Video: Smart Home System Homematic IP

A smart home should bring more comfort and security into your own four walls. It is all the more important that the data traffic between smartphone and devices runs reliably and securely. The German manufacturer eQ3 entered the smart home market very early in 2007 and has since specialized in realizing a secure smart home. The result is the wireless smart home solution Homematic IP.
SmartHome beginners sometimes have respect for what the Homematic system can do. And they draw the wrong conclusion that it is hardly manageable for the layperson. The fact is: Homematic provides such a complete solution for networking our SmartHome that it can certainly keep up with the significantly more expensive KNX bus classic - and at an attractively lower price (not only as a wired solution, but also by radio). And the truth is: to get the most out of all the possibilities of the Homematic system, you may need an expert. Because more complex Homematic installations are no longer a simple matter, but require a thorough study of the manuals and a professionally planned installation of all individual applications. But it is also true: anyone can theoretically install the wireless retrofit solutions themselves and expand them step by step. Of course, it's not necessarily for people with two left hands. For example, you should think about the logical function of a heating control in a large house before starting.
Quality benchmark for other providers
The manufacturer, the “eQ-3 AG” in Leer, is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of SmartHome technology. After all, the radio standards of Qivicon and RWE have been developed, and many other manufacturers use Homematic technology (for networking radiator thermostats, fire and intrusion detectors) to build bridges from their own offerings to the Homematic world. The components of the East Frisians are very common in Germany and are sold through online retailers such as Conrad, ELV, Reichelt, Pollin and Cyberport. So if you choose a Homematic base, you will find a very large number of different components that meet all the requirements of a modern SmartHome: lighting control using dimmers and intelligent switches; Control of room temperature through programmable thermostats, also coupled with window and door sensors; Movement of blinds, shutters and awnings according to the weather. A large selection of sensors detects water damage, fires, gas escapes and even burglars that affect windows or in the front yard. Or open the garage door with a flasher and switch on the front door lighting.
Homematic IP: The idea of a (future) secure smart home
While there are certainly many smart home systems that are visually more appealing, you know exactly where you are at Homematic IP: The radio devices network via the current IPv6 protocol, which assigns each device a unique, unique identifier. This enables the control center to precisely identify and address each device. Information security during data exchange was checked and confirmed by the VDE in 2018.
Huge online community bakes the system
eQ3 guarantees the continuation of the Homematic IP series until at least 2030. However, it is unlikely that the manufacturer will miss the system. Because in the meantime a huge online community around Homematic IP has established itself, in which users provide each other with exciting tips and tricks. Homematic IP can be expanded much more flexibly and creatively compared to many younger systems. This is ensured, for example, by roller shutter actuators, light sensors and circuit boards. The latter make it possible to integrate ordinary electrical devices into the smart home.
Who is Homematic IP recommended for?
The Homematic IP Smart Home is interesting for the following target groups:
- Smart home beginners who attach particular importance to a smart home system with German data protection standards or who want to operate a purely local smart home system
- Advanced smart home fans and hobbyists who want to benefit from an active online community
- Users of the European smart home platform "Conrad Connect" (as an alternative to the American IFTTT)
Central control: CCU3 or access point
Most smart home systems only allow the smart home to be controlled via a control center that is connected to a cloud. Homematic IP offers the user two different options: operate the smart home purely locally or connect it to the manufacturer's cloud. So you have to choose from the outset either for the CCU3 (local operation) or the access point (cloud connection). We have summarized the advantages of the solutions in the table. In general, however, both control centers enable the automation of all Homematic and Homematic IP devices.

The brain of the system: Web UI or the Homematic IP app
If you choose the CCU3 as the heart of the Homematic IP system, the "Web UI" web interface serves as a platform for programming the smart home. Switching times can be clearly defined here and device links or device groups can be defined. For example, any wall switch can be assigned to a group of switch sockets.

Photo: eQ3
In principle, eQ3 does not provide app control via the CCU3 system. However, if you still want to address the Homematic IP system via an app, you have a number of third-party apps to choose from, for example:
iOS apps:
• @Home
• pocket control HM
• HomeControl
• homeNOW
• LiVo
Android apps:
• TinyMatic
• Home24
• homeNOW
Anyone who definitely wants to address their smart home on the go is better advised to use the access point as a control center. For the access point, eQ3 offers the native Homematic IP app, which is used to configure and control the smart home system. Thanks to the connection to the Homematic cloud, you can quickly preheat the apartment from work if you arrive home earlier than usual. Since the Homematic IP app is also compatible with Amazon Alexa, nothing stands in the way of voice control.
