The light color or color temperature of lamps, LEDs or electrical devices strongly influences our well-being, indeed our health. A prime example from practice: Can you fall asleep after a long TV evening? Even if it wasn't a very exciting film?

This is often due to the bluish light that most TV sets radiate: cool, rather blue light signals our body that it is bright day. Looking at the smartphone display for a long time before going to bed can be even worse. Because the cell phone also shines in a bluish shimmer, and this light is closer to the eye, often only thirty centimeters away. There, on the retina, are receptors that are sensitive to the color temperature of light and help to determine our rhythm of life.

How does the color temperature of light affect our body?

Light affects not only the visual cells in our eyes, but also the so-called ganglion cells. Inspired by light, they release messenger substances that readjust our internal clock and regulate a large number of processes in the body: pulse and body temperature as well as alertness. If the light is bluish and bright, the hormone serotonin increases, which signals to our body: Be active! If it gets dark or the light shines in warm, reddish tones like a campfire, this means relaxation and rest for us: the sleep hormone melatonin is released.

There are now indications that if we ignore these rhythms for a long time with our lifestyle, it can lead to health problems. In principle, humans are dependent on light, almost like the world of plants. It was only in 2017 that the Nobel Prize Committee awarded its prize for medicine to research this inner clock.

Housing advice: which light for which room?

Fortunately, lighting technology has made significant progress in lighting over the past few years and has turned medical findings on color temperature into products: Modern LEDs can produce many light colors. You can see that on the package. In addition to the power (in watts) and the brightness (in lumens), it is also noted which light color is emitted.

Warm light is more suitable for lighting in the bedroom or living room, neutral or cool is more suitable for work rooms, kitchen lighting and the hallway. Often the light color is also given in the unit "degrees Kelvin": values ​​around 3, 000 degrees correspond to a rather warm light, values ​​around 5, 000 degrees (and more) are rather bluish and cool.

With some lamps, these colors can be influenced in a targeted manner and varied according to the time of day. Such offers for "Human Centric Lighting" (HCL) already exist in offices and in industry. It is a light geared towards the rhythm of the human being. Biodynamic lighting concepts are used at workplaces to increase the well-being and thus the productivity of the employees. Hospitals (such as the Berlin Charité) also use such lighting technologies. Studies have already shown that healthy light results in better patient recovery.

Healthy light: Human Centric Lighting (HCL)

Finished lights with HCL technology for home are not yet widely used. Only a few manufacturers (such as Artemide, Occhio or Regent) offer such products. Existing lights can be upgraded to Human Centric Lighting. Several large manufacturers (including Philips and Ledvance) have been launching such systems for some time. They consist of special retrofit LED lamps with the common E 27 or E 14 bases. Combined with an app on a smartphone, they can be used for lighting control in the smart home. For example, you can program them so that they automatically create the right lighting mood according to the time of day and season and thus contribute to healthy living. A spontaneous intervention is also possible.

In addition to the apps, there are also systems on the market that work with smart switches. Many of these systems can be integrated into a smart home or controlled with voice-controlled personal assistants (such as Amazon Echo, Google Home or Apple Homepod). But be careful: Not all devices are always compatible with each other. The most common Zigbee standard, for example, is behind the smart home concepts from Google and Amazon and works with their voice assistants. So you can switch the lights on and off using voice commands and call up certain scenarios as desired.

The quality of the emitted LED light has also steadily improved, and there are now illuminants on the market whose color temperature is quite close to the spectrum of sunlight. The color rendering index CRI (also called Ra value) shows the quality of a light source. The closer the value is to 100, the better. Values ​​below 80 should not be accepted indoors. Daylight is the healthiest, of course. Because daylight best corresponds to the needs of our body and our minds.
