Season 7

At the beginning of March 2020, season 7 of "The Lion's Den" started. Some exciting ideas for the home also went into the show for a deal with the investors.

Cave of the Lions Product for houseplants: Lazy Leaf

Whether you have a black thumb or are away for weeks - optimal care for indoor plants is not always possible. Irrigation systems for houseplants are not a new solution. But engineer and hobbyist Georg Pröpper invented a model that can do more than other previously available versions without an app. His lazy leaf, which he presented in the lion's den, pours the plants over a mini hose that is located directly above the earth. The highlight: how much water should come out, you set yourself. There are ten levels to choose from. A room temperature sensor ensures that more is poured in the heat. The battery and water are sufficient for 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the set level. If the water or the battery is slowly empty, a warning tone indicates - but not at night, this is ensured by a daylight sensor.

Investor Ralf Dümmel was quickly on fire for the product. Before one of the other lions could make an offer or get out, he offered the founder a deal - and he immediately agreed.

The Lion's Den product is available in two sizes: small for pots up to 13 centimeters in diameter with a maximum fill capacity of 1.1 liters and large for pots up to 27.5 centimeters in diameter with 6.3 liters Water capacity.

What do the first customers and testers say about the Lazy Leaf? They praise the easy handling and the reliable function - even in the case of a long absence. It is criticized that the pouring interval is not adjustable. The lazy leaf pours daily, then only a minimal amount for plants such as cactus. Not practical: You have to find out yourself which level is suitable for your own houseplants. At one customer two out of four pots were defective, at another the cave of the lions product arrived wet. However, these seem to be exceptions, as the other customers report in their reviews that the lazy leaf works perfectly.

Lion's Den Product for securing ladders: LeiKoSi

“According to statistics, around 180, 000 conductor accidents occur annually in Germany alone. That means a ladder accident occurs every three minutes,”explains master roofer Udo Heyl during his presentation in the Lion's Den. He knows what he is talking about because he himself fell off a ladder at work and ended up in the hospital with a concussion for a week. This motivated him to invent his LeiKoSi product - a head protection. The stainless steel device can be attached to a ladder. Then you hang it in the gutter or on a window sill, for example. You can do that from the ground. You do not have to - like other products of this type - first climb the ladder unsecured to the point where you want to hang the device. The safety device ensures that the ladder cannot slide sideways or backwards. It is manufactured in accordance with the standard DIN EN131 / 1 and therefore suitable for all common conductors. Promising: The Lion Cave product has been tested by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).

All lions praised the helpful invention. However, there was no deal. The conductor head protection was too expensive for investors with over 200 euros for private individuals, they found the offer of the founder - 250, 000 euros for 10 percent company shares - too high. Lion Georg Kofler offered 250, 000 euros for 30 percent, but the inventive roofer did not want to get involved.

And what do previous customers say? They praise the easy and versatile use of the LeiKoSi and find it safe. Experts are also impressed by the Lion's Den product. In 2019 it was awarded the Federal Prize for outstanding innovative services for handicrafts by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The reason: "The ladder head protection makes a significant contribution to occupational safety." The award is presented annually at the international craft fair.

Cave of the Lions Picture hanging product: flexylot

Are the pictures painstakingly attached to the wall hanging wrong? And the house blessing with it? Alexander Schophoff, who runs a gallery, knew the problem - and invented a solution: the flexylot. This holder for pictures can be moved horizontally, vertically and diagonally after being fixed to the wall with a screw. Thus, crooked pictures should hang straight with just one hand, distances between several frames on the wall can be reduced or enlarged in no time. Investor Ralf Dümmel was so enthusiastic about the humorous presentation of the founder and his idea that it couldn't go fast enough to secure a deal. After two of his Löwen colleagues got out, he stopped the other two from speaking - and won over the founder.

The first customer opinions on the product are euphoric. It is easy to use and just right for anyone who has little talent for proper drilling or thorough measurement. Even large pictures can be hung up quickly and easily. In mid April 2020, an adhesive variant of the flexylot is to follow, with which drilling is no longer necessary. However, this carries a maximum of 3 kilogram picture frames. The drilling variant for small and medium-sized images can handle up to 7.5 kilograms. The one for large and heavy framed paintings and photos holds up to 12 kilograms.

Cave of the Lions product against rust stains: RostDelete

Removing rust - this is not only possible with aggressive chemicals, auto mechanic Robert Lehmkuhl is certain of that. He developed RostDelete, an environmentally and material-friendly agent that only dissolves corrosion and not the material underneath. It is suitable for chrome, stainless steel and paint. The orange paste has to take effect for 6 to 24 hours, depending on how stubborn the stains are. Then you can wash them off - and the grate - with a sponge and water.

In season 4, Ralf Dümmel was already investing in Rostschreck, a rod for the dishwasher that is supposed to prevent rust on cutlery and pots.

