Few would like to do without a privacy screen at the window - even if you actually want to capture as much light as possible in the house. However, privacy screens do not mean a dark room without a view outside. We have collected great ideas for you.

Stylish window design with pleated blinds

Pleated blinds have been used for years to provide optimal privacy protection for a wide variety of window shapes. With rectangular windows, they show their strengths as tensioned folding blinds that are suitable for installation in or on the window element. Free-hanging pleated blinds, on the other hand, adorn rather special window shapes, as they usually occur in modern houses.

Pleated blinds come in a wide variety of colors, with or without patterns and with different materials - so there is something for every taste. You can mount the protection either in the window rebate or on the window frame. You don't even have to drill, because the pleated blinds are attached with the help of clamps. The advantage of pleated blinds: You can adjust them at any time and open or close them completely as required. So-called honeycomb pleated blinds also serve as sun protection in summer and in winter they keep the heat in the room longer. Anyone who buys pleated blinds in standard sizes gets off pretty cheaply. For custom-made products, you have to expect at least 50 euros.

Privacy screen thanks to roller blind

Roller blinds are well-tried and are still used today as a privacy screen to neighbors. Just like pleated blinds, they are available in a wide variety of colors and materials and can be rolled up or rolled down as required. Roller blinds with a side pull are the most common, but electrically operated roller blinds are on the rise. Depending on your needs, you can choose between different levels of transparency. For a standard model, the costs are around 10 to 15 euros. In contrast, the costs for electrically operated roller blinds are significantly higher.

Classic privacy protection: curtains in combination with curtains

Curtains are probably the most traditional privacy protection solution. They are usually made of opaque material and are mainly used to darken rooms. The problem: They hardly let light through. So if you want to stay in a bright room unobserved during the day, you better choose curtains. These are much more transparent than curtains and let in enough daylight. But it is precisely when dusk falls that curtains cannot guarantee absolute privacy. This is why a combination of curtains and curtains is suitable, for example, in the bedroom. In this way, you shield the eyes with the curtains during the day without the light falling too far. The curtain is then arranged in front of the curtain as a side scarf and can be pulled up at any time if necessary.

Modern sliding curtains as privacy screens

The wide window fronts of modern houses in particular let in a lot of light - but also provide unwanted insights. Traditional roller blinds and pleated blinds quickly look inelegant here. Sliding curtains in simple colors fit perfectly into a puristic environment and can also be pushed aside or even replaced at any time. Combine different levels of transparency in a sliding curtain that creates tension in the room and forms an individual privacy protection solution. If you would like to bring some color into your home, a single colored fabric panel will set the desired accent.

Japanese panels are a special form of sliding curtain. They usually consist of Japanese washi paper with a frosted glass look. This is opaque and still lets light into the room. Wooden slats serve as visual subdivisions, which additionally stabilize the paper and give the curtain an Asian flair.

The somewhat different privacy screen: window film

Window films are available in a wide variety of designs. For example, you can choose reflective foils that provide excellent protection against heat and UV light, both inside and outside. However, you have to keep in mind that less light enters the room through these foils.

In addition, decorative window films provide individual privacy protection - particularly popular in children's rooms. Films offer particularly inexpensive privacy protection and are easy to clean, but cannot darken the room if required.

Ideal for the home office: slat curtain

Slat curtains are mainly known from offices. But there are also beautiful models for the home office in the living area, with which one can shield foreign looks. They not only serve as a privacy screen, but also ensure that the incoming light does not dazzle us. Because the vertically arranged slats can be turned as required. In addition, the slat curtain can also be pushed completely to the side, because it is usually attached to a rail system and can be pulled up and down again. The choice of colors ranges from trend colors to colored accents to softer tones. The width of the individual slats can vary from 63 millimeters to 250 millimeters. The slat curtains are particularly popular because they do not darken a room and are nonetheless opaque - perfect for the work area at home.

Privacy screen in the bathroom: frosted glass

Frosted glass is often used in bathrooms, but the contours of the residents remain recognizable. The disadvantage of frosted glass is very obvious: once the window has been installed with frosted glass, it cannot be replaced so quickly. So if you prefer to be more flexible, you should also use pleated blinds or roller blinds in the bathroom. These are also available with a coating so that they can also be optimally applied in damp rooms.

Privacy screen solutions for outdoors

There are also several options for attaching a privacy screen outdoors. Below is an overview.

It is hard to imagine modern houses without them - blinds or venetian blinds. They can be operated electrically and can be set individually depending on the daylight. In summer, they also serve as effective heat protection. Most venetian blinds cope well with common weather conditions such as rain, hail and snow.

Roller shutters have always served as optimal privacy protection. There are different mounting options, but they all have in common that they block both sunlight and other people's glances. They are also good protection against burglary.

In conservatories, side awnings are sometimes attached to the outside of the windows. They combine sun and privacy protection with a beautiful look and can be selected in a wide variety of colors.

Can privacy screens do more?

When decorating the window, some accessories are also suitable as sun protection. Opaque curtains or foiled roller blinds - and of course the tried-and-tested roller shutters or blinds.

Pleated blinds, on the other hand, are not suitable for protecting a room from heat in summer. Only special felt curtains have a temperature-regulating effect - they also serve as sound insulation and are made to measure. However, if you feel disturbed by permanent noise, you should rather think about soundproof windows.
