Andrea and Sven Fricke show in an impressive way how to proceed in an environmentally friendly, sustainable and climate-friendly way: The clever energy concept even received the energy price.

Christine and Heiner Schmidt thought it was great when their daughter Andrea (46) wanted to move back to their parents' home in Schmalkalden - not alone, but with their own family. Andrea and her husband Sven Fricke (49) did not actually plan major renovations, only the living room should be a little bigger. In fact, however, the couple built vigorously on the first floor, created an open kitchen-living area, a bedroom and children's room, and completely renovated the bathroom. On the ground floor, Frickes also live in the “garden room”, as they call their space for everything. Part of the floor plan is transferred to the parents' old building. "It is very nice for us that the children are so close, " says Christine Schmidt (77). And especially for granddaughter Enny (6), who loves the pool and the garden on the 1, 000 square meter property.

Modification in two stages

The cultivation started in 2011 within half a year. The master electrician Sven Fricke, originally from Leipzig, had good contacts with construction companies. These then clogged up in his new home. Frickes themselves contributed a lot on vacation and at the weekend - also thanks to the support of friends. The own contributions helped to reduce construction costs. In 2017 there was also the carport with the phtovoltaic system on the roof, combined with a 10-kilowatt storage in the entrance area of your house. The whole thing was financed, among other things, by a building society contract and funded by the Thuringian Development Bank (TAB). "We had great support from the TAB, which had launched a new program at the time - Solar Invest, " praises the host.

For each environment - a sophisticated energy concept

In contrast to the older photovoltaic system on the old building, Frickes are allowed to consume a lot of electricity themselves, but because of the TAB funding they are not allowed to enter the public grid in the first five years. Thanks to its storage and the installation of a box, the intelligent gridX energy manager, the small family controls their electricity consumption individually: save during the day and consume in the evening when everyone is there. If the yield is not enough, then you will get pure green electricity from your electricity provider. No storage is profitable for Andreas' parents because they are at home every day as retirees and consume the electricity generated directly. “This gridX energy manager regulates and optimizes the use of our self-generated electricity. The system uses data such as solar radiation to decide what is put into operation or charged - for example, a washing machine or a car. All electrical devices could be controlled via this,”explains Sven Fricke.

He has always had a strong affinity for renewable energies. That is why the master electrician went on to study to become a technician for renewable energies and renewable raw materials. And Andrea thinks: "If environmentally conscious, then right". For the past year she has been driving an electric car with a range of 250 kilometers that charges in the carport. “I drive 50 kilometers to and from work in Meiningen. E-mobility is ideal for this route,”says the Rhön-Rennsteig-Sparkasse employee. "And there was also funding for the purchase." Over the year, the home owners are over 80 percent independent of the public power grid. To do this, clever planning is necessary, as Sven Fricke emphasizes: “How much electricity do I actually use? Does a storage really make sense? What is my investment philosophy? But I can easily calculate the return.”

House with environmental award

The three-generation property even won the energy award (1st place) for its energy and management concept at the district energy conference 2018 of the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen. "We are not eco freaks. We use a lot of electricity - because we generate it ourselves and do not have to pay for it. The investment in the system also pays off over the years,”says Sven Fricke, but adds:“For us, the two photovoltaic systems are a very important contribution to environmental protection, so that future generations can live well here on earth.”

Grants for energetic renovations

Ralf-Peter Schmidt, Area Manager at LBS South Thuringia, has a valuable tip in store for everyone who is now also playing with the idea of an energetic renovation. Because: "Generating your own electricity with a photovoltaic system is only a start. With the energy loan from LBS Hessen-Thüringen you can finance the system on your own residential property. If you want to modernize your property completely energetically, then LBS offers various options at.

My tip: Modernizers often need small to medium loan amounts. The Cash 30 or Cash 50 are ideal for anyone who spontaneously decides on a modernization measure and wants to implement it as quickly as possible. These are so-called blank loans without registration of a land charge. Or homeowners provide for a renovation early on with a home savings contract and secure the low interest rates today. The LBS building society savings contract in the new Xtra Comfort N tariff is ideal as “health insurance” for the house. An energy-efficient home has many advantages: you reduce energy costs, living comfort and real estate value increase, and you do something good for the environment. In addition, funding is available under certain conditions, for example from the Thuringian Development Bank (TAB) or the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW).”
