Coffee alone was yesterday. In the meantime, mail order company Tchibo earns its money with handbags, heating pads, bathroom furniture - and more recently with a tiny house, or rather three. The offered mini house models have different sizes, different looks and are in three different price categories. The trend around miniature houses has apparently reached the mass market.

Mail order company Tchibo likes to dance out of line from time to time and causes a stir with special offers. So there were already houseboats and even private islands to buy from the coffee roaster from Hamburg.

With its three tiny houses, the retail company is picking up on a living trend to which several documentary TV series have even been dedicated in the United States. The Tiny Houses are manufactured by a carpenter who has developed three exclusive models for Tchibo.

If you are also interested in a Tiny House, but do not want to order it from Tchibo, this architect & construction partner finder will help you:

Tiny House 1

Tiny House, Model 1, is a cute building with a pointed roof. With ten square meters of living space plus a small veranda and storage space, it offers sleeping space for two people and costs just under 40, 000 euros in the basic version.

According to Tchibo, all three wooden houses offer high stability, are high-quality insulated and can be heated. The price includes a roadworthy trailer with which the mobile home can be transported. As an advantage for its customers, Tchibo names a free coat of paint worth up to 3, 000 euros.

What is behind the tiny house trend

Tiny Houses are miniature mobile houses. Simplification and minimalism are the goal: The owners want to get rid of unnecessary frills, be flexible and live happier. The houses offer everything you need for life in the smallest of spaces: kitchen, shower, couch and bed. The mini houses can serve as a holiday home, as a creative space or even as a permanent home.

The new living trend comes from the USA. After a large house was considered a status symbol for many decades, many people now define themselves through personal freedom and an individual lifestyle. In Germany too, more and more people are getting enthusiastic about simple life on a small foot. Either as a permanent home because the dream of owning a home means no long-term debt, or as a temporary solution. Many people also use the tiny houses as holiday or weekend homes - with a fixed location or mobile.

Cooperation with joinery in Westphalia

The Tiny Houses distributed by Tchibo are produced by the Diekmann joinery in Hamm, Westphalia. Three weeks after the offer started, Managing Director Stefan Diekmann - like Tchibo - is extremely satisfied with the cooperation. The businessman does not reveal how many orders have been received so far, but customers are currently expected to expect a waiting time of six to eight months before their own tiny house rolls off the factory floor. Around two houses can currently be built per week.

Diekmann is a real Tiny House fan himself: "I got to know this trend in Canada and the USA when I was doing work and travel privately, " he says. It is therefore important to him to raise awareness of the minimalist living trend in Germany as well. This should have been successful with the Tchibo deal - and the handicraft business with its currently 35 employees has created another mainstay alongside the classic carpentry business.

Legal situation around tiny houses in Germany not uniform

The legal situation in Germany is not quite as simple. Basically, a mobile tiny house is usually treated like a caravan that can be parked in camping parks, for example; However, if you want to make it a real home or primary residence, you have to deal with your local building authority, among other things, regarding the parking space and can expect to face some hurdles. Building law is a matter for the state, so it is hardly possible to make generally applicable statements in Germany. Carpenter Stefan Diekmann is meanwhile positive. In any case, the need for this form of living, he believes, is given and is growing, and so the municipalities should also deal with it more.

The Tiny houses could be ordered through Tchibo until June 26, 2018. Anyone who is still interested can contact the carpentry in Hamm later, because Diekmann wants to continue offering the three tiny house models in the future.
