A free-standing bathtub has its own special charm. Imagine: the warm water plays around your skin, the foam mountain smells of your favorite bath essence, you take a deep breath, stretch all fours away. After just a few minutes in the bathtub, everyday stress ceases and the recovery phase begins.

No, today's free-standing bathtubs no longer have anything to do with the space-saving bathroom-in-the-kitchen solutions of the post-war rental houses from the 1950s. Today's free-standing bathtubs, with their good looks, can transform a normal bathroom into a luxury bathroom. They adapt to your taste: oval, oblong or angular, small or large, with or without feet. And the material is no longer just limited to the cold cast iron from back then: there are free-standing bathtubs made of natural stone, porcelain, wood, mineral casting, concrete, acrylic, copper and steel enamel. With its thin walls, the freestanding bathtub looks light and elegant, timeless. With thicker walls, it becomes an unmistakable, massive highlight in your bathroom.

Individual extras for the freestanding bathtub

Of course, there are matching fittings for every bathtub. Also freestanding or classically mounted in the bathtub. In some cases, the faucet and temperature controls are also attached to the wall above the tub. Then, however, the result is often no longer a 100% freestanding bathtub. Speaking of above: For the absolute wow effect, you can attach a rain shower head to the ceiling above the free-standing bathtub.

And as if you weren't already caught in the agony of choice, there are also extras on top: massage jets (then the product is called a freestanding whirlpool), lighting effects that light up the water in all colors of the rainbow at the push of a button, and so on the free-standing bathtub itself can take on any color - and even be transparent. You can also place your wellness goddess on a pedestal or have it hung in a kind of frame.

Luxury despite the hustle and bustle of the family

All well and good, some parents may think now. But I'm not spending several thousand euros on a non-functional freestanding bathtub. Too deep. Too bad to clean. Too sensitive. Not feasible with children. But don't worry: as a parent, you don't have to do without the luxury of wellness. How high the side walls are depends on the model. And everything else from the material. Here is a list of easy-care options for families:

Cast iron: tried and tested in the manufacture of free-standing bathtubs, cast iron is making a comeback. Whether the classic with the lion's feet or a modern variant in the colors of your choice. Easy to clean with a damp cloth and detergent.

Steel enamel: Steel enamel is very resilient, easy to clean and should a paddle boat capsize effectively in it, the enamel can be repaired.

Sanitary acrylic: Sanitary acrylic is also well suited to the bustling family life. The material is light, resistant, non-slip and shockproof. If there is any damage, you can even repair it yourself with a repair kit from the manufacturer. In terms of cost, it is the cheapest. Unfortunately, acrylic can warp and discolour. In addition, it must not be cleaned with sharp sanitary cleaners.

Mineral casting: Due to the high flexibility of the material, mineral casting, i.e. the mixture between synthetic resin and minerals, is suitable for unusual shapes. There are several types of mineral resins, the best known is Corian. The smooth surface is easy to clean and the manufacturers advertise its durability. Even the most chemical disinfectants could not harm him.

Ceramic: The material is a classic and is not only used in the bathroom for the free-standing bathtub. It can be cleaned with commercially available cleaning agents, has a smooth surface and is inexpensive compared to the free-standing bathtubs made of concrete or copper. However, it is extremely difficult and it can easily flake off a bit.

It is important that, before you buy a free-standing bathtub and replace the old bathtub, you have an expert check whether it can be installed at the location you want. Freestanding bathtubs are very heavy - even without the average 280 liters of water. As a result, not every house has the right statics for a concrete tub. If you do not want to use a synthetic resin alternative, you must reinforce the floor. You also need at least 55 centimeters of space around the free-standing bathtub, which is between 1.74 and two meters long and at least 79.5 centimeters wide, so that you can easily get past it to get in and out. In addition, you will probably have to have the fresh water and sewage pipes extended so that the fittings can also stand free.

You should consider the latter especially if you want to set up the bathtub outside the bathroom. A solution that more and more homeowners choose when the bathroom is simply too small for a nice large free-standing bathtub, but there is enough space in the hallway between the bathroom and the bedroom.

If you have no space at all, but still want a free-standing bathtub, you can consider installing the mini version of the free-standing bathtub: 1.20 meters long, 75 centimeters wide, 181 liters capacity.

Showcase the free-standing bath properly

If you have large glass windows in the bathroom, position the free-standing bathtub so that you can enjoy as much panorama as possible while bathing. This not only helps you to relax even more, it also emphasizes the freestanding bathtub itself. If you don't have a window front with a spectacular view of a mountain, don't let your head hang: with a fancy lamp or other accessories such as pictures, high candle holders and fancy towel racks you can skillfully stage the free-standing bathtub.
