Stylish and modern: the renaissance of the wall hanging
The tapestry is back! In our increasingly technological world, we inevitably yearn for sensual materials and surfaces to compensate. It is therefore not surprising that we have been celebrating a comeback of traditional wall decorations for several years. Because textile wall hangings with their lively feel represent a counterpoint to the ubiquitous high-tech world in the smart home. As so-called “wall hangings”, carpets and macramé on the walls now increase the hygienic feel-good flair and compete with classic picture galleries.
In addition to classic, oriental patterns with curved shapes, flowers and blossoms, tapestries in more modern versions with graphic-looking patterns or expressive motifs are updated - and bring the magic of foreign cultures into the hallway, bedroom or living room. An additional plus: tapestries dampen noise, swallow sound and are a general-purpose weapon against poor room acoustics.
By the way: made of mostly fine materials, tapestries are not suitable for laying on the floor.

Where do tapestries come from?
The high art of woven pictures, also called tapestry, has a long tradition and was practiced thousands of years ago. In ancient Egypt, particularly valuable tapestries were added as grave additions.
The manufacture of carpets, also known as knitting, is one of the oldest handicrafts of mankind. So tapestries in Persia were considered to be particularly noble treasures due to their elaborate production. In addition to the decorative aspect, the practical function of concealing drafty corners and thus creating a warm nest also always played a role.
In Europe, noble wall hangings on the threshold from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance experienced their heyday. As a gift, they showed high social status and were proudly hung up for decoration. That is the case again today, which is why we have put together a picture gallery for you. Let yourself be inspired!

Interior trend macrame
If you don't want a whole tapestry, macrame wall hangings are a nice alternative. The knotting technique from the Orient for the production of ornaments, hanging baskets or even wall hangings was a welcome trend in the seventies and is currently back in fashion. Knots for knots are created with this old knotting technique small works of art, which are the perfect complement for a boho or ethno style.

Hit the wall: fixing and hanging tapestries
When hanging, pay particular attention to the weight of the tapestry. Depending on the size, flat-woven carpets are preferable to heavy wool carpets. Hand-knotted Persian carpets made of fine silk are particularly noble here. For a stable device you can, for example:
- build a frame out of wooden strips the size of the carpet and clamp the carpet with U-angles to hang it up,
- use strong adhesive Velcro,
- Sew loops of tear-resistant fabric to the carpet and hang it on a curtain rod or a bamboo tube,
- attach a cord of sturdy fabric to the back of the carpet as a hanger.

Small care guide for tapestries
So that your tapestry stays beautiful for a long time, it is worthwhile to create it by hand. That's how it's done:
- Sucking prevents dirt from getting deep inside. In order not to strain the fibers, do without a brush attachment.
- Knocking removes deep-lying dirt, dust and bacteria.
- You should only clean after you have tested the color fastness in an inconspicuous place. If the fabric fades, only treat with a steam cleaner. Valuable tapestries are best brought to professional cleaning.
- Of course, the carpet must not fade ! To ensure that the color does not diminish, rub dampened salt into the carpet, let it work for half an hour and then brush it off.
