What are facade panels?

As the name suggests, facade panels are elongated, round, square or polygonal panels that are used as an external facade. Facade panels form the top layer of the so-called rear-ventilated facade. They can also be installed on the roof instead of tiles. Material, ecology, costs, maintenance, sustainability and appearance are very different.

What material are facade panels made of?

There are metal fiberboard:

  • Aluminum (often with a plastic core and an aluminum coating)
  • Titanium zinc
  • copper
  • stole
  • stainless steel

Anyone who chooses metal facade panels can also choose whether they should be painted, whether they should have a metallic sheen (steel and stainless steel), whether they should change their color due to the weather (copper) or whether they should be in one the weather changed color will be attached.

There are also facade panels made of so-called composite materials:

  • Fiber cement (cellulose and cement, also known under the manufacturer's name Eternit)
  • pressed rock wool
  • Bioplastic (wood fibers, wood flour and plastic polymers)
  • Laminates or high-pressure laminates (HPL for short, cellulose fibers)

The third group is made of ceramic and natural stone facade panels:

  • clinker
  • granite
  • jaw
  • Sandstone
  • Quartzite

The patterns in the stones and the processing method for the individual plates - i.e. brushing, polishing or flaming - create very individual patterns for the natural materials. The same applies to the very frost-resistant clinker bricks, which can also differ greatly in shape and color.

Facade panels made of wood are very maintenance-intensive. They are made of:

  • larch
  • jaw
  • Spruce
  • Douglas fir

A fringe group currently form the facade panels made of glass fiber concrete for private use. They can be designed very individually and can even be 3D modeled and therefore have a high price.

The facade panels made of glass are similarly expensive. They are often used by public developers and can, for example, still be backlit or used to "model" a 3D company logo. An application example: In the new buildings of a well-known German supermarket chain, glass facade panels are used for almost the entire building. The entrance is lifted off the gray building behind with a red archway and the four-letter company name. Facade panels made of polycarbonate, so-called multi-wall panels, are the cheapest.

Available in many colors

Nowadays, facade panels also have a lot to offer when it comes to color: From deep black to light beige to fiery red. In addition, facade panels also come in a romantic wood look or traditional clinker look. So if you would like to have your house gables clad in wood, but shy away from regular painting and you are not enthusiastic about the wooden facade panels, then you could opt for wooden-look facade panels but made of fiber cement. The manufacturers give a guarantee of up to 40 years.

Some facade panels are also suitable for painting over. If there is no color of your choice, simply use the facade panels as a plaster base and use the properties of the panels to additionally insulate and protect your house.

Advantages of facade panels

Storm-proof, hail-proof, water-repellent, impact-resistant, heat-regulating, sound and cold-insulating as well as unbreakable - this is how the manufacturers advertise their facade panels. Depending on the material, they are lightning-resistant and can withstand a lot of weight, including heavy snow loads on the roof. Compared to conventional bricks, facade panels are easy to transport and therefore also suitable for renovating or building houses in remote regions - because the facade panels can be delivered in a helicopter without any problems. Speaking of extreme weather: If you live in a region that is frequently threatened by flooding, you can even build flood protection for your home from facade panels in the plug-in system.

Disadvantages of facade panels

If you do not work exactly when fixing the facade panels, you risk that the panels are not put together properly and slots are created, into which it rains and where there is a risk of breakage. If you feel that you cannot do this work on your own, you should ask for the help of an expert at an early stage - otherwise you will later have problems with water in the walls.

Anyone who buys very cheap facade panels will have to expect the system to have a fairly short life. In addition, the very inexpensive panels are often very maintenance and cleaning-intensive, as they flake off quickly and, due to a missing or bad coating, the dirt does not roll off, but settles. In addition, they are often not recyclable. So if you have to take it off after a few years because the look is no longer correct or your walls are wet, then the raw material can no longer be used.

What do facade panels cost?

If you are considering designing your house or the roof with facade panels, then you should not look at the budget at first, but first consider which style you would like and which color is suitable for you. Then you can have a look around, which variant is available in which color for your wallet. Don't forget to include any follow-up costs. Get in touch with one of the manufacturers and get advice on what works for your home and your budget. Don't just buy facade panels online.

Rough guidelines for the cost of facade panels are:

  • Most materials are available between 20 and 200 euros per square meter.
  • Plastic facade panels cost around 11 to 60 euros per square meter.
  • Facade panels made of fiber cement are around 10 to 135 euros per square meter.
  • The plates made of glass, wood or natural stones vary greatly depending on the manufacturer.

If you want to occupy an area of 120 square meters with the facade panels and pay 24 euros per square meter for the panels, you will spend an average of around 3300 euros, including the slats and screws. This price does not include insulation and rental fees for the scaffolding, which you will probably need to be able to install the facade panels anywhere.

How are facade panels attached?

The principle of the facade panels is the same for all types and types: There is insulation on the masonry of your house. Wooden or metal slats, lengthways and crossways, are then placed on this insulation, which together form a kind of large grid. Then the facade panels are attached. This type of fastening also creates natural sound insulation.

Important: the rear ventilation of the facade panels must work very well - the air must be able to circulate as freely as possible. It is therefore best to choose roof battens for the substructure. They should be at least 24 by 48 millimeters thick, 40 by 60 millimeters is better.

The roof battens should be impregnated before installation. Continuous plug-in systems, already specified by the manufacturers, make assembly easier for the handyman. The assembly kit that is usually included also helps you with your work. It is your sole responsibility to measure the facade panels to the exact millimeter when cutting, correct cutting and observing the fixing points. So that the facade panels can expand due to the weather, many manufacturers recommend drilling long holes instead of rounder ones. The manufacturer of the facade panels will explain such subtleties to you when purchasing and in the assembly instructions.
