only be necessary after several decades. The budget decides when it comes to choosing the right wood: common flooring types include beech, maple and oak.

Treatment and maintenance of wood

Wood surfaces are sealed with oil and wax so that dirt and moisture do not penetrate. Alternatively, varnish can also be used. For the sake of health, however, you should rather choose products without organic solvents. Oiled and waxed wooden floors have the advantage over painted ones that annoying scratches or notches can be repaired without completely renovating the floor. Sealed wooden floors can be easily cleaned with a broom or vacuum cleaner. Pippi Longstocking tends to pour a kettle of water onto the floor, binds scrubbing brushes to the feet and slips around the room until the floor is clean, leaving it to dry out to the sun. Wiping with a slightly damp cloth is easier. The amount of water from Miss Longstocking would do more harm in the long run.

Pre-finished wood parquet

Ready-made parquet and other industrially manufactured flooring elements are an alternative. They cost less than solid wooden floors and are quicker to install. They are considered to be particularly dimensionally stable, but can only be sanded once or twice. Its three-layer structure is reminiscent of a sandwich: the top layer consists of three to four millimeters thick precious wood, which is on a middle layer and a lower top layer made of inexpensive wood-based material or softwood. With this structure, the floor “works” less. Pre-finished parquet is laid floating on screed or glued with a parquet adhesive that is as solvent-free as possible. A glued floor is very difficult to remove. Another advantage of floating floors is that they hardly have any leeway and hardly give way. They are therefore good for the feet and the entire musculoskeletal system.

OSB boards as floor

OSB boards (oriented strand boards) look unusual: They are aligned lengthways, crossways and again lengthways from coarse peeling chips (strands), pressed and glued. For the children's room, formaldehyde-free glued, sanded panels are suitable, which can be bought in specialist wood shops. Thanks to their tongue and groove profile, they can be installed floating. To make them easy to care for, the surface is painted, waxed or oiled. Like floorboards, OSB boards only need to be vacuumed or swept and wiped with a damp cloth. Children feel this floor as warm to the feet as other wooden floors.

Laminate floor

The covering is composed of a carrier layer (mostly medium-density fibreboard), decorative laminate and wear-resistant synthetic resin coating. Once the upper layer has worn out, it cannot be renovated. Laminate floors click when you walk on them, which can disturb sensitive ears. Because they feel cool, they need a partner in the children's room - for example, a wool carpet on which children can stay on the floor longer.

Carpet floor in the children's room

Children like to walk barefoot, and that's a good thing: The slippers can stand quietly in the corner as long as the feet stay warm and don't slip. Indestructible carpets are suitable for children's rooms, which warm, feel good and are easy to care for: we leave low-pile, ie "short-haired" carpets on the roll or lay them in the form of tiles. These are particularly suitable for children who often experience a mishap: Loose laid, you can easily replace individual. Single rugs made of wool also look good in the children's room. Sometimes the child crosses the oceans as a pirate captain and sometimes conquers the air as Aladdin on his flying carpet.

Comfortable carpets made of wool

There are also comfortable carpets made of polyacrylic, polyester and other man-made fibers, natural carpets made of coconut and sisal. Nursery residents should be able to stay on the carpet often and for a long time, so it is best to use the material that is also good for the body, namely wool. Wool from sheep is kind to the skin, soft and warm. Goat wool, on the other hand, feels firmer, but otherwise has the same properties as new wool. As a lining, it can absorb a lot of moisture and release it back into the room air. Wool stores heat, insulates noise and does not become electrostatically charged. So you don't get a knock on the doorknob because the carpet is so conductive that it can reduce voltage differences.

Virgin wool fibers are spirally crimped and therefore very elastic. No matter whether you stretch them or compress them, they spring back into their original shape like feathers. Thanks to their high elasticity, wool carpets protect the joints and are very durable - for example, they easily recover from pressure points on furniture.

Wool is inherently insensitive to dirt, as a layer of fat covers and protects the fibers. Even liquid that has leaked can only penetrate slowly. Dirt particles stick to the surface until the vacuum cleaner sucks them up. Carbonated mineral water helps remove stains.

Carpet tiles

There are carpet tiles made of goat hair and new wool, which are laid loose without glue - in more than 40 colors. A foam coating made of plastic weighs down these “self-laying” tiles (Tretford). So you can equip the children's room with very individual mosaics. Loose laying is unfortunately only suitable for rooms that are no larger than 20 square meters.
