Which desk is the right one for the child - and what must he be able to do? Adjustable children's desks get top marks.

Children often sit on the screen for several hours a day and then switch from PC to TV and cell phone. What does constant gawking do to them? Read here how to avoid postural damage, what studies show and which guidelines make it easier for children and parents to control computer and television consumption. The right choice of desk for children plays an important role in this.

800, 000 school bags are filled at the end of the summer vacation. And many children get not only bags and satchels when they start school, but also desks and chairs. In the first few months, there is no hurry with this purchase because little or no homework has yet to be done. But as the school year progresses, parents can ask themselves which desk is the right one for the child.

We want furniture to be functional, ergonomic, free of harmful substances, durable and also beautifully designed. Another characteristic of desks for children is crucial: Because body length and proportions change, the chair and table should "grow" with the child - from handicraft to learning to computer. Plaques such as the GS mark for tested safety, the DIN ISO label and the "Blue Angel" environmental label show the way to quality products. Most manufacturers offer various surfaces, colors, cover fabrics and decors. This calls for taste - and that of the child, because after all it is his desk. Before you go to the furniture store, it is good to make yourself a bit smart beforehand and bring some knowledge with you.

Sitting at the desk: the right chair for children

Sitting is static, good sitting is dynamic: Before you buy a chair for the desk, the child should definitely sit as long as possible. It senses whether the backrest and seat are constructed in such a way that they follow the movements of the body. Body proportions do not correspond to any norm. We therefore recommend a desk chair with a wide range of adjustments for individual settings: they adjust their seat height and depth to the owner, their backrest is adjustable in height. Chairs on runners and standing aids are also recommended, as they encourage you to change your sitting posture frequently.

Quality: workmanship and safety

If the seat is upholstered, the front edge should be rounded off comfortably. Ask if the upholstery and cover are "breathable" - so whether they wick sweat away from the body. Of course, children do not only use their desk chair to sit down, so cover fabrics made of easy-care and hard-wearing microfibers are suitable. There are other plus points from the child when the chair turns and rolls. Some manufacturers offer chairs with hard castors for soft coverings or with soft castors for hard floors. A desk chair for children must not be a lightweight that quickly loses its balance, be sure to test the safety against tipping over. The adjustment mechanisms should also be safe for children to use. It is therefore good to have all functions demonstrated.

Headache and improper sitting

Schoolchildren spend almost ten hours a day sitting - be it at school, on the bus or at home doing homework. No wonder that every fifth elementary school pupil complains of an aching back. Another serious factor is that only 60 percent of the children move enough and the tense areas cannot recover equally for everyone. Orthopedic surgeons even blame prolonged sitting for the often complained "school headache". So do something good for your child and buy a real chair for the desk.

Tips: If you move, relax and concentrate better; Dynamic sitting gets your thoughts going.

Always keep moving

Does your child have a desk chair that doesn't move? Ask them to change their sitting posture often, even every ten minutes in the event of complaints: this way, your back can recover and your concentration stays awake. What was previously forbidden is good for us: reading cross-legged on the chair or writing in the heel. Even lounging is allowed. For a change, paint on the floor or learn vocabulary while lying on your stomach. An ergonomic desk and a little fitness guarantee that your child is not one of the "sit-downs". Have a jump rope ready, clamp a horizontal bar in the door frame or screw a wall bar to the wall. Otherwise: send children outside, regardless of the weather, to play ball, run, climb.

The right desk for children

The perfect desk for the child looks like this: The desk top can be adjusted in height and tilts, in whole or in part, for an optimal viewing angle and a relaxed position - ideally stepless: only gently inclined to write, somewhat oblique to read, pretty steep to paint. The table should be at least 60 centimeters deep. Anyone working on a PC needs a depth of 80 centimeters and more. If your child is blessed with the talent of writing on both sides, then there is the right desk for him: Kids Comfort from Kettler - The desk for children can either be set up for left-handers, with the adjustable writing surface on the left and the shelf on the right, or vice versa for right-handers. Your child works at a desk, the top of which cannot be tilted? You can remedy this with an attachment that is attached to the desk. Build it yourself or have one made by a specialist. According to orthopedists and ophthalmologists, the optimal writing angle is 16 degrees.

A children's desk has to endure something

The body must be stable - children quickly put their ideas into practice and in no time at all the desk becomes an Airbus for your child and his friends. Take a close look at the inside: if the guide rails are not solid, for example, drawers will get stuck more easily. You choose the material for the desk according to the type or temperament of the child. Soft woods like pine are sensitive, hard woods like beech can withstand more. Lacquered wood veneers and synthetic resin coatings are easy to care for. You can easily repair dents and scratches in solid wood.

The desk in the right place

Put the furniture in the best position right away: Set up the desk so that the child is neither sitting with his back to the door nor looking directly out of the window. Because both cause unrest. Move the table to the window so that the light falls on the worktop from the left, for left-handers from the right. If the workplace is not in the children's room, make sure that your child can study in a quiet place where it is not distracted by the family or the television.

Are you setting up a computer workstation? The screen is on the desk in such a way that the child does not have to twist his neck: the view goes straight ahead and slightly downwards, the top edge of the monitor is approximately at the level of the neck. The distance between the eyes and the screen should be at least 50 centimeters. Do not place the PC directly in front of the window and do not illuminate it from the front.

Children should be able to work as concentrated as possible at the desk. Therefore, do not place the desk directly in front of the window, but ensure that the desk is supplied with sunlight from the side.

Function and security

Can the desk be expanded? Good: Additional elements such as PC holders, pull-outs or extensions make the desk (later) suitable for computers. Ask for a replacement guarantee. Drawers or (roll) containers store writing and drawing utensils, trough or stop bar collect pens, a hook holds the schoolbag. Accessories such as armrests and bookends also help with homework. Desks for children must be stable and must not tilt or even tilt when adjusting the height. Do you live in an old building? You can even out uneven floors with adjustable foot plates. Have the adjustment mechanism shown before buying a desk, as well as the snap-in of the adjustable plate. Is everything safe for children? Sure, even little ones try out how to do it beforehand. Rounded corners and protective edges are child-friendly.

Desks for children: How to take measurements properly

Height and depth of the seat, desk height and incline, the shape of the seat and the backrest - all of this influences the child's posture. If he sits at a desk that is too high or on a chair that is too high, he will soon lose his desire to do homework. Because those who have to stretch quickly cramp.

The child is the standard of his furniture

To set the writing furniture precisely, you first take a folding rule - measure the child and sit on the chair: Now you can adjust the chair to the child, then the desk to the seated child.

Guidelines for table height, seat height and depth in relation to body size are specified in DIN / ISO standard 5970 (in centimeters):

Seat height

Seat depth

Table height

The optimal sitting position

To ensure that your child sits optimally at the desk, you should note the following: The seat height corresponds to the child's knee height. When sitting, both feet are flat on the floor, the horizontal upper and vertical lower legs form an angle of 90 degrees or more. The table top is just below the elbow height, with the upper arms hanging loosely down. The angle between the upper and lower arms should be at least 90 degrees. Don't forget to check the furniture settings every six months, because children grow seven centimeters on average every year.
