The kitchen today is much more than just a place to cook. In the past few years, the kitchen has changed like no other room. It is the room where enjoyment and conviviality come together. When friends and family swing the wooden spoon together and enjoy the get-together, it quickly becomes a kitchen. You will spend a lot of time in this room - a good reason to plan the room carefully, whether for a new building or a kitchen remodeling. We give you tips on how to use little space skillfully, which work surfaces you can work with comfortably and which equipment and lights are needed in the kitchen.

Kitchen planning: 1. Measure the kitchen exactly

According to the recommendations of the kitchen manufacturers, a four-person household requires around seven square meters of space for kitchen cabinets and electrical appliances. Plan short distances in the kitchen and consider how many people are there. Transfer all wall dimensions and the connections for water, electricity (and possibly for gas) onto graph paper in 1:20 scale - then one meter in your kitchen corresponds to five centimeters on paper. If you are measuring an unfinished building: Enter in the plan how thick the plaster and tiles are to be applied and how high the finished floor will be.

a) Check wall dimensions

Compare the dimensions of opposite walls: you do not need to consider differences of up to two centimeters. A bigger difference indicates that at least one corner of the room is not rectangular - measure the angles so that the worktop fits exactly. Check the ceiling height per wall at three points and note the highest and lowest point. Important centimeters for tall units can be missing here. Also make sure in advance that your wall material can hold the heavily loaded wall cabinets.

b) Take advantage of heights

You can get by with less space if you compensate for tightness by height. Extra high wall units and tall units hold more than usual sizes. 35 cm deep shelves and top cabinets for the worktop fit into the niche between the base and wall unit. Avoid placing a tall cabinet next to the window, otherwise it would slow down the light.

c) Fill in depths

A depth of 60 centimeters is the norm for base cabinets and devices. Pentagonal cupboards for the corner and furniture with bulbous fronts offer considerably more storage space.

If you want to set up a small kitchen, you should save space by sensible arrangement. The ideal workflow arranges the furniture: preparation, cooking, washing up. In this order you set up the kitchen optimally and save ways.

Row the furniture for right-handed people from right to left, for left-handed people the other way around: Start with a shelf at least 30 centimeters wide and place the stove next to it. Set up 60 to 90 square centimeters of work space on the other side of the stove. Then you can install a kitchen sink and dishwasher. To place clean dishes, you need another 120 square centimeters of space.

  • Mini kitchen: Place the furniture and appliances on a wall in a narrow space. To save space, you should choose a sink with only one basin and a maximum of 45 centimeters narrow appliances.
  • Kitchen up to 10 square meters: If the room is at least 2.40 meters wide, place the furniture in two lines - the functional furniture such as the refrigerator, dishwasher and stove on one wall and the storage furniture opposite.
  • Kitchen around 12 square meters: The cheapest are rooms with a length of around four meters and a width of three meters - then you can put the kitchen in a U-shape. Use the corners for the stove and sink (or for base cabinets with a pot carousel) and the window seat for working.

Furniture tip: 3. Ergonomics in the kitchen

Large work surfaces make handling in the kitchen easier. The dimensions of furniture and the ease of use of devices should suit the user, not the other way around. Experts call the adaptation of objects to human movements ergonomics. In an ergonomic kitchen, you protect your back and joints, work safer and more comfortably and tire less.

Change your work posture frequently and plan a place where you can also work while sitting. Only store heavy objects below your shoulder height - otherwise the weight puts too much strain on your back. It is best to plan both the oven and the refrigerator at eye level in your kitchen.

There are various materials that can be used as a kitchen worktop. Choose the best materials according to your taste and budget and plan them into the overall concept of your kitchen:

  • Tiles are heat-resistant and easy to clean, but dirt often sticks in the joints.
  • HPL boards: Particle boards with laminate are easy to clean and acid-proof, but heat and cuts can be harmful.
  • Stainless steel: rust-free, hygienic, maintenance-intensive. However, sensitive people should get tested for chrome nickel allergy before buying.
  • Artificial stone (Corian, Varicor, Marlan): tolerates heat, acid, cuts and is also easy to clean.
  • Natural stone: heat and cut resistant (knives become blunt), but acid and fat stain.
  • Wood: beech is robust, maple is softer and patina cannot be avoided.

The material names for wood are subject to standards:

  • Solid wood means: Except for the rear wall and drawers, all parts are made of wood.
  • Real wood: solid wood parts on chipboard.
  • Veneer: visible surfaces coated with precious wood, including cheaper wood.
  • Replica: A wooden pattern is printed on plastic, furniture made of chipboard is glued to it.

a) Range hoods to match the style

Opening windows - you don't like doing that in wind, winter air and noise. Extractor hoods ventilate at the push of a button. Flat screens slide out on telescopic rails under the top cabinet (storage space above the fume cupboard), hoods made of copper, stainless steel and glass make the room striking. A conventional extractor hood is mounted on a straight wall or suspended from the ceiling. The extractor hood also fits under the slope. Screw it onto the rafters, it can be covered with perforated metal. Insulate the exhaust pipe well so that there is no thermal bridge.

