Mending or even laying a carpet can be done easily in a few steps and also saves money. Here you can find out how to repair individual areas and what you should pay attention to when installing a completely new carpet.

Repairing or laying a carpet is not difficult if you know the appropriate tips and tricks. Often it is just a few spots that are dirty and no longer look beautiful. Then it is not always necessary to re-lay the entire carpet immediately, just replacing individual fabric surfaces. Here we show you how to proceed, what different adhesives are available for fixing and how to get a beautiful carpet edge.

Touch up the carpet

If there are fresh stains on the carpet, do not rub, as this spreads the dirt. Instead, the liquid must be dabbed off immediately with a clean cloth or sponge. For stubborn dirt, carpet foam or an electrical cleaning device can also help. However, if cigarette burns have burned a hole in the carpet, there is usually no other option than to replace the spot.

For a precise removal of burn marks, you should punch out the appropriate place with a punch. So that the repaired area in the carpet is not noticed later, it is optimal if the carpet patch looks as similar as possible to the original carpet. If you don't find anything suitable, you can also cut out a patch under the cabinet and insert it in the appropriate place. Once you have cut your patch and punched out or cut out the area in the carpet, the cut edges in the carpet must now be cut straight and cleaned. With a low pile or needle felt, the "double cut" is particularly recommended. To do this, simply lay both carpets on top of each other and cut both layers with one cut. The result: the carpet edges fit exactly together.

Before using the patch, you should remove the remnants of the carpet adhesive on the floor with a spatula. Finally, the new replacement piece can be tapped into the vacant area with carpet adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape and with a rubber hammer. Tip: Make sure that the patch fibers point in the same direction as that of the carpet, otherwise the new area is darker.

Individual places can be exchanged simply by punching out the corresponding area and replacing it with a suitable patch.

Relocate carpeting

If the carpet is very old = " or simply no longer beautiful, it is worth installing a completely new carpet.

Remove old carpeting

Carpet strips can usually be easily removed from the wall with a spatula. Simply slide the spatula behind the baseboard and lift it up. How easy it is to remove old carpets mainly depends on the carpet gluing. To do this, you first need to determine how your carpet was attached. If the strips are adhesive, they can be removed with a little solvent. In the case of water-soluble glue, the entire carpet surface should be moistened with water and left to work for about one to two hours. Then it can be easily removed by hand. Occasionally the carpet was also glued heavily. Then mostly only working with a stripper helps. The mechanical device can be borrowed from hardware stores. The blade on the front of the machine can also be used to remove very stubborn glue from the floor.

Soil preparation

If there are still adhesive and carpet residues on the floor, they must first be completely removed with a spatula. Otherwise there is a risk of mold formation under the new carpet. Prime porous floors with a primer: with synthetic resin solvent, epodix resin or a dispersion primer. Prepare very dense surfaces such as chipboard, stoneware or magnesia screed with a neoprene coat. You can remove unevenness with a leveling compound.

Before the new carpet can be installed, all of the adhesive residue must be removed from the floor underneath. Bumps should also be leveled out.

Step-by-step instructions: Lay carpet

First measure the entire room and buy the new carpet. If it is cut to size, it can be spread out on the floor. Make sure that the flooring is so large that it protrudes a bit on the walls. It is best to let the carpet rest for a few hours so that it can lie down.

Then the excess is shortened to about 10 centimeters and the carpet is folded back on one side. If the covering is to stick to the entire surface of the floor, glue is suitable for filling. Choose the most suitable for you from these four types of adhesive:

Water-soluble glue is not suitable for carpets sensitive to moisture
Solvent-based adhesive adhere quickly and are flammable
Contact glue on

Rubber base

does not allow error correction: it sticks immediately
Reaction resin adhesive is mostly sensitive to moisture during processing and later water and chemical resistant

Spread the adhesive over the entire surface with the notched trowel in sheets. And only as much as you can process until the adhesive dries. Then press the floor covering from the middle to the wall onto the floor. Avoid bulges or bumps.

Only apply as much glue as you can apply before it dries.

An alternative to the mentioned adhesives is the double-sided adhesive tape. This can be used if you want to take the carpet with you in the event of a change of residence or if the carpet needs to be removed when you move out. To do this, lay the tape along the edges of the carpet. If the carpet is large, the tape should also be glued crosswise over the area. Then peel off the protective paper on top, put the carpet on and press it on. Again, you should avoid wave formation if possible.

If you want to take the carpet with you when you move or you have to remove it when you move out, double-sided adhesive tape is ideal for fixing the carpet to the floor.

More tips

Adjust carpeting

Press the carpet firmly against the edge with a plastic spatula or a strip and cut it with a carpet knife or edge cutter. Or you can mark the edge with needles from the front, fold it over and cut it on the back.

If you press the carpet firmly with a plastic spatula or a strip, it will be easier to cut.

Inconspicuous seams

If the carpet has to be divided, seams should always run perpendicular to the main window wall.

Always cut near areas perpendicular to the wall. This is the least noticeable way.

Nice edge

There are various options for bridging the joint all the way to the wall:

  • Wooden strip
  • Plastic profile
  • Profile with carpet cover
  • tied carpet strip

Tip: Special hollow strips hide loose television and telephone cables.

Skirting boards bridge the joint all the way to the wall so that the edge of the carpet looks better. From left to right: wooden strip, plastic profile, profile with carpet cover and linked carpet strips.
