A note: Remember that the warranty usually expires if you open the washing machine while the warranty period is still running and carry out repairs yourself.

Change the V-belt

If the washing machine motor is running at full speed but the drum is not rotating, the V-belt is usually to blame. It is there to transfer the power of the motor to the washing drum. Especially with older devices, the V-belt - also known as the V-ribbed belt - can tear after many years of use or slip due to creeping wear. You can easily check whether this has happened by looking into the washing machine. To do this, open the rear wall of the machine to check the inside.

Replacing a V-belt is not difficult. Because the spare part is already available on the Internet for around 15 to 20 euros, you can easily save money by doing the repair yourself. When ordering, pay attention to the model and the year of construction of the washing machine - there are V-belts in all possible sizes and widths. Often you can also follow the printing on the old belt. Once the belt has come off, you should definitely replace it. Experience has shown that it is only a matter of time before this happens again.

Proceed as follows to replace the V-belt:

  1. Remember to first pull the power plug and disconnect the washing machine from the water supply.
  2. Remove the top cover and / or rear wall of the machine if the V-belt is not openly accessible
  3. If the V-belt has just broken off, it is sufficient to first pull it up again to end the washing cycle. As a precaution, however, order a spare strap straight away so that you will be prepared the next time.
  4. At first glance, a brand new fan belt may appear too short or too tight. If you use the right technology, it is still easy to wind up: First place the V-belt around the drive wheel, which is located directly on the motor shaft. Place the longitudinally ribbed V-belt around the drive wheel so that the ribs lie in the grooves of the wheel and the V-belt sits in the middle.
  5. Now pull the V-belt as far as possible over the significantly larger flywheel of the washing machine drum. It can help to temporarily fix the V-belt to the flywheel using cable ties so that it does not slip. Now turn the flywheel further by hand so that the V-belt is automatically drawn up. You then have to remove the cable ties with a side cutter or a knife - but be careful not to damage the V-belt.
  6. Now all you have to do is screw the back of your washing machine back on. Done!

Clean the fluff filter

It is best to clean the fluff filter every few weeks to months. This only takes a few minutes and can solve a variety of problems with the washing machine or prevent them early.

The task of the fluff filter is to pick up foreign objects from the washing drum. Who has never forgotten something in their pockets while washing clothes? Over time, coins, screws and other small parts collect in the fluff filter. And as the name suggests, fluff or lint also accumulates, which together with detergent residues can permanently clog and clog the fluff filter. If you wait too long to clean the fluff filter, this can lead to problems with the washing machine.

What happens if the fluff filter is clogged? As a result, the washing water may no longer be pumped out properly, the washing machine may no longer spin, it may not draw water, or it may no longer open. In addition, unpleasant smells can arise. At the latest when it smells from the washing machine or the laundry smells unpleasant, it is high time to clean the fluff filter.

  1. You can usually find the fluff filter in the lower area of the front of the washing machine. It is hidden behind a cover or a panel.
  2. Remove the lid to access the fluff filter. Use a suitable screwdriver or a small coin.
  3. Have a flat container ready. Residual water can escape when the fluff filter is opened. So be prepared for a gush of water to come towards you. Some washing machines also have a drain hose. You can catch the water with a rag.
  4. Remove the fluff filter. It usually takes a left turn to pull out the strainer.
  5. Clean the fluff filter under warm, running water. You can remove coarse dirt by hand. A drain strainer picks up the dirt and prevents it from clogging the drain.
  6. Use a brush or cloth to clean the lint filter thoroughly. Also think about the rubber seal. It also needs to be cleaned so that it seals well afterwards.
  7. Also clean the opening of the washing machine before reinserting the fluff filter.
  8. Now you can put the clean fluff filter back in the washing machine. If you previously unscrewed it, screw it back in the opposite direction and check that it is seated correctly.
  9. Your fluff filter is now nice and clean again! Remember to clean it regularly, preferably every few weeks. The more you thank it, the less dirt can accumulate.

Change the hose on the washing machine

Replacing a hose on the washing machine - you do that with the left. This can usually be done without opening the rear wall of the machine. Washing machines have an inlet hose and a waste water hose. Both can become porous and leaky over time due to material aging. Then it's time to replace the broken hose. If a puddle forms under the washing machine, first check whether the water smells of detergent and feels a bit soapy. In this case the process is leaky. If it is clear, odorless water, it comes from the inlet.

Replace inlet hose

The washing machine is supplied with fresh water via the inlet hose. Therefore, it is important that it works properly. If the inlet hose is defective, there is a risk of water damage. It is therefore best to check it regularly.

Modern hoses are equipped with an "aqua stop", sometimes "aqua stop". This function prevents water from escaping, but if the hose is defective, it must be replaced despite the leakage protection. When searching for the spare part, follow the operating instructions of the washing machine to find a suitable inlet hose. Also take into account the required length of the hose.

  1. Before removing the old hose: remember to turn off the water tap.
  2. Have a bucket or bowl ready - residual water runs out of the old hose.
  3. Now take the new inlet hose at hand and fasten the hose nuts or clamps to the connections. The connection on the outlet valve is usually straight, while the connection on the machine is often angled. The aqua stop is always near the tap.

Replace drain hose

The drain hose is used to drain the used water. If there are any defects in this hose or if it is blocked, it is time to replace it. This is somewhat more complex than with the inlet hose, because you usually have to open the washing machine:

  1. Most washing machines require you to first loosen a few screws and remove the top cover or back panel.
  2. Now you have to disconnect the drain hose from the drain pump. It is best to loosen the metal clamp with pliers and pull the hose off the pump.
  3. Pull the waste water drain hose out of the machine through the rear wall.
  4. Now insert the new sewage hose. First put it on the pump and fix it firmly with the clamp. If you rub the inside of the nozzle with a little petroleum jelly, it will be easier to slide over the nozzle.
  5. Pull the drain hose through the back of the washing machine and then replace the washing machine cover.
  6. Now reattach the hose to the sewage pipe as you originally attached it. The sewage hose is often connected to the drain of a sink via a side connection. So that it does not slip, it is fixed well with a hose clamp. If the old one was in poor condition, it is best to replace it, because a tight fit is extremely important - after all, you don't want to risk water damage.
  7. In some cases, the drain hose is simply hung in a sink, bathtub or toilet with a hook-shaped end. In such cases, ensure that the hose cannot slip off.

Tip: Have the program switch repaired

If the program switching mechanism is broken on older machines, this is usually a total loss - at least if you ask the manufacturer's official customer service department to repair it. A new switch including installation often simply exceeds the current value of the washing machine. But even in such cases there is an inexpensive solution. Some experienced electronics engineers offer the repair of the program switches of various washing machine models for little money on the Internet.

The defect is usually triggered by a so-called cold solder joint on the board. The service providers measure the circuits and re-solder the affected area so that the cable is firmly seated again. In some cases, defective capacitors, resistors, or other electronic components are also replaced. You have to remove the program switch yourself, send it in and put it back in after the repair. Less talented tradesmen can usually do this easily because the component is easily accessible after opening the top cover. Important: Take a photo before dismantling - so you know exactly where you have to plug in which cable when installing.
