A garage floor coating has a number of advantages: Thanks to the coating, your garage floor is not only resistant to oils, water or dirt of any kind, but also to wear and tear. In addition, the smoothed floor is easy to clean. The floor coating also ensures visual enhancement. Finally, you can color the surface according to your own wishes.

Good to know: There are one- and two-component polyurethane products and two-component epoxy material for garage floor coating in specialist shops. Processing is more sensitive to moisture, the epoxy material reacts to temperature fluctuations. Both are also available solvent-free.

While the floor coatings used to be only available in gray or beige, companies now also offer different colors. Tip: You can work beautiful patterns into the floor with litter chips; a funnel gun spreads the color dots evenly and easily.

Step-by-step instructions: How to coat your garage floor

Before you can coat your garage floor, you should take care of the old concrete floor or screed. To test its texture, use a sharp tool to carve longitudinal and transverse lines into the ground at intervals of half a centimeter. Then run the steel brush over the areas: If the floor crumbles and you discover small damaged areas, remove the loose pieces and replace the open areas with filler. Finally, carefully sand the floor. Depending on the damage, proceed as follows.

Fill cracks

You can widen larger cracks with the angle grinder. After priming, fill the cracks wet with wet with mortar. Shed small cracks with elastic liquid plastic. If the floor is cracked or prone to cracking, a particularly elastic coating is recommended.

Pave dents

You can compensate for shallow depressions to a depth of two millimeters with the floor spatula. A flow filler is suitable for depressions up to ten millimeters. Damage points up to 30 millimeters deep can be filled with repair mortar. After priming, work wet on wet. The new material generally holds better on an adhesive bridge.

Edit borders

The edges of damaged areas must not run out flat, but must be cut vertically with a hammer and chisel or with a grinder. An edge height of approximately two millimeters is sufficient for flow fillers. A coarser repair mortar requires at least four millimeters.

Attention: If the old garage floor is torn over a large area, you are forced to sand the entire floor and lay a new screed.

Before coating the garage floor, the surface must be clean, absorbent, spotless, firm and level. To do this, remove loose dirt with a broom, loosen thicker layers with a spatula. If you encounter oil stains, use a special oil stain remover.

With the help of a water hose or high-pressure cleaner, you spray off the garage floor and process it with a cleaning product for concrete surfaces. After the product has been drawn in according to the manufacturer's instructions, wipe it off with a puller including a rubber lip. Then use fresh water and work the soil with it. Then let it dry properly.

Deep ground solidifies and seals off water and oil stains: it reduces the absorbency of the surface, thus increasing the overall adhesion of the coating. There are oil-based and oil-free primers, solvent-based and water-thinnable. You can avoid paint damage if the primer contains the same components as the selected coating (see ingredients).

Mix the liquid well and apply with a brush, a flat brush or a squeegee. Attention: No puddles may arise! If areas should become matt immediately after application, prime again with a thin layer of wet on wet. Diluted solvent-free coating material can be used as a primer - then the primer and coating material are certainly coordinated!

The recommended priming drying time is between 12 and 48 hours.

Good to know: The surface must not be colder than five degrees Celsius, otherwise the flow properties deteriorate: two-component material hardens too slowly. Favorable processing temperatures are between 15 and 25 degrees. Greater heat causes the material to solidify too quickly: the time span in which it can be processed becomes too short.

As a rule, the coating can be subjected to mechanical stress after one to two days and chemical stress after about a week. Spread the liquid plastic evenly covering, ideally with a wide brush or with a medium-pile roller. A double coat is recommended for a normal load. Tip: adding a little quartz sand makes the surface more non-slip!

After about 24 hours you can enter the new garage floor. Larger loads, such as the weight of a car, are advisable after a week.
