If the glass of your favorite red wine tips over or a sip goes wrong while pouring it out, you have to act quickly, because the longer the red wine stain dries, the greater the challenge of removing it again. You do not need any expensive special cleaning agents, but can easily stain the stain with simple household remedies. With these tips you can easily remove red wine stains.

Why are red wine stains so difficult to remove?

With the grease stains, red wine stains are among the most common, but also the most stubborn stains in clothing, but also on tablecloths, sofas or carpets. The biggest problem with red wine stains is the dark tannins contained in the wine. These quickly attach to the fabric and cannot be easily removed - especially if the stains are older. If you discover a new red wine stain, you should act quickly - similar to the fresh blood stain. It is particularly difficult to remove red wine stains from delicate textiles, since you absolutely have to adhere to the specified temperatures when washing.

Remove fresh red wine stains - the best tips

Cold water

Carefully dab the fresh stain with kitchen paper so that the moisture does not penetrate deeper into the textile fabric. Then wash the stain thoroughly under cold water until you can only see clear water. If you have a sofa, carpet, etc. that don't fit under the tap, you can use a bowl of cold water and a cloth to remove the stain by rubbing gently. All textiles that can be washed in the washing machine, such as curtains, should then be washed using the usual washing program.

Mineral water

A great tip to remove fresh red wine stains is mineral water. Because the carbonic acid can detach the red wine from the tissue. To do this, pour mineral water generously over the stain and then dab it off with a clean cloth, such as kitchen paper. Repeat this process until the stain is no longer visible. Caution: If possible, you should also follow a normal washing program here to completely remove the red wine stain.

milk

Another option is to soak the clothes in milk. The lactic acid contained has a decolourising effect and can therefore also dissolve the red wine stain. Good to know: Use this method only with white textiles, otherwise the color will be attacked too strongly.

salt

The most famous tip for fresh red wine stains: sprinkle salt on the fresh red wine stain until it is completely covered. This sucks the red wine out of the textiles and can then simply be knocked off or brushed off.

Dry shampoo

If you have found a stain on a particularly sensitive fabric, then you should use dry shampoo. Simply spray on, brush out and wash according to the wash label. You can even use it to remove red wine stains from silk or wool.

Remove already dried red wine stains from clothing

Have you discovered an older red wine stain where the tannins have already penetrated deep into the textile structure? Here, removing the stains is more difficult, but not impossible. Make absolutely sure which household remedies are suitable for which textiles, as they can also discolor the fabrics or attack them too strongly. You can get advice in our article Flecken-weg-ABC.

How to remove dried red wine stains from insensitive substances, such as cotton:

White wine

This actually works because white wine contains a high degree of acidity and can detach red wine from the fabric structure. Soak your garment with a cheap white wine for about half an hour and then wash it as usual with the washing machine. If you don't have a white wine on hand at the moment, you can also use sparkling wine to clean it.

laundry detergent

Another alternative is detergent dissolved in cold water, which you can also use to soak the red wine stain. However, you should extend the exposure time to over an hour so that the detergent can develop its full effect. Then it's time to go to the washing machine.

Bile soap

Gall soap is also very suitable for all fabric colors. Rub the red wine stain generously with gall soap and let it soak in for a good hour before washing the garment in the washing machine. This is how the gall soap can detach the red wine from the textile fibers.

Lemon juice

For white, insensitive textiles, you can also use lemon juice instead of gall soap. This is a good weapon against stains anyway - it also helps against rust stains and others. Make sure that you rinse the juice with cold, clear water before washing.

The acidity of the lemon juice also works wonders. Simply add a little juice to the stain and then rinse the whole thing with water.

In the case of silk and other delicate textiles, you can carefully wet the red wine stain with petroleum ether, let it take effect briefly and then wash it out. For wool, a paste made from cornstarch and cold water is recommended. After a contact time of around half an hour, you can wash out the wool fabric thoroughly.

Remove red wine stains that have already dried out from the carpet, wooden table or sofa

For many, a cozy glass of red wine on the sofa is the perfect way to end a wonderful evening. However, red wine stains quickly develop on surfaces that cannot simply be washed in the washing machine.

Shaving cream can remove red wine stains from carpets, sofas and wooden tables. Rub the shaving foam deeply with a brush and leave it on for an hour. The same applies here again: wash the affected areas with cold water.

Another tip: use colorless glass cleaner to remove the red wine stain from the carpet or sofa. This can be applied generously and rubbed off after an exposure time of around 20 minutes. Then wash the textile area as well.
