Dandelions, white clover or daisies often spread out in the garden and displace the actual lawn. So that in the end not only a weed meadow remains, but your lawn looks lush, healthy and green, we present the most important methods for controlling weeds here.

Up to 1, 000 plant species are known as weeds - the cause of their growth is usually a lack of nutrients. Normal lawn requires significantly more nutrients than weeds. If the demand cannot be met, there are gaps in the lawn and the more frugal weed grasses take up space. Especially in summer, when the sun is shining and the lawn does not get enough water, weeds, such as pickled clover, have it particularly easy - drought usually does not bother them much.

Other causes of weeds

In addition to a lack of nutrients on the lawn, bad grass can also be a cause of weeds. It is best not to buy cheap mixtures such as the "Berlin Tiergarten" - they usually only grow quickly, but do not form dense grass stems.

In addition, weeds grow especially in good lighting conditions. Therefore, never cut the grasses shorter than four centimeters, there will still be sufficient shade to prevent weeds from germinating.

Mechanically remove weeds from the lawn

If you already have a lot of weeds in the lawn, you should use mechanical control methods. The best measure is to scarify the lawn. To do this, mow the lawn to about two centimeters, then scarify the area lengthways and crossways and remove the weeds that have been torn out. Some weed plants, such as the dandelion or plantain, form a tap root, which can best be removed with a weed cutter. To do this, simply clamp the root with metal tines and pull it out of the ground.

Control weeds with chemical agents

If you are dealing with particularly stubborn weeds, you can use chemical weed killers. They contain active ingredients that consist of chemically replicated plant hormones. This triggers uncontrolled growth in all dicotyledonous plant species - the plants then die. The advantage of this method is that all monocotyledonous plants such as lawn grass are spared.

How to prepare the floor

In order for the chemical agents to work, you need to properly prepare the floor. Make sure the floor is warm and damp; the temperatures should be mild. Do not spray herbicides if night frost threatens or the soil has been dried out by heat and sun. It is important to water the soil vigorously one day before applying the herbicide. As a rule, it is advisable to fertilize again two weeks before.

However, do not mow the lawn shortly before. And make sure that the lawn stays dry for about eight hours after treatment.

How to use weed killers

We recommend dispensing the weed killer with a watering can. When using a backpack sprayer, the spray can also reach flower beds due to the wind. Avoid large-scale application. It is best to apply the herbicide only to the affected areas. And don't forget to clean the watering can thoroughly afterwards.

Combined product: weed killer and fertilizer

Combination products from granulated weed killer and fertilizer are another way of combating weeds. On the one hand, weeds are destroyed, and on the other hand, grasses receive nutrients. Experience has shown that success is not always guaranteed.

Again, make sure that the soil is moist when it is spread out so that the granules of the exterminator can be bound. Nevertheless, not every weed can be controlled with the same herbicide. So it is best to get advice from a specialist retailer and try first to determine which weed species it is. Gundermann, sour clover and buttercups in particular are difficult to control with common herbicides.

What to do about gaps in the lawn?

If the herbicide is successful, most of the weed plants will die about four to six weeks after control. After about eight weeks, loosen up any gaps with a hand scarifier or rake and sow new lawn seeds.
