Sociable, communicative, lively - the kitchen-living room has what it takes to be a favorite room. The best parties take place here, they cook, eat or drink a glass of wine together. This is how you plan your dream kitchen, in which you also like to be between meals.

As natural as it sounds: Before you start furnishing your kitchen, you should familiarize yourself with the room situation and clarify your needs. Do you need a lot of space for preparation, storage and cooking or should a long table be the focus because you like to entertain guests?

The choice of kitchen shape is more than a matter of taste. The floor plan and the size of the room specify the dimensions here:

  • Single-line eat-in kitchens are ideal for smaller spaces and when you need little work space. Because all devices and cupboards are lined up in a row, there is more space for the dining table. In order to accommodate as much as possible, high wall units are the best choice.
  • With a two-line arrangement, one of the opposite lines can be used as a cooking island and visually separate the cooking and dining areas. It automatically offers more storage space, work surface and, thanks to short distances, particularly efficient work.
  • The L-shape can be realized in almost every kitchen. Here there are two kitchen rows on adjoining walls. The resulting 90-degree angle can be used very well with rotating carousels or corner sinks and offers the ideal frame for the dining table.
  • Three adjoining kitchen lines form the so-called U-kitchen, it offers plenty of space for cooking and plenty of storage space. In the open kitchen, a shorter line extends freely into the room and often serves as a counter or dining area. If the U-kitchen has an additional short row of base units, this is known as the G-shape.

Important: For all types of kitchens, the priority for a smooth process is that the paths between the dining table and work surfaces remain free.

In this way, the eat-in kitchen remains tidy

Always be prepared for a visit: In order to create a welcoming atmosphere, the kitchen should always be tidy and clean. And what could help better than a lot of closed storage space, behind the doors of which pots, pans, kitchen utensils, food and dishes disappear unnoticed. So make the best use of the available space down to the last corner with cupboards, drawers, pull-out drawers and rotating carousels.

In addition, a group of open shelves can underline the cozy character of your dream kitchen. Pretty storage boxes, cups or glasses, which are ideally used every day, have a decorative appearance here.

Less is much more on the work surfaces. Only things have to be found here that are used every day. Discard anything that you haven't used for a year or more, that doesn't fit, or is damaged. Devices that are hardly used are best placed in the basement or storage room.

The following rule has priority in an eat-in kitchen: Order must be! Lots of storage space helps to keep the living area clean.

Room for table discussions

The centerpiece of the kitchen is of course a cozy dining table. It stands for the homely part and is mostly the center of family life. Its dimensions are primarily based on the available space. After that, it is crucial how many people should sit here regularly. A space requirement of around 70 centimeters is expected per head.

As a counterpoint to the modern high-tech kitchen, a wooden table charmingly loosens up the kitchen. If there is enough space, the table can be generous; if there is limited space, a pull-out model is a practical alternative. Round and rectangular models promote communication because everyone can look everyone in the eye.

Comfortable chairs or even armchairs are the be-all and end-all in the kitchen-cum-living room for long conversations and cozy coffee breaks, because the more comfortable the seat, the better the guests stay. A chair mix of different models, shapes and colors appears informal and lively. The good old kitchen bench in the modern kitchen is also welcome in the kitchen: it takes up less space than individual chairs when there is more space - and when one guest comes in, you just move a little closer together. In some living kitchens there is even space for a couch. As a rule of thumb for the selection, the height between the bottom edge of the table and the seat should not be less than 20 centimeters. The carpet under the table visually summarizes the dining area and also improves the room acoustics.

The living room kitchen in the right light

Because work and pleasure meet, the lighting in the kitchen is a little challenge. In addition to the basic lighting on the ceiling, targeted work light above the kitchen worktop and stove, you need atmospheric lighting above the dining area. So that the light can unfold its effect over the entire surface, the lighting should correspond in size and shape to the table. So that nothing dazzles and the view of the table neighbor is clear, the distance between the hanging lamp and table top should be around 60 centimeters.

Stay flexible with a wide range of activities, from eating to doing homework to game night, with height-adjustable lights that can be dimmed. This means that you can immediately create the desired lighting moods at the push of a button. So that the contrast to the surroundings does not become too strong, you need at least one other lamp as an opponent. Homely islands of light from floor or table lamps as well as indirect light from wall lights round off the lighting in the kitchen.

Technology that inspires in the kitchen

Since strong food smells and loud electrical noises are particularly annoying in the kitchen, it is worth investing in a powerful extractor hood and quiet kitchen appliances such as a dishwasher and a refrigerator. If you are bothered by a bulky extractor hood in the room, you are well advised to use a hob fan or hob with an integrated extractor hood. Instead of unmistakable over the stove, the technology of the cooktop extractor sinks into the base cabinet - which means you only lose some storage space.

Another advantage: They eliminate odors directly where they arise, so that they do not even rise. As a result, far fewer grease and odor particles spread in the kitchen - as well as in your furniture and textiles.
