Green wellness oasis on the roof

There is always room for wellness somewhere - maybe on the roof! The inspiration in the photo at the top can be found in Baden-Württemberg: from the Caribbean wooden island you look down into the Danube valley and the roofs of Ulm. The water of the planted pond (from biotope, 0.5 to 1 meter deep) ripples: three bubbles of foam enrich it with oxygen. In the evening the setting sun bathes the scene in delicate pink. 40 square meters of plant pond biologically clean the water in the pool next to it, 60 square meters in size and 1.5 meters deep. It was concreted on the slope and supports it. "Double use" was the guiding principle of Schellheimer Gartenbau, because the planted oasis for wellness and the wooden deck sit on the roof of a large garage. The geometric duo is much nicer and more useful than a gravel flat roof.

In this example, too, the space on the roof was used to create a wellness oasis. The photo shows a roof terrace converted into a wellness paradise. A wooden pavilion houses the comfort shower and to the right of it a sauna. In front of the sauna window, the outside tub widens. Hardy bamboo plants are lined up in the raised bed for privacy, the Japanese maple gives color. Vis-à-vis, smooth-edged boards close the supports of the small pergola to form a man-high fence that protects from view and wind. Just a few steps over the wooden deck - you have already arrived at the second wooden box, where loungers are waiting. The idyll in the city center of Erbach is an attractive local recreation area. It was planned by architect Karl Kaffenberger.

Renovate the bathroom for home wellness

Everyone wants a small oasis for wellness at home, but there is not always additional space for a sauna or the like. A great option in this case: simply renovate an existing room. For example, design your own bathroom like that of a noble wellness hotel. For the example in the photo, architect Kay Miksch was inspired by chic churches. There, stucco and paintings climb visually distorted into the vault, pretend more height than is actually there. He transferred the principle to the 4.8 square meter bathroom in a Hamburg apartment. Luminaires hidden behind the suspended frame let the ceiling float and blur transitions. The client has painted the sky on the flat ceiling, with gradient and stars. The curtain track, rain shower head and radio are installed in the frame. The mirror cabinet is half in the wall, visually broadening the room. Tiles measuring 60 by 60 centimeters make the floor look more spacious. Metallic shiny panels - actually also floor tiles - lengthen the wall.

More light and cosiness ensure wellness at home

Important factors for wellness, i.e. well-being, at home: light that illuminates the living space and the mood, a beautiful view outside and comfort. Few, small and drafty windows - this was how you built in the 1960s. When you renew your windows, you create more living value. In the example in the picture below, this means: Window out, long lintel in and a chain of folding doors that can be parked outside as a package to save space. This turns the dining room into a hub between inside and outside, a transit zone of particular charm. In addition, the dark appendage transforms into an elegant space in which it is now much easier to relax and linger. A floor-to-ceiling glazing on the front side also illuminates and allows a view around the corner.

Before: Small windows that let little light into the room are not conducive to wellness at home.

Afterwards: This way, more light is brought in during the day and more comfort at all times - an important prerequisite for experiencing wellness at home.

Enjoy home wellness in the winter garden

Like sitting outside, but protected - a winter garden makes it possible. A great trick: If you glaze the balcony, you don't need any construction space, expand the living space and can also use the patio for wellness at home in transitional times. A suitable transparent supplement can be found for all buildings and materials. For this Wilhelminian style house in Oldenburg, monument and heat protection had to be reconciled. Architect Ingo Gabriel had large energy-saving windows installed. The fine, steel structure fastened on the outside in the skylight zone is reminiscent of the small, old bull's-eye panes: this is how you can interpret a historical motif in a modern way. Builders and conservationists liked that.

With the built-in atrium, your home looks like a spa

How can you create a patio if the building is a listed building, as a single object and in a row of houses? If the roof structure should be largely preserved and changes from the street must not be recognizable? Stuttgart-based architect Tobias Bochmann, together with colleagues from Somaa architects - and in coordination with the monument office - found an ingenious solution that made you feel at home in the spa. They opened the roof and sank a square courtyard there. A mirror strip hides the roof cross-section, the mirrored glass underneath adapts.

Wellness at home in the basement

The bathroom on the ground floor of the Augsburg bungalow is only equipped with a shower - with a tub it would have been tight in the room. But there was still plenty of space in the basement. The builders put two rooms together and made it a comfortable and bright center for wellness at home - with a whirlpool, tiled bench for swap footbaths, a shower and a cabin for the small sauna. Architect Thomas Meese, who modernized the entire atrium building, upgraded the health suite with stone-clad walls and high-quality wooden floors. No daylight, no noise penetrate down: switch on the lights, enjoy rest and wellness at home!
