If you want to lay a sewage pipe yourself, there are a few points to consider. When laying and fastening the pipes professionally, for example, you have to adhere to slopes and angles - otherwise the sewage pipes are either leaky or water accumulates in them. Not only can this be expensive, it can also be extremely uncomfortable.

What materials are sewage pipes made of?

There are basically three types of sewage pipes: the gray, the red and the green. The gray sewage pipes are ordinary HT pipes for indoor use. They are made of polypropylene (PP) and can withstand high temperatures and aggressive waste water. They are also flame retardant. There are also red sewage pipes for outdoor use. These so-called KG pipes are made of PVC. Green pipes are reinforced and therefore more resilient.

Lay sewage pipes as a system

Plug systems facilitate the laying of sewage pipes. For this you will find straight and curved fittings, as well as branches that bring different cables together in the hardware store. Fittings are available in different lengths:

  • Straight fittings with lengths of 25, 50, 100 and 200 centimeters are commercially available
  • You get curved fittings (knees) with angles of 15, 30, 45, 67 and 87 degrees
  • Branches connect two or three lines

If you lay sewage pipes inside, you need additional clamps to fix the pipes to the wall. Otherwise, sewage pipes are usually connected with sockets. Push the pipes into the sleeve at both ends. Inside is a rubber sealing ring, which ensures that no water can leak out at the connection point.

What diameter does the sewage pipe need?

When choosing the right diameter, you must note that a sewage pipe to the inlet is getting smaller and smaller. The manifolds are always larger in diameter than the line to the sink, toilet or dishwasher. There are a variety of sewage pipes with different diameters on offer in the hardware store. There are sewage pipes for the ground, for example, with a diameter of 110 or 125 millimeters. 100 millimeters are common for toilets. Bathtubs are mostly connected with pipes from 50 to 75 millimeters. With wash basins, sinks and similar connections with lower flow, you are well advised with 40 to 50 millimeters. The inside diameter is identified by the nominal value and corresponds to the nominal diameter (DN).

The right slope for sewage pipes

Why is the slope so important when laying sewage pipes? Because otherwise the wastewater cannot flow away, builds up and leads to long-term damage. Therefore, you should never lay waste water pipes completely horizontally. The pipes should always have a gradient of one to three percent. For example, if you have a pipe that is one meter long, the slope should be one to three centimeters. You should never go below the minimum gradient. The golden mean of two percent is recommended for most projects.

Avoid large angles

So that wastewater runs off, it should encounter as few obstacles as possible. Because the more it is braked, the higher the risk that particles will settle on these branches and angles, which can lead to damage and blockages in the long term. Therefore, do not use a 90-degree angle - experts recommend using two 45-degree bends instead.

Can you cut sewage pipes yourself?

You often have to cut sewage pipes yourself to get them to the required length. A saw with fine teeth is best suited for cutting. Important: Make the cut exactly perpendicular to the pipe so that the cut surface becomes straight - very helpful are fine saws with a guide, such as those used for miter cuts on wood. After cutting, you should grind the outside of the pipe with a fine file so that it slides neatly into the socket. Cut edges and burrs on the inside must be smoothed very carefully with a sharp knife, otherwise dirt particles will accumulate here over time.

What should you watch out for when laying and fastening sewage pipes?

When laying sewage pipes, you should never completely insert the pipes into one another so that they can expand when exposed to heat. It is better to pull the pipes out of the socket again about one centimeter until they stop. Alternatively, you can also measure the correct insertion depth beforehand with a folding rule and mark it on the pipe with a felt pen. The plugging together is made easier if you thoroughly lubricate both the inside of the sleeve and the outside of the pipe end with sliding paste. It only costs a few euros and allows you to position the sewage pipe with little effort so that it fits properly. In addition, you do not strain the rubber seals in the sleeve unnecessarily. It is best to always include a cleaning pipe. You can use a branch with a screw-on cover to check the sewage pipes and, if necessary, to clean them more easily. This control opening should be created at a transition to a larger pipe and be located far from the drain.

When laying waste water pipes, the sleeves of each pipe section should always be at the higher point, so that fewer deposits form at the transition from one pipe to the next. You should always include clamps for attaching sewage pipes in front of or behind sleeves and bends. In this way, the sewage system is optimally stabilized and remains exactly in position. Pipes that run vertically can sink slightly - so the following applies here: the pipe must be fastened with a clamp at least every two meters. Drive safer with one-meter intervals. For long, straight horizontal pipe sections, a distance of ten times the pipe diameter is recommended, i.e. 75 centimeters for a 75 millimeter pipe (DN 75).

Instructions: Lay the sewage pipe inside

If you lay sewage pipes inside, they run along the floor or in / along the wall. Check in advance whether you can really lay the pipes in the wall. Thin walls and load-bearing walls are not suitable for this. In case of doubt, a structural engineer can tell you whether you can use the walls or better lay the pipes outside the walls. Lightweight walls are ideal for the invisible installation of sewage pipes - here the pipes can be fastened to the supporting structure on the inside using special brackets. Only then is the insulation material installed and the wall surfaces made of wood or plasterboard installed.

To lay sewage pipes in the wall or floor, proceed as follows:

  1. Draw the course of the sewage pipes with two lines and allow for some additional scope. With smaller pipes, one centimeter is often sufficient.
  2. Before you lay the pipes, put the pipes together as a test to check whether everything fits together.
  3. Cut the ducts for the pipes on both sides with a cut-off machine and knock out the masonry with a hammer and chisel or a hammer drill.
  4. Lay the pipes.
  5. Check the tightness of the pipes with a flushing test.
  6. Plaster the openings in the wall or floor.

If you want to mount the pipes outside the wall, mark drill holes for the clamps beforehand so that you know how many of them you need. You provide the drill holes with dowels and then lay the pipes using the brackets.

Instructions: Lay the sewage pipe outside

Wastewater pipes that are laid outside in the ground must run at a minimum depth of 80 to 100 centimeters. If the floor is particularly stressed at the planned location, a depth of at least 1.50 meters is advisable.

  1. Dig a trench in which you can lay the sewage pipes in the middle. Install a gradient of at least one percent now.
  2. Compact the subsoil and put a layer of sand about ten centimeters high in the bottom of the trench, on which the sewage pipe rests well everywhere. Make sure that there are no voids under the sewage pipe in the floor.
  3. Lay each pipe upwards and with the sleeves against the direction of flow.
  4. Branches should be 45 degrees (like inside), bends between 15 and 45 degrees.
  5. If the pipe is correct, fill the trench with filling sand up to 40 centimeters below the surface and compact it in layers with a hand rammer. Alternatively, you can slurry the sand with water.
  6. The remaining trench is filled with the excavated earth. This must also be compacted in layers.
  7. Draw the course of the sewage pipe down to the centimeter in your property plan so that you can easily find it again in the event of problems.