In the first episode of season 7, DHDL also inspired the lion at RostDelete to spread the product in retail. Did he look at the list of ingredients? Because RostDelete simply consists of citric acid, wood flour, stabilizers and preservatives. Around 20 euros per kilogram seem to be quite expensive. The pasty consistency is helpful, however, according to testers, because the agent does not drip when applied to hanging objects.

And does the product serve its purpose? The opinions differ. Some customers only give one star, say that the product does nothing at all - others are enthusiastic. Test reports indicate that the correct exposure time and application are very important. Several attempts may be necessary. Before and after pictures by independent testers show that the product, when used correctly, can produce very good results.

Season 6

In season 6 of 2019, relatively few products appeared for the home, but all four ideas convinced investor Ralf Dümmel to make a deal. The lion is known for placing the products in retail stores nationwide. But did they also sell themselves?

Cave of the Lions product for burglary protection: the shadow simulator home shadows

If potential burglars see that there is light on in an apartment or house and someone is moving in the room, they will not break in - this is the basic idea behind the lion den product homeshadows. The shadow simulator automatically turns on its light in auto mode at dusk. Then he casts varying shadows on a wall or on the screen of a window. The shadows move according to an algorithm that mimics real movements without a recurring pattern.

The inventors found an enthusiastic investor in Ralf Dümmel. However, the opinions of the users differ widely: some consider the light to be unnaturally glaring and the shadows to be barely visible, others find both to be appropriate. According to a customer, the light looks a bit more natural in the direction of a wall instead of a window. Some also note that the device gets very warm when it is plugged in when it runs in auto mode for five to seven hours at a time.

The question still remains: Is the shadow simulator really suitable as burglary protection? One can only speculate about this, because there is no study or the like. The inventors of the product note on their homepage themselves: “Home shadows simulate the presence of people through moving shadows and can thus deter burglars who avoid inhabited houses. However, professional burglars are unlikely to be deterred by alarm systems or other preventive measures.”

Cave of the Lions Kitchen product: Easy Pan

The Easy Pan pan has a swivel wall that is designed to ensure that food swung in the pan stays in place instead of flying through the kitchen. Tilting the dish from the pan onto a plate should also be possible without spillage.

Investor Ralf Dümmel was convinced after only a few minutes, and with the inventors of the Easy Pan concluded the fastest deal to date that has ever existed in the Lion's Den. Are the users as enthusiastic as the lion? As for panning, yes. However, the cheap product has to accept a lot of criticism in terms of quality: poor coating, rust stains, uneven floor, which is why the food burns. This could be due to the fact that this DHDL product sold worse in the weeks after the broadcast than most of the others in which Ralf Dümmel invested in season 6.

Cave of the Lions DIY product: Drillstamp

Drilling a perfect hole, especially in the right place, if you want to attach a picture, a mirror, a lamp or a shelf is not that easy. At best, you should be two and have to measure thoroughly. This effort should be eliminated with the lion's den product drill stamp: You attach the mini device with rubber knobs, a locking wheel or glue point to the object you want to hang up. Then you hold it at the desired position on the wall and press it lightly against it. A pen mounted in the drill stamp leaves a small mark on the wallpaper. At this point you should drill.

As with many everyday products, investor Ralf Dümmel also struck here. In terms of sales, the product has to line up behind many others from the Lion's Den, but a large majority of users are convinced. Some say the application requires some practice, but most get along really well and praise the practical helper. However, the invention is not sustainable because the plastic product can only be used as long as the pen contains ink.

Cave of the Lions Household product: Protect Pads

A couple from Luxembourg developed the Protect Pads so that the vacuum cleaner does not leave scratches on furniture, cupboards, baseboards and doors. This cave of the lions product is a self-adhesive, cutable shock protection pad that can be attached to the vacuum cleaner, vacuum robot or cordless vacuum cleaner. The invention sold the second worst of all 13 products in which Ralf Dümmel invested in season 6 of DHDL. The users find that the idea serves its purpose, but the adhesive does not hold well.

Season 5

Season 5 2018 saw significantly more products for the house in the lion's den - also an interesting one for the garden. There was a deal for all ideas, but one of them burst afterwards.

Cave of the Lions Garden product: Ruwi Multi-Rake

The oldest founder of the Lion Cave so far, 80-year-old Rudolf Wild, knows what disturbs many gardeners: that you have to bend down constantly, which causes back pain and requires so many different devices. That is why he invented a garden rake that can be used to weed as well as loosen the soil, clear the undergrowth, dig planting holes, level beds, press on soil, draw planting troughs and clean joints and edges.

The founder convinced Lion Ralf Dümmel and secured a deal. The product sold better than many others. Just a few months after the show, sales of over two million euros were achieved. There is little criticism. Only that the assembly of the individual parts is unnecessarily complicated and the rake is not suitable for plants with a thin stem. The invention records top ratings almost exclusively in numerous shops. Many have found their new favorite garden tool in it.