In the case of recirculation hoods, fans draw in the air above the stove, pass it through filters and thus trap grease and odors. The cleaned air is blown back into the kitchen. Ask about the material of the filter mats, some of them can detach fibers. Metal filters do not give off particles, they are cleaned in the dishwasher.

Exhaust hoods work more effectively, because vapor and steam are transported outside through an air shaft to the roof or through an opening in the outer wall. A cap protects the exhaust pipe from rain.

The faster the motor moves vapors, the louder it works and the air whistles - do not calculate the deduction too large. A quick change of room air per hour is enough for quick-fried dishes. Rule of thumb for the performance of the fan: the volume of the kitchen (cubic meters) times twelve.

b) Rinse cleverly

The kitchen sink should be placed high enough to reach the pool floor in an upright position with a flat hand. Align the height of the worktop with the person who works most frequently in the kitchen. Place the dishwasher and basin together so that you can place pre-washed pots in the machine without dripping marks.

A stainless steel sink is easy to clean and hygienic. Sensitive people should, however, have an allergy test done, because stainless steel contains about 20 percent chromium and ten percent nickel. The material is resistant to acids, bases, heat and does not rust. The non-porous surface can be hygienically cleaned with water and a sponge. You can remove stubborn stains with detergent, and you can keep them shiny with stainless steel.

Enamelled steel sinks are inexpensive. The surface survives the rapid change from hot (up to 230 degrees Celsius) and cold without damage. The smaller and denser the pores, the less dirt can get inside. You can clean the sink with an all-purpose cleaner.

c) The right stove for your needs

Kitchen planning: 6. Around the dining table

Almost three quarters of all families eat one meal a day in the kitchen. All family members and at least two guests should be seated at the dining table. Therefore, you should plan enough space in the kitchen here.

a) Table size

Allow per person for the place setting from plates, cutlery and glass with a table surface of 65 cm wide and 45 cm deep. A square dining table for six people should be at least 80 x 130 cm in size and a round table at least 125 cm in diameter. A rectangular table with an edge length of 80 cm or a round table with a diameter of 90 cm is sufficient for four people.

b) seat height

Check whether the table and chairs match in height. If the difference between chair surface and table top is less than 26 or more than 30 cm, you sit uncomfortably. A distance of 28 cm is considered ideal. You should build a dining counter at least 70 cm high if you want to sit on it in normal chairs. Equip a counter at a working height of 90 cm with bar stools or build a 20 cm high platform for the chairs.

c) footprint

Each chair needs a 45 cm wide and 50 cm deep footprint. Leave a distance of 20 cm from seat to seat, so that all table neighbors enjoy enough elbow room when eating. A square dining table with six seats takes up 2.80 x 2.40 m of space, a round table with six chairs takes up 2.50 x 2.50 m of space. It is best to install a pendant lamp with a height-adjustable cable about 60 centimeters above the center of the table. And choose the lampshade so large that it completely illuminates the table surface without dazzling. The screen should be white on the inside, so it does not swallow light and does not tint the food. With a light dimmer, you can continuously adjust the light intensity and thus provide soft light for sensitive eyes or at a romantic dinner.

Setup tip: 8. Protect children and cook more calmly

The kitchen is the most dangerous room in the house for small children. In addition to your caution, plan to install child locks in your kitchen, thereby reducing the risk of dangers.

  • Beware of the stove: keep pot sugar from the hot contents: use the rear hotplates and turn the pan handles to the wall. Little fingers cannot turn on stove knobs to fold away - nor can switches on the top of the worktop or in the wall unit. Secure the hob with a grate that stops pots from falling.
  • Hot steam from the dishwasher: If you open it during operation, hot water vapor will spill out. To prevent children from scalding, you can mount a lockable latch on older machines. New models with the GS mark (tested safety) lock automatically.
  • Be sure to lock away dangerous electrical devices: blenders, slicers or toasters can be weapons. Here you have to be careful during operation and lock the devices away during breaks and after use.
  • Store aggressive cleaning agents locked: You should always store eco-cleaners as well as aggressive household chemicals in locked cupboards. Locks can also be retrofitted.
  • Store shopping and plastic bags safely: children can suffocate if they put a plastic bag over their heads as a mask. Therefore, they should be kept in the top cabinet compartment.
