Glass fiber wallpapers can mainly be recognized by their pattern, which is also called "jacquard pattern". With this binding technique it is possible to weave the glass fibers together in very different ways and thus also to produce individual patterns such as company logos. However, the most common is the herringbone or diamond pattern. Since fiberglass wallpapers are particularly easy to clean, they are mainly used in medical practices or hospitals. There is also some reason to put the rather inconspicuous wallpaper in your own house.

Glass fiber wallpapers have a lifespan of up to 30 years. This is mainly due to their dense structure, which is both shockproof and extremely hard-wearing, as well as rot-resistant. It is about seven times more stable than classic woodchip wallpaper and can easily cover and bridge cracks and small holes in walls.

It is often used in hospitals because it is water-repellent and therefore very easy to clean. But these properties are also ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. If it is then painted with paint, the glass fiber wallpaper is even almost sterile. In contrast to tiles, the wallpaper has no joints in which bacteria or pathogens can collect - a great advantage for allergy sufferers who can wash and disinfect the wallpaper again and again.

Glass fiber wallpapers are also flame retardant and belong to fire protection class 1 according to DIN 4102. The fact that no toxic, fire-retardant additives are used in the production means that no toxic gases are generated in the event of a fire.

If the white color is too monotonous, you also have the option of painting the wallpaper with latex paint or varnishing it with a silky sheen. Color looks particularly noble on the glass fiber.

So both the kitchen and the bathroom can be suitable, but the children's room is also a suitable place. Because fingerprints or one or the other color stain can be removed more easily than on a conventional wallpaper. In addition, a child's taste changes over time. Then it is helpful if the glass fiber wallpaper can be painted several times.

Disadvantages of glass fiber wallpaper

The glass fiber wallpaper is made by pulling molten raw glass into long, thin threads. The resulting yarn is then processed into a fabric using special weaving machines and binding techniques. Finally, the fabric has to be finished. This so-called finish gives the wallpaper its characteristic structure and special properties. But the manufacture of glass fiber wallpapers is often criticized. Because the glass fiber wallpaper consists of artificial mineral fibers, which in turn are made from bottle glass, window glass, sand, soda, lime, chemical additives and fluxes and are made into fibers using a nozzle or centrifugal process. This creates glass dust that irritates the respiratory tract and skin. It is therefore advisable to carry out the wallpapering of the glass fiber wallpaper only with protective clothing. In addition, the wallpaper must be attached with dispersion adhesive, which in turn can trigger allergic reactions.

Glass fiber wallpapers are standard in hospitals and medical practices. Because they are easy to clean and almost sterile. In the private living environment, however, one has to consider that the glass fiber wallpaper has hardly any moisture regulating properties and is therefore not conducive to a healthy indoor climate.

If you want to paint the glass fiber wallpaper, choose either emulsion paint or latex paint. Both contain plastic binders that have a negative impact on the indoor climate. Because the combination of glass fiber wallpaper, adhesive and wall paint makes the wallpaper completely diffusion-proof. So it is advantageous that the wallpaper is water-repellent, but at the same time it also means that such walls do not have the ability to temporarily store and release water vapor when the room air is drier. It is precisely these moisture-regulating properties that are indispensable for a good indoor climate.

If you still want fiberglass wallpaper in your house, you should limit yourself to individual walls, for example, in order to create a balance between sealed and moisture-regulating walls. This method also saves money, because fiberglass wallpapers are significantly more expensive than woodchip or vinyl wallpapers.

In all cases, you should make sure that the product is certified according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This globally uniform, independent testing system guarantees product safety and thus consumer protection. All parts of an article must meet the required criteria.

If you want to dispose of an old glass fiber wallpaper, you have to consider that it does not belong in the normal household waste, but must be placed in a special waste container at a landfill. Containers for mineral fiber disposal can be obtained from a container service or a recycling center.
