We can observe condensation on the window, especially in winter or after taking a shower: Crucial for the development of so-called “condensation water” is a temperature gradient and a high level of humidity in the room. Warm air can absorb more moisture than cold air. If the heated air hits the cold window, the moisture contained in the air condenses and is reflected in the form of water on the inside of the window. If condensation forms on the window, this indicates that there is a high level of humidity inside the room. In small quantities, condensed water is not a problem and can hardly be avoided. However, if the water is not removed promptly, there is a risk of mold growth, which can be harmful to health. In addition, the moisture in wooden windows can lead to rotting in the long run.

Condensed water mainly arises at the weaknesses in the heat of a house. These include, for example, poorly or not insulated outer walls, windows and sloping ceilings. An unfavorable arrangement of radiators, window sills or curtains also restricts the air circulation along the entire surface. For example, if there is a closed window sill under a skylight, the rising warm air can no longer reach the lower area of ​​the window. The result: moisture and the formation of mold. Scientific studies have shown that the growth of mold does not even require the visible formation of condensed water. Mold can develop if the relative humidity on the component surfaces is 80 percent for a long time.

New buildings

Buildings used to be less well insulated than they are today. Adequate air exchange nevertheless took place through leaky windows and doors. However, since windows nowadays have particularly good seals and are double and triple glazed, the moisture usually stays in the room and has no way of escaping. It is therefore all the more important to ensure an ideal room climate through proper heating and ventilation.

Problems usually arise when installing new windows in old, poorly insulated walls. Because the original air exchange is no longer possible and mold forms on the cold walls or in the wall corners.

Roof windows are exposed to the weather much more than facade windows. Snow, hail, rain and storm cool them down heavily. The moist, warm air rising inside the building envelope cools at the attic windows and condenses on the panes. In order to avoid the formation of condensed water and the resulting formation of mold, an increase in the surface temperatures in these areas is necessary, for example due to radiators attached under the windows. They should be weak in the cold months, but should always be in operation, so that constantly warm air warms the window panes and fogs them less. The right lining also ensures optimal warm air flow. The use of specially coated insulating glass can also further reduce the formation of condensed water, because the higher the thermal insulation value of a pane, the less cold gets into the room and thus to the pane. Less moisture condenses on its “warm” inside because the saturated air later falls below the dew point.

Dry wet laundry inside

Wet laundry is often dried indoors in winter. The resulting high humidity is reflected as condensation in cold places such as window panes or cold walls. As a result, mold can form and at the same time you need more heating energy, since it takes longer to heat the rooms. It is therefore better to hang the laundry outside or use a tumble dryer in winter.

If you hang your laundry indoors in winter, it promotes the formation of condensation. It is better to use a clothes dryer. In summer the laundry can be hung outside.

What to do with condensed water?

The best way to deal with condensation is to blow out the air daily for about 10 to 15 minutes. So-called cross ventilation on opposite windows is also particularly effective - preferably immediately after getting up in the morning. The same applies every time after showering. In any case, avoid continuous ventilation, which only cools down the room.

If a lot of condensation has formed, you can simply wipe the water off the window with a towel - but it still has to be ventilated. Also make sure that the temperature in the living room is as constant as possible throughout the day. About 18 degrees Celsius is recommended for the bedroom, 21 to 23 degrees Celsius are common in the living area and in the bathroom.

As far as air humidity is concerned, humidity values ​​between 40 and 60 percent are permitted. It can also be a little more in the bathroom. You can measure the value with a hygrometer.

Condensed water - an ongoing problem

It can also happen that your windows mist up between the panes, making condensation a permanent problem. This usually occurs with modern windows that consist of several glass panes. If there is water in the space between the panes, it can also be assumed that the inner pane is no longer optimally insulated. In the case of new windows, the space between the panes is empty in order to achieve the highest possible thermal insulation. The window also loses its transparency due to the condensation. In such cases, the disc should be replaced.
