The advantage of home remedies for mold: in contrast to special chemical-based cleaners, they do not cause any side effects in humans, are mostly environmentally friendly and can also be obtained inexpensively from the drugstore or pharmacy. Because mold in the apartment is not only unpleasant, it endangers health in the long run. The first warning signs are black, green or red mold stains (so-called mold spots) on the window frame and water stains on the wall or ceiling. Coupled with a musty smell, they signal that there is too much moisture in the room. First of all, there is no need to panic. If only small areas are affected, i.e. the infestation remains well below half a square meter, mold can be removed with simple household remedies that each of us have at home.

Which home remedies have proven effective against mold?

To use: Spray any house remedy for mold that we present to you afterwards or apply to the affected areas with a cloth or sponge. The exposure time is approximately 30 minutes. Then use paper towels to wipe the surfaces. Tip: wiping with yeast water reduces the formation of mold.

In the household, vinegar is a real all-rounder: it is also ideal for fighting mold.

The all-rounder vinegar is also suitable for combating mold on firm and smooth surfaces. There are several reasons for this: Vinegar has a low pH that the most common types of mold cannot withstand. In addition, the home remedy consists of no toxic ingredients. Unless: If you use highly concentrated vinegar essences, think about your health and wear protective clothing to avoid burns.

Good to know: Vinegar has no effect on calcareous substrates because lime neutralizes the acid. The vinegar loses its killing effect. The success is correspondingly short: mold will soon form again on the limestone walls treated with vinegar - mostly even more intensely than before.

Alcohol not only has a disinfectant effect, as a home remedy for mold it removes this water if it is used in at least 70 percent concentration. As a result, the mushrooms dry up.

When treated with alcohol there is basically no risk of burns or injury. But: alcohol is flammable. Open fire, even if it was only by candlelight, should not exist in the immediate vicinity. Ventilate the room thoroughly during and after use.

The only drawback of this home remedy: alcohol evaporates very quickly after application. For this reason, the measure must be carried out several times with alcohol in order to remove the mold permanently.

Methylated alcohol, i.e. denatured alcohol, has the same effect as alcohol as a home remedy for mold, but is a lot cheaper.

Hydrogen peroxide

The odorless solution of hydrogen and oxygen (H2O2) works wonders for mold. To do this, however, it must have at least five percent hydrogen peroxide. After application, it decomposes to water.

Note that the surface must be dry during treatment. To test, you can press blotting paper on the affected areas on the wall: If there are dark spots on the paper, the surface must first dry.

Warning: Hydrogen peroxide can bleach textiles under certain circumstances!

Safety notice

Even if you use home remedies for mold, you need at least a mouth and eye protection. Because molds contain spores that make their way through the air into our respiratory tract and mucous membranes. They can trigger allergies or permanently damage the liver and kidneys. During use, you should also protect yourself with rubber gloves from direct contact with the skin and thus from allergic skin reactions. It is also advisable to wear disposable overalls that prevent spores from getting caught in clothing. After the procedure, dispose of all the tools used, such as sponges and rags, so that the dangerous spores do not spread.

Common problem: mold in the bathroom

Mold always occurs where there is high humidity, preferably in the bathroom. In addition, we often forget to ventilate properly after showering. A closed shower cubicle or shower curtain promotes stagnant air: They offer mold the ideal way to thrive on the silicone joints of the shower wall.

In addition to the home remedies already mentioned, yeast dissolved in water is particularly effective for treating fungi in the grout between the tiles. Apply the mixture to the joints with a toothbrush and let it soak in for about ten minutes. The yeast can be wiped off with a cloth. You can repeat the process if necessary.

To prevent mold in the bathroom, you have to deprive it of the basis of life: regular, extensive ventilation improves the indoor climate. In addition, you should keep the shower cubicle dry and clear it of dust. The same applies to the shower curtain. It is best to clean this regularly in the washing machine. Tip: After showering, dry the bathroom fittings and the corners of the shower cabin with a cloth. You should also remove soap bars immediately after use. This is the only way that mold has no chance of settling down.

Home remedies only fight the mold superficially

Remember: all home remedies do not fight the origin of the mold, only the symptoms. For complete elimination, it is therefore important to clarify the causes of the affected areas and to remove them. If you heat or ventilate incorrectly and therefore have cold surfaces plus a humidity of 70 to 80 percent in the room, you will always be confronted with mold. The same applies to construction defects, for example poor insulation.

Do you always have to fight stubborn mushrooms? The advice of the Federal Environment Agency informs you in detail about "mold in the house". Large-scale infestation must be remedied by experts from building biology or building physics. You can find a competent company from your region on the Internet, for example through the Federal Association for the Improvement of Molds
