A U-shaped kitchen is a real space miracle, which is particularly effective in large rooms and with an open construction. This type of kitchen is the ideal meeting place to cook with family or friends and offers plenty of storage space when properly divided. Kitchen drains can thus be designed to flow and the work surfaces offer space to cook with several people.

U-shaped kitchen - what is it?

The U-shaped kitchen usually consists of three adjoining kitchen rows that offer plenty of storage space and work space. They can have different lengths and give the kitchen shape its name, as they are arranged in a U-shape. Mostly one of the kitchen rows is free in the room. Whether as a bar, integrated kitchen island or dining area - think about which of the many design options best suits your dream kitchen.

To have the most pleasant feeling of space, when planning your U-shaped kitchen, make sure that tall cabinets or wall cabinets are only attached to one of the three sides. Otherwise, the resulting storage space can quickly become overwhelming and visually reduce the overall space. Good to know: When planning your kitchen, put special emphasis on the corner cabinets. You can gain lots of storage space here.

Cooling, cooking, rinsing: the magic triangle

From the refrigerator to the work surface, from the work surface to the stove, from the stove to the table or to the sink: these are the paths that matter in the kitchen. To make kitchen work particularly easy, you should make sure when planning that you adapt the individual kitchen areas to the work steps. In the U-shaped kitchen, this means designing the three main areas of the refrigerator, stove and sink according to the so-called “magic triangle” so that the walking distances are not too long. In a U-shaped kitchen, the stove, sink and refrigerator are grouped around you.

A good kitchen structure is important because it makes cooking easier. You shorten your commute, which saves a lot of time. Even in demanding situations such as cooking for guests or preparing a multi-course menu, you have everything at hand.

Since the size of the room and the layout of the kitchen always differ, the triangle is different in every kitchen. However, it can be helpful for you as a basic shape and can be used when designing the U-shape. Basically: Make sure that the cooling units are not directly next to the cooking area. Otherwise you will use up an unnecessary amount of energy.

Ergonomic work in the U-shaped kitchen

Ergonomics should also not be neglected in the kitchen in a U-shape: right-handed people work most ergonomically from left to right, i.e. clockwise, while left-handed people do the opposite. If you take this into account when planning the kitchen, this will make your work easier and create order, even when things get really high on the stove.

Also adapt the work surfaces to your height so that there are ergonomically optimal conditions when preparing, cooking or washing up. As a rule of thumb, if the arm is angled, there should be a distance of 10 to 20 centimeters between the elbow and the respective work area.

Whether dishwasher, oven or built-in coffee machine: Today, all built-in devices are arranged at an ergonomically sensible height. This not only makes work easier, but also noticeably protects your back. Plan all built-in devices so that you can work upright with your arms bent without having to bend your back.

Requirements and tips for planning

For a well-functioning U-shaped kitchen, the room should be large enough that the interior of the kitchen is at least two meters wide. So you can easily open drawers and cabinet doors. The generous, open shape is particularly effective in large rooms or living rooms.

So that the U-shaped kitchen does not look too bulky, there is a simple trick: Use floating kitchen cabinets as an interruption. This makes the kitchen look lighter and more modern. If you plan the kitchen sink in front of the window, this is the best way to use daylight. Direct access from the front door or the garage makes it easier to store weekend purchases.

The advantages of a U-shaped kitchen:

  • The U-shape offers maximum work surfaces, plenty of space for cooking and optimal storage space.
  • Whether family or friends - cooking with several people is fun here.
  • Enough space for non-built-in kitchen appliances such as a coffee machine etc.

The disadvantages of a U-shaped kitchen:

  • A dining area or a counter can only be integrated with an open floor plan.
  • The U-shape is not suitable for rooms with multiple doors.
  • A U-shaped kitchen does not fit into small spaces.
