If there are cracks in the floor of the balcony and the actually brown wood of the railing becomes lighter, it is time to renovate the balcony. If both are no longer in order, you cannot avoid a complete balcony renovation. The question is whether the damage can still be repaired or not.

Basically, the thickness of the wallet plays an important role in balcony renovation. It is also important to ask whether the floor has been installed correctly or whether the balcony has been worked properly. If you want to start renovating the balcony in the summer, there are several quick but effective options available with various methods.

Why cracks appear on balcony tiles

If cracks appear in balcony tiles, this is primarily due to two factors: the nature of the tiles and the material of the substrate. With temperature differences of up to 100 degrees Celsius from summer to winter, the material changes its condition. Ceramic tiles expand when warm and contract when cold. Here it depends on the surface under the tiles. If the surface does not allow the material to stretch and contract, tensions arise and the tiles tear. Since tile manufacturers do not know which floor the tiles are laid on, they only give a few years guarantee on their products. So keep in mind that only frost protection alone is of little use. Place great emphasis on processing with primer, glue and mortar.

Renovating the balcony: repairing the tiles

Not everyone is in the mood for large balcony renovation campaigns when they see small cracks. If you want to make porous tiles, joints and cracks watertight, simple sealing systems are a cost and labor-saving solution.

After the tiles have been cleaned, simply pour out the balcony impregnation and spread it with a rubber squeegee. After a contact time of about five minutes, wipe with a damp cloth. The result is impressive. The tile surface remains waterproof for months, but is unchanged in color and breathable.

Renovation of balconies by laying tiles on tiles

For those who want to simplify their work and do not want to knock out old tiles, there is a solution for laying tiles on tiles, in which the same operations are carried out as for new tiles and the same materials are used. Various manufacturers produce pourable, flexible powder glue. You can simply apply it - it sticks without voids. After three hours the tiles can be walked on and after another three you can start grouting. However, the risk of cracking is not reduced by laying tiles on top of each other.

Balcony renovation by renewing the tiles

If you have decided to replace the tiles, then you should also consider a drainage system. In glazed, vapor diffusion-tight tiles, the water that rises when heated collects on the underside. The moisture accumulated in the pores then causes the glaze to burst after some time. If you create a suitable drainage before applying the flooring, you can drain the leachate in a targeted manner. Thanks to drainage, you would be protected from damage caused by backwater.

Important preparation for the balcony renovation

Remove the old flooring. The surface must be dry, dust-free and level. Compensate for larger bumps with filler and let them dry. There are extra renovation systems for balcony coverings, where a special mat serves as a base. The mat is waterproof and bridges small bumps. It prevents cracks caused by temperature-related tensions.

Lay tracks

Comb mortar or adhesive about four millimeters thin. Embed angle profiles on the outer edges. Cut individual mat sheets and butt the butt joints. Fill the mat transitions with two-component sealing adhesive and then cover them with a wide sealing tape. Some profiles fundamentally reinforce the transition from the floor to the wall.

Get Gradients

Balcony floors always have a gradient of 1.5 to 2 percent away from the house. To check the slope, place a ruler on the floor under the railing. This is 1.5 centimeters high. Place a 100 centimeter long bar at right angles on the folding rule. The bar therefore points from the railing to the house or the wall. Now place a spirit level on the bar. If the spirit level shows the horizontal, the slope is correct, otherwise structural damage due to water accumulation is preprogrammed.

Balcony renovation in natural look

The best way to protect the wood in its natural color from wind and weather is to repaint it. In the first step, brush and wipe dust and dirt off the wood. You can also remove visibly chipped old painting parts or films. You can then apply the wood glaze or primer in the direction of the grain. Preferably paint with a flat, soft brush. Primers protect against discoloration and are therefore particularly recommended for light or untreated woods. After twelve hours of drying time, apply the glaze a second time. Incidentally, there are also wood primers and glazes made from purely natural raw materials. They are manufactured without petrochemicals and are 100 percent biodegradable.

Weather protection paints for wooden railings

If you have decided to repaint the wooden railing, special weather protection colors are recommended. Again, you have to clean the wood beforehand. To do this, the old boards are properly processed with a wire brush and or orbital sander. Make sure that you have really removed any remaining old paint before applying the new paint. Use a soft flat brush for the base coat as well as the weather protection coat. You can apply the weather protection coat immediately after the base coat. After waiting two hours, you can start painting. Thanks to repeated strokes, the color is even and shows its full intensity. With a good base material, the color lasts up to ten years. If you lightly roughen the wood with sandpaper before the final coat, it will hold even better.
