Dried grass is not the only consequence of climate change. When there is hardly any rain from May and the temperatures almost burst the thermometer, it is clear that farmers can also expect little yield this year. The good news for hobby gardeners: a dried up lawn can still be saved - we will explain what to do.

The garden owner despairs because the lawn dries up and he cannot water it regularly due to cost or resource reasons. Trees or shrubs are rooted deeper than the lawn, so they can still be supplied from deeper layers of the soil and hardly give the owner sleepless nights. The roots of the lawn, on the other hand, are only ten centimeters deep, which means that the lawn dries up relatively quickly above ground: First, the individual stalks lose their green color, then individual sections of lawn turn yellow to brown, and finally the entire lawn falls victim to the drought.

Luckily, lawn grasses are extremely robust and stubborn plants! Although the above-ground part of the lawn has dried up, i.e. died, the underground roots survive - and so lawns can breathe again and recover after the next rain. What you can no longer look forward to after this process is a uniform lawn image. Lawn takes longer to grow than lawn weeds, and so it can happen that they have now conquered parts of the lawn for themselves.

If you want to bring your lawn over the winter so that it grows again without gaps in the spring, you should pay attention to some details when autumn care. Basically, you continue to work as you do the rest of the year: mowing, fertilizing, scarifying.

Lawn care in autumn

Although the lawn does not grow as quickly at lower temperatures, you should mow it as you always do - about four centimeters long. The only important thing now is that you remove the clippings as much as possible, as colder temperatures prevent them from rotting, they remain there and smear the lawn. Falling autumn leaves, fallen fruit or branches make it difficult for the lawn to absorb light and allow mosses and fungal diseases to grow and spread. So just rake the lawn off twice a week. If you don't want to rake up the leaves, use a lawn mower with a grass catcher or convert your mulch mower so that it also collects residues and leaves.

Remove lawn weeds from dried grass

Lawn weeds that have deep roots can cope with dry periods much better than the lawn grasses and conquer entire areas of your lawn in no time. Therefore check your lawn for any weeds in autumn and remove the weeds from the lawn. The best and safest way to combat deep-rooted weeds, such as dandelions, is to prick the leaf rosette including the long taproot out of the ground. To cut out, use either a kitchen knife or a special lawn weed cutter.

Autumn fertilizer for the lawn

The dried up lawn has just recovered and winter is just around the corner. This time, too, is not exactly child's play for the lawn - snow, frost, temperature fluctuations or waterlogging can cause considerable problems. So support him in the months of September and October with special autumn lawn fertilizer.

Scarify dried up lawn

You can also scarify a dried lawn until the beginning of November - until the beginning of November. The scarifying blades mainly remove dried and matted lawn residues after dry summers. However, scarifying is not uncontroversial among experts and gardeners. "The scarifier not only removes the moss, but also injures the lawn because most hobby gardeners set it too low, " says Sabine Klingelhöfer, horticultural engineer at Neudorff. She thinks that scarifying is "a measure that should only be taken in exceptional cases." Experience has shown that anyone who provides their lawn with organic fertilizer two to three times a year does not need to scarify at all, according to the garden expert. The microorganisms contained in the fertilizer decompose the lawn felt reliably.

It is important in any case: Only scarify when the lawn is completely green again after a dry summer and has responded to the fertilization with a growth spurt.

Bald, dry spots in the lawn

Bald spots, especially if they are larger than a decimeter in diameter, offer a target for weeds and should therefore be sown or sown again. For sowing, loosen the soil on the bare areas with a rake and spread the seeds, preferably a special post-sowing lawn mixture. It is now important that the floor does not dry out. Sprinkle these areas with a lawn sprinkler five times for five minutes on dry days.

If your lawn is completely dry, you should do a complete reseeding. You can only do this until the beginning of October - until then the floor is still warm and it is wetter than in summer. These are optimal germination conditions for the seeds. Wait for a warm, damp day and sow new lawn. To ensure that the lawn does not dry up again next year, choose a seed mix that copes particularly well with drought. It has proven useful to cover the freshly sown seeds with a thin layer of potting soil - so they are better protected from drying out in the germination phase. If there is a lack of water, water regularly, the soil must never dry out until the new grasses have reached a height of five to six centimeters.

How does the lawn get through the winter?

As long as the lawn is still growing, it will be cut - after that, in winter, you should step on it as little as possible! In case of hoarfrost or frost, traces of treading can occur that remain visible for a long time. Ice crystals in the plant cells burst under pressure and damage or destroy the stalks and leaves. Since there is no growth over the cold period, the turf can only regenerate at the treading points in spring.

Should you ever have to go to the garden, be it to shovel snow or to scare away the neighboring cat, lay out a provisional path made of boards. Your weight is no longer just on one or two feet, but is spread over a larger area. So the lawn is less stressed. Snow itself does not harm the lawn. It only becomes critical if it is tucked together on the lawn for a long time.

When the snow disappears, you can limescale your lawn if it's too acidic. Get a pH meter and check the soil. If the pH is above 5, you can do without liming. If the thaw or rainwater does not drain properly, you can sand your lawn to make the soil more permeable in the long term. To do this, spread an approximately two centimeter thick layer of construction sand over the entire lawn. However, this measure should be repeated over several years so that it has a noticeable effect.

Lawn care in spring

As soon as the first forsythia has blossomed and the temperatures are rising again, you can start lawn care. Start by raking off the lawn thoroughly. Then take care of molehills and puddles on the lawn. Simply pull molehills long and wait for new lawn to grow through. You can remove puddles by loosening this area with a rake or something similar and letting the water drain off. After all bumps have been removed, you can mow for the first time. The lawn is then fertilized - ideally with long-term organic or mineral fertilizer. It works for about four months and gives the lawn extra strength for growth. If the lawn now contains a lot of moss, you can scarify two weeks after the first fertilization and re-sow bare patches.

It is best to water your lawn in the morning. Evaporation is less than usual and the roots absorb moisture better.

Proper irrigation prevents dry grass

If you want to prevent your lawn from drying out, you can hardly avoid watering in the summer. The following method shows you whether the lawn needs water: Walk around your lawn a bit and pay attention to the blades of grass. If you straighten up quickly, the lawn does not need water, if it takes longer, it is too dry.

Daily watering is not necessary. It is better to blow up intensely once or twice a week. So the wet reaches the deeper layers of the soil and the roots of the grass continue to grow down. In the long term, such rooting makes plants less susceptible to drought.

Water seeps away very quickly, so you should allow time for watering. Leave the sprinkler in one place for a little longer and don't move it as often. For each irrigation, give between ten and 25 liters of water per square meter of lawn. You can easily check the quantity by placing a cylindrical glass on the lawn under the sprinkler. If the jar is filled two centimeters, you have given about 25 liters per square meter. You can determine the exact amount with a rain gauge or water meter. The best time to water is the morning. Evaporation is less than usual and the roots absorb moisture better.
