Alexa is funny and smart, but Alexa cannot make calls. Until now! With the Smart Speaker L800HX, Gigaset now offers a combination of Amazon Echo and a telephone, thus promising a coup for the smart home. Previously, Alexa could only make phone calls via Echo Connect. But how innovative and compatible is the Smart Speaker from Gigaset? We took a closer look at him.

L800HX brings together telephony and voice assistant

Controlling the Smart TV, listening to the latest news or making an appointment: The range of functions of the Amazon voice assistant Alexa has increased immeasurably in recent years. In the area of in-house telephony, however, the Californian smart home application is not very talkative. Integration of the telephony control is only possible by purchasing the DECT connector "Echo Connect", which must be connected to the home router by cable. With the L800 HX, Gigaset promises a more elegant solution.

According to the manufacturer, the compact WLAN loudspeaker offers extensive telephony functions in conjunction with full compatibility with the Alexa system. But as is so often the case when using third-party products, the L800HX also raises the question of how sophisticated the connectivity of the speaker really is. Are all functions of Alexa or the FRITZ! System fully usable or do you have to accept losses in terms of compatibility? Is the comfort gain so great that the purchase price, which is around 30 euros more expensive than the Echo Plus, is worth it? What about the sound quality and data security when using the WLAN speaker?

How does the Gigaset Smart Speaker L800HX work?

In contrast to the wired Amazon solution with additional connector, the L800HX offers a wireless and intuitive connection between Alexa control and DECT telephony. The speaker is set up using step-by-step instructions using the Gigaset app. After connecting the speaker to the home WLAN and any DECT base station or a DECT router (e.g. FRITZ! Box) and connecting it to an Alexa account, the speaker is ready for use.

Then calls can be accepted via voice control and the familiar Alexa functions can be used. The voice control eliminates typical telephone features such as keypads or displays. Since the WLAN loudspeaker also functions as a hands-free device, a separate handset is no longer required for making calls.

Gigaset Smart Speaker L800HX: the details

The development of innovations in the field of smart home and telephony is part of the core business of the German communications manufacturer Gigaset. It is therefore right to expect high quality standards from the L800HX. A closer look shows whether the smart speaker lives up to expectations.

  • External impression: With its cylindrical design and gray fabric cover, the L800HX is visually reminiscent of the Echo Plus from Amazon. The blue LED bar is also similar to the Amazon version. The design gives a timeless impression, the workmanship looks high quality.
  • Commissioning: With the step-by-step instructions via the Gigaset app (available for Android and iOS), setting up the smart speaker should not pose a major problem even for “laypersons”. The instructions included are also simple and understandable. In addition to the power cord, no other cable connections are necessary.
  • Sound: Although the L800HX is the first smart speaker from Gigaset, the speaker still has a good and mature sound. The highs and lows of the 3-inch speaker are balanced, but the maximum volume should be a bit louder. The L800HX is therefore not suitable for sound reinforcement at a house party. In contrast to many current WIFI speakers (like the Echos), the Smart Speaker from Gigaset does not have a multiroom function with which the same playlist can be played in several rooms. Stereo playback is also missing. Although this is not standard with the rivals from Amazon and Google, it can be achieved by using two synchronously operated speakers.
  • Telephony: Those who are used to hands-free telephony will also be able to arrange themselves well with the smart speaker. The solid sound quality of the speaker ensures good quality for incoming calls. Dictating the phone number is no longer necessary for outgoing calls thanks to the option of integrating contacts using the Alexa app. Instead of dictating the number, the name of the person to be called can be given directly via voice control (for example "Alexa, call Tina."). Everyone has to decide for themselves whether the transfer of all contacts to Amazon is desirable.

  • Voice control: The Smart Speaker has all the features of Alexa voice control. The only drawback: In contrast to the Amazon Echo, the Spotify streaming service cannot be controlled with the L800Hx. Only Amazon Music, Deezer and Tuneln are available. That will put off some people.
  • Connectivity: Anyone who buys a device that advertises combining the performance features of two products can expect full connectivity for both products. The L800HX smart speaker largely meets these expectations. In addition to the connection to the FRITZ! Box or a Telekom Speedport, the speaker can also be operated on any other common DECT router. However, the Eco Mode available for the FRITZ! Box to reduce the radiation power is not supported. Music playback via the FRITZ! App media, on the other hand, works without any problems. The Alexa functions are - with the exception of Spotify - fully usable. The control of other Alexa devices is basically possible with the L800HX, however, unlike the Amazon Echo, ZigBee is not supported.
  • Data protection: In terms of data protection, the L800HX standard is comparable to the standards of Amazon's Alexa voice assistants. Customers must therefore accept that audio recordings will be transmitted to Amazon when using the L800HX. Amazon itself promises a high level of security for the “listened to” data, but in the recent past the company has also drawn attention to itself through data breaches. The reading out of all telephone contacts by the Alexa app to use the voice-based caller selection can also be viewed critically in terms of data protection.
  • Additional features: The Smart Speaker offers a number of smart functions. For example, the LED ring lights up in different colors depending on the function mode, for example blue in voice control mode or green in telephony mode. Depending on the setting, the light ring lights up, flashes or rotates. Calls can also be forwarded to other internal DECT call partners using a voice command.
  • Offline use: With the help of five input buttons on the top, the smart speaker can also be used offline (i.e. without Alexa connection). Music playback is possible via cable (3.5 mm jack) as well as via Bluetooth and WLAN.
  • Price: In comparison to other WiFi speakers with Alexa connection, the price of 182.29 euros (current Amazon price) for the smart speaker appears to be relatively high, but considering that the integration of DECT telephony with the Amazon Echo System is only possible with the additional purchase of an Echo Connect (approx. 35 euros), the total price seems completely justified in view of the range of functions offered.

The Gigaset Smart Speaker L800HX in comparison

Even if the Gigaset Smart Speaker L800HX is so far the only WLAN speaker that has an integrated DECT integration, the question is whether this innovation is sufficient for the current top dogs, Google Home and Amazon Echo 2 or Amazon Echo Leaving Plus 2 behind, especially since DECT integration is also possible in the Amazon system. A comparison shows the advantages and disadvantages of the Gigaset innovation.

Conclusion: Gigaset Smart Speaker L800HX is a good 2-in-1 device

With the Smart Speaker L800HX, Gigaset successfully connects Alexa voice control and DECT telephony. The simple setup and the wireless DECT integration are a real plus of the WLAN loudspeaker. On the whole, no lazy compromises need to be made when it comes to connectivity. Music fans are likely to miss the lack of Spotify voice control.

Thanks to the good sound and the good workmanship, the L800HX need not shy away from comparison with the market leaders from Google and Amazon. Only with the multi-room function is there a need to catch up. Whether the speaker actually replaces a classic DECT handset or is integrated into the existing DECT system as an additional hands-free phone remains a matter of personal taste.
