Painting walls: The right materials and tools

To paint the walls you need: painter's tape, painter's film, ladder, telescopic handle, brush, painter's roller, painter's spatula, spatula, a paint tray or a scraping grid (provided the roller fits in the paint bucket). Make sure the rolls are of good quality. Plush likes to leave lint on the walls - which is annoying later. You shouldn't save in the wrong place here. Rolls with nylon or polyamide cover are best suited.

Paint the most beautiful colors on the walls

Given the variety of colors available for painting the walls, it is important to clarify which one is best suited for your DIY project:

  • Emulsion paint: This is the most common color. Due to its thick layer, it is well covering, washable and low-odor. It also dries quickly.
  • Silicate paint: It is suitable for mineral substrates such as concrete or plasterboard. Silicate paint is characterized by water vapor permeability. This means that the underground can breathe. Since the mineral color is alkaline, dirt, mold and bacteria have no chance - making it ideal for allergy sufferers.
  • Latex paint: This variant belongs to the family of emulsion paints, but is more resistant. Latex paint can withstand a lot: It is water-repellent, abrasion and abrasion resistant and hard-wearing. That is why it is often used in the kitchen or children's room.
  • Glaze: This variant is semi-transparent (not very opaque) and is best suited for wiping and dabbing techniques on walls that have already been painted.

Once you have chosen a suitable wall color, the question remains whether you want the color in matt or glossy. Shiny colors reflect the light and the color can come out more depending on the light. Glossy colors are also easier to clean. Matt colors are all the more saturated and calm and are therefore well suited for the living room and bedroom area.

Tip: To determine how much paint you need for the walls, it helps to precisely determine the area of the wall with a distance meter. Read here which laser rangefinder performed best in the test.

Avoid mistakes when painting walls

Do you have a plastered wall? Then you should check the current status to avoid later mistakes when painting walls, such as cracks or bubbles.

  • Old coat of paint: paint over the surface: does the paint crumble or are there cracks? At this point, the adhesive tape test is also suitable: Press a piece of adhesive tape firmly onto the paint and pull it off with a jerk. If pieces of color stick to the tape, the coating is no longer sufficiently strong. In this case, a clean pre-treatment of the walls is a prerequisite for a perfect result. The best way to remove crumbling paint is with a spatula and / or sandpaper.
  • Fresh plaster: If you have freshly plastered walls, you should let them dry thoroughly, otherwise the residual moisture will cause the paint to peel or blister. Alkaline residues can remain on cement and lime plaster. Fluat neutralizes them (there is in the building materials trade - caution, caustic! Wear gloves and safety glasses). Then wash with water and let everything dry well. Compensate highly absorbent plaster with deep foundation (more on this: touch up the interior plaster yourself).
  • Wetting test: If you splash the plaster with water, dark lines reveal hair and network cracks. If the water is quickly absorbed, the plaster is highly absorbent. The result is a higher ink consumption, the paint is thinner. Uneven absorbency makes it stained.
  • Cracks or depressions: You can easily and quickly smooth them out with a spatula and filler.
  • Soiling: Dust and cobwebs are removed with a brush or a feather duster.
  • Mould: The black spots thrive on cool surfaces where water vapor condenses. Mold also grows in the plaster. There are fungicides (also special colors for wet rooms) that can prevent mold growth. Once the mold has spread, vinegar water helps temporarily. Permanently, however, only insulate the wall from the outside or from the inside (with calcium silicate panels) and regularly ventilate properly.
  • Yellow-brown spots: The cause should be quickly remedied here by blocking lime plaster with Fluat, painting gypsum plaster with alum or with an insulating primer.
  • Efflorescence: These occur when moisture evaporates from the wall. The salts crystallize on the surface and lift the paint off the surface. You should let these efflorescences dry out and brush off. It is important to fix the cause of the wet masonry.

Preparation for painting the walls: the most important steps

In order to save yourself a lot of work afterwards, you should prepare walls and rooms well before painting.

1. All furniture either out, in another room, or in the middle of the room. Now it is time to hang up all the pictures, decorative elements and shelves. If you still need holes for dowels later, you can put in some kitchen paper. But if you are planning a complete redesign of the walls, it is advisable to fill the holes with plaster.

A well plastered wall will later make the work of painting walls easier.

2. You can remove sockets and light switches (caution: switch off the power!) Or simply tape them off. It is best to mask the baseboards with a painter's tape, the bottom is covered with painter's foil. Tip : There is paint film with adhesive strips. This will save you some time. Then it's the turn of the door and window frames. The door surfaces and floors can be covered with foil or painting fleece. The radiators should all be tightly wrapped in foil - this will make painting behind the heater much easier.

Paint the walls: how it works

Brush the corners and edges with a brush. To loosen loose fluff from the roller, you can roll it onto a piece of paper beforehand. Only half immerse the brush and wipe it off. If you attach a piece of tape across the paint bucket beforehand, you can easily wipe off the paint brush here. Apply the paint quickly: first diagonally, then vertically. Important: While you are painting the walls, all windows should remain closed, as some drafts dry too quickly due to the draft and streaks can form afterwards. So only ventilate when you are done with all the walls in the room. You can rinse the roller warm overnight and wrap it in aluminum foil. It is best to place the brushes in a glass with water. It is best to pack the scraper grid airtight in a bag.

Paint wood and metal

Paint wood

Do you have wooden window and door frames? They also need a make-over at some point. Important if you live for rent: First ask the landlord for permission! Before painting, clean the wood with hot soapy water or a special wood cleaner. Then let it dry overnight. The next day you can carefully but thoroughly sand the wooden frames. Paint that splinters off can be scraped off with a scraper in the direction of the grain. Use high quality wood paint. There are good, opaque special colors. But lime colors are also excellent.

Paint metal

You must also prepare metal surfaces well. The easiest way to remove existing rust stains is with steel wool or a wire brush. You can degrease iron with nitro thinner and prime with rust inhibitor. Tin can be cleaned with a neutral household cleaner and abrasive fleece, aluminum with aluminum cleaner, zinc with ammonia spirit. If the surface is free of dirt and dust, you can apply a rust protection primer. As soon as it is completely dry, you can start brushing with the paint.

Paint over wallpaper

If you want to paint over your wallpaper, please note the following: If there are already several layers of wallpaper on top of each other, it is best to remove them completely from the wall. They can be softened and removed with water and detergent or a steam device. Check whether the wallpaper is still firmly and cleanly adhering to the wall, otherwise unsightly detachments from the wall can occur later.

Also carry out a wipe test : if you rub the surface with a dark cloth, the abrasion paint will become visible. Also pay attention to chipped paint, open seams and loose parts. If necessary, you can paste loose edges again.

Non-woven wallpapers or woodchip wallpaper are best suited for painting. Patterned and colored wallpapers, however, less. Water-based paints (emulsion paints) are not suitable for painting, as they can otherwise cause wrinkles and bubbles - this affects old wallpapers in particular. Latex paints are the best partners here.