Cave of the Lions bathroom and kitchen product: Fugentorpedo

With the joint torpedo, dirty joints are a thing of the past. First you remove lime and dirt with a diamond grinding board. However, this can only be done once, otherwise too much cement will be lost. Then you change the grinder to a brush and clean the joints as usual with cleaning agent. The third component of the joint torpedo set is an impregnation pen, which is intended to protect the joints from future contamination.

Ralf Dümmel invested. With four million sales in a few months after the broadcast, the Fugentorpedo is a particularly successful den of the lions product. The result thrilled the majority: the joints looked like new. However, many users complain about the quality of the apparently short-lived product. The joint torpedo does not seem to be fully able to withstand very heavy dirt and mold in the bathroom.

Cave of the Lions DIY product: flash cover

It should be the perfect choice for masking off light switches and the like when painting walls: the cover flash. The self-adhesive protective fleece is advertised as self-adhesive, tear-resistant, water-resistant, removable without residue and reusable. A dispute arose in the lion's den about whether such a product already existed. Ralf Dümmel was not deterred and invested - with success. The top flash achieved 2.5 million sales within a few months. The majority of users are disappointed. The fleece holds bad and still leaves adhesive residue.

Cave of the Lions vacuum cleaner product: catch up

Student Tobias Gerbracht's idea was born when his grandmother sucked in an earring and he had to cut open the vacuum cleaner bag and ransack it. Whether jewelry, money or Lego bricks - these should no longer make it into the dirty bag. Gerbracht invented the Catch Up small parts filter, which can be mounted between the handle and suction pipe of a vacuum cleaner and collects earrings and the like in a container.

Ralf Dümmel was enthusiastic about the young man's ingenuity and invested. Together, they generated sales of two million euros in the months immediately after the show. Many customers are disappointed - their catch-up broke after a short time. It is only suitable for vacuum cleaner pipes from 31 to 35 millimeters. Users name many common vacuum cleaner models that they don't fit on. However, the majority are satisfied with the fall rate. For some customers, however, there were blockages in the catchup grille or in the vacuum cleaner pipe.

Cave of the Lions wardrobe product: Capsair

Hangers with integrated protection against clothes moths in the form of a capsule filled with lavender or cedar wood - that is the idea behind Capsair. Löwe Ralf Dümmel was convinced to invest, but preferred to produce cheap plastic hangers instead of high-quality wooden hangers. The turnover of around one million euros in the months after DHDL was broadcast is below average for Ralf Dümmel. The majority of users are disappointed: Lavender trickles out of the capsules, the scent is too weak, the temples are not stable. How effective Capsair is actually against moths remains unclear.

Cave of the Lions Product for bad craftsmen: pazls furniture

Screwing, doweling, building for hours? For all those who want to avoid it, three school friends invented furniture that can be assembled quickly and without tools thanks to the magnetic click system. How the piece of furniture should look like can be individually configured on the founders' website. You can also extend and convert the furniture, for example from a lowboard to a sideboard.

The founders enthused investor Frank Thelen to a deal, but it broke afterwards. The market was too competitive for the lion. According to some users, the delivery time is very long. What is surprisingly quick, however, is the construction of the furniture. The high price is justified because of the quality. The innovative pieces of furniture can only be obtained from the pazls online shop.

Lion's Den product for bedding: dry fix

No dryer, a small apartment - where to put freshly washed bed linen? To solve this problem, Andreas Plath invented the Trockenfix, a spiral hanger on which the bed linen can be pulled. The product promises a drying time that is 66 percent shorter because the fabric does not stick together. You can hang the bracket on door frames, in the shower cubicle or on the ceiling with an enclosed hook.

Ralf Dümmel was convinced that the idea solved a widespread problem and invested. The lion and the founder were able to generate two million euros in sales in the months after the show. The majority of users confirm the shortened drying time and are happy about the opportunity to finally be able to hang up bedding to save space. However, there is criticism for the quality. The hook is not stable, the supplied bracket cannot be mounted on many.

Cave of the Lions product for parents: Flippo Kids

A children's chair that is adjustable in height, can be converted into a bench and a learning tower - this idea was presented by Alexander Haunhorst, father of a little boy, in the lion's den. The Flippo One high chair can be assembled and converted without tools using a simple plug-in system. Investor Dagmar Wöhrl took a bite, but customers didn't. The lioness said in an interview that the product had not been accepted by the end user. The jury of the "German Innovation Award", however, convinced the inventor with his idea. He won the award in 2019 in the category "Excellence in Business to Consumer - Kids & Toys". Testers praise how stable and well-made the piece of furniture is. It is also very easy and quick to assemble and convert. The only thing that bothered a tester was that the chair couldn't be pushed under the table. The Flippo One high chair is only available in the online shop of Flippo Kids.
