The steam bath is a version of the classic sauna. In contrast to the dry heat of the sauna, the steam bath has comparatively low temperatures of 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, which many people tolerate better. The air humidity is 100 percent, which is higher than in the sauna. Many people also find that more pleasant. In addition to relaxation, inhaling the steam also brings some health benefits - no wonder that the ancient Romans already appreciated the steam bath.

Health benefits of the steam bath

Regular steam bathing has a positive effect on the body. Through the alternation of external heat and cooling stimuli, the body is briefly put into a kind of artificial fever, which stimulates the immune system. In addition, the circulation gets going and blood pressure and heart rate increase. This opens the pores and the skin is cleaned. The change from warm to cold means relaxation for the muscles. Steam bathing is particularly suitable for rheumatism patients.

Those with respiratory problems should steam bath regularly. Because the mucous membranes are moistened and the dilated blood vessels conduct more oxygen into the organs. Fragrance oils or other additives such as eucalyptus additionally alleviate the symptoms.

Depending on your needs, you can choose different infusions:

Steam bath for the home

Steam baths can also be installed in your own four walls. This is usually easier than installing a sauna.

Good to know: A steam bath can also be installed wherever there is a shower. Because a steam bath for home is usually a multifunction shower.

A steam bath can also be used as a shower. The difference: A steam bath has an upper cover and has a regulation system for the exhaust air. Steam glands are distributed in the cabin and seating is integrated. The water supplied is brought to a boil in a steam generator and then fed into the cabin through heat-resistant hoses and nozzles. Through a ventilation system, the steam is always directed outside, so that fresh air gets into the cabin.

Cost of a steam bath

Basically you have to expect costs of around 6000 to 8000 euros. More complex constructions with special extras such as light modules or aroma functions cost significantly more.

Different types of steam bath

Depending on the culture and tradition, there are five types of steam baths:

The Caladarium or Roman steam bath

In the Roman steam bath, which is called Caladarium, there is a humidity of 100 percent, the temperatures are between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius. This type of steam bath is therefore ideal for people with respiratory diseases.

The tepidarium

The Tepidarium can be a good alternative for people who cannot cope with the dry heat of the Finnish sauna and cannot stand the humidness of the Roman steam bath. It also comes from the Roman Empire, but differs significantly from the Caladarium due to the lower temperatures of 38 to 40 degrees.

The hammam

The hammam comes from Turkey and refers to a steam bath with several rooms, each with different temperatures. The temperature in the first room is around 50 degrees Celsius. The second room is then 10 degrees Celsius cooler, the third room is massaged and in the fourth room you can perform cold and warm infusions.

The banja

The Russian version of the steam bath is called "Banja" and has the same temperature and humidity as the Roman version. In addition to the sweat room, there is a washing room and a relaxation room. Some Banja users even make a beer infusion.

Irish steam bath

The temperature of the Irish steam bath is 50 to 55 degrees Celsius. However, there is no mist formation as fresh air is supplied at the same time.

Sauna or steam bath?

The biggest difference between sauna and steam bath is the temperature. Temperatures in the sauna are usually up to 80 degrees Celsius, while the temperature in the steam bath is significantly lower at 50 degrees Celsius. However, the humidity in the steam bath is significantly higher, there is even moisture oversaturation, so that visible droplets form in the air.

Whether it's a sauna or a steam bath, it basically depends on personal preferences. Both have positive effects on health. The only important thing is not to stay in it for more than 15 minutes. Otherwise circulatory problems can occur. The optimal sitting time is between eight and 12 minutes.

Rules for steam bathing: Cool down properly and relax

Cooling down and relaxing are also part of proper sauna and steam bathing. This regeneration phase is extremely important and should never be forgotten. For example, take a walk in the fresh air for several minutes or take a quick cold shower. This cools the skin and gets the circulation going again. You should avoid abrupt cooling in a plunge pool, as this causes the blood pressure to rise too quickly and causes circulatory problems. The cold phases should be as long as the warm phases. This is the only way to strengthen the immune system in the long term.

Steam bathing during a cold

Saunas and steam baths strengthen the immune system, but you should refrain from it during a cold. As a rule, the circulation is already weakened and the respiratory tract is often mucus-filled. It is particularly difficult to take a deep breath. If you have a fever, you should never go to the steam bath. This can even cause lasting damage to the body.

Steam bathing during pregnancy

At the beginning of pregnancy, the circulatory system is stressed, so steam bathing and saunas are not suitable for the first three months. Afterwards it is quite possible to have a sauna about once a week, even when pregnant. As a rule, dry heat is better tolerated than moist heat during pregnancy. Steam bathing is therefore not suitable for everyone. Anyone who regularly saunas or goes to the steam bath before pregnancy does not have to feel their way slowly during pregnancy.

Those suffering from high blood pressure, varicose veins, circulatory or kidney problems should avoid steam bathing and saunas. The heat can also cause labor pains shortly before birth.
