This is how you can optimally design your hallway

Coming home and feeling good - that's what you want. It is all the more surprising that the entrance area in particular is rarely designed to be cozy - it often appears chaotic rather than inviting. However, there are many tricks to make the hallway cozy.

Most of the time there is good will, but poorly designed rooms make it very difficult to set up a hallway. The most common problem here: Too little space, because there is no prescribed minimum size for corridors and hallways - just one meter wide is enough for two people to pass each other. But how can the entrance look spacious if there is little space available? Especially since you also want to store numerous things like jackets, shoes and Co. in the hallway.

Interior design made easy

Bright colors are a real magic tool in the narrow hallway: they pretend to be wide by reflecting daylight and artificial light. Remember not only when choosing the wall color, but also with the color of the flooring. This should move into adjacent rooms, because changing materials on the door sills unnecessarily mark corridors. Bright carpets or runners, which make the hallway appear larger and more comfortable, offer good help here. In the case of the hallway, cotton carpets are particularly suitable because they are washable.

Good lighting is also important to visually expand the space. Pay attention to an even light that softens strong shadow areas, for example with spots that illuminate the ceiling. Another trick is large mirrors - you can see surfaces and light twice. Unfortunately, however, there is also disorder, which looks like tightness to the eye. You cannot avoid regular tidying up in the hallway if you want to make it cozy. There are often special problems in old buildings with unfavorable proportions: the corridor is large, but too high. A suspended ceiling can help here. Simply drape the fabric sail over the poles. Hanged in front of light sources, they also act as soft focus. Chandeliers are suitable as eye-catchers for high ceilings - LED lights or small lamps are more suitable for low ceilings.

Design a small hallway: how to create space

If you have little floor space in the hallway and hallway, you have to place your furniture cleverly. However, you can set up your hallway so that it still offers enough storage space. If you have a small hallway, wall wardrobes and shelves are ideal. This saves you a lot of space and the area appears larger. Chests of drawers are only suitable if you have a large hallway. Otherwise it looks bulky and uncomfortable. Is your hallway very narrow? Then it is best to line up all the furniture next to each other on a wall and not distribute them left and right. This is how you create a clear line.

If you set up a square hallway, it is worth using the walls and, for example, attaching hanging shelves or beautiful clothes hooks instead of cupboards. And: Always move furniture into the corner to gain space in the middle.

Shoe cabinets: up

The modern shoe cabinets, in which the shoes are stored upright and foldable, are real space savers because they take up more space in height than in width. But take a shoe with you to try it out. Few of these cabinets are suitable for large shoes, boots or the like.

A bank fulfills many functions

A bench in the entrance area has to fulfill many functions: It is not just a seat, but also an important storage space. Some family members or visitors prefer to sit down to put on their shoes, while others want to put their shopping on them. When designing a small hallway, you should therefore definitely use benches with seats that can be folded up so that you can gain additional storage space from the piece of furniture - similar to a chest. You will see: hats, gloves and scarves can be stowed away in no time!

Use niches

The owners of a niche in the hallway can count themselves lucky: it can be used excellently as storage space. A sliding door or a split door is more practical than a door leaf that projects open into the room and blocks the passage. But you can also simply put a curtain behind which you can hide your personal belongings. Our tip: Use a solid color fabric. Patterns look very restless, which further shrinks a small space.

Space under the stairs

Storage space is often unused under stairs. With simple ladder shelving systems (for example from Ikea), such a niche can be set up easily and inexpensively. The matching louvre doors from the hardware store or a curtain elegantly conceal the whole and also protect against dust. However, open stairs must first be sealed down with wood or plasterboard.

If spatial defects are well concealed, accessories create a feel-good atmosphere in the hallway: a beautiful vase here or a picture there, and visitors feel welcome. Nevertheless, less is more - otherwise the hallway immediately loses its calm and open appearance.
