Winter depression affects many people. Fog, cold, drizzle - in autumn and winter many lose their desire to be active outdoors. What can help is gardening. It is good for body and mind - the pulse calms down, the heart rate drops and blood pressure is balanced. If you regularly garden in the cold season, you are not only doing something good for your plants, but also for your health.

Counteract winter depression with gardening

In autumn and winter, diseases such as colds and flu infections increase regularly. Especially in the transition from summer to winter, the immune system has to perform at its best. If you want to get your immune system going, you should allow your body daylight, fresh air and exercise every day. Regular gardening is a good way to strengthen the immune system. The body gets used to strong temperature fluctuations and will therefore not be blown away by every breath of cold wind in the future. The movement stimulates the heart and circulation, the whole body is optimally supplied with blood, supplied with fresh oxygen and the fat burning is stimulated. That helps against winter depression.

Light shower against winter depression

Anyone who stays outdoors as often as possible in the dark months not only fills up with fresh air, but also takes a light shower: this is particularly important during the short days. Because the darker the days are, the higher the proportion of the sleep hormone melatonin that is formed in the body. In contrast, the more you are exposed to daylight, the less melatonin is released and the fitter and in a better mood you spend the day. But this only really applies to daylight. Artificial light generally does not have this effect. That is why health experts recommend spending at least 30 minutes outdoors every day, ideally between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., because then the brightness is at its highest. So, time for a garden tour and for plant care!

There is no bad weather, only wrong clothes

If you work outside in the garden in cold and wet conditions, you should also dress accordingly. The onion look has proven itself: with several thin layers of clothing, you can best react to changing weather and your own needs. The bottom layer close to the body should be a shirt made of breathable material. On top of that comes a warming layer like a sweater, and on top of that a wind and water-impermeable, non-rubberized jacket. A hat or at least a broad headband protects your head and ears from rain and wind and weatherproof shoes ensure warm and dry feet. And after gardening - immediately get out of your sweaty clothes and take a shower! Afterwards you can enjoy your garden from the sofa with pride and relaxation. Farewell to winter depression!
