If you want to paper and paint a blanket yourself, you should know certain tricks. Otherwise, the project can quickly become a nightmare. Gravity and dripping paste are just two of the factors that make work on the ceiling difficult. For this reason, cover the entire floor with a cover sheet in preparation. You should also remove any existing lamps and definitely switch off the fuses. If an old wallpaper still sticks to the ceiling, it must first be removed. The easiest way to do this is to moisten the woodchip wallpaper with a little water and detergent - this makes it easier to remove.

Papering and painting the ceiling: the most important things at a glance

  • Prepare work area (e.g. remove fuses, cover floor, eliminate trip hazards)
  • Remove old wallpaper completely
  • Pretreat the ceiling with a deep primer
  • Correct folding of the wallpaper strips
  • Remove bubbles
  • Use suitable coating technique

Tip 1: Treat the ceiling with a deep primer before wallpapering

To ensure that the new wallpaper sticks as well as possible later, you should treat your ceiling with a deep primer before wallpapering. This reduces the absorbency of the surface and both wallpaper and paint can be applied much more easily. In addition, if it should be necessary after a few years, the wallpaper can be removed more easily in this way. When applying the deep foundation, it is important to find the right measure. It should be generously applied and evenly distributed - but not drip from the ceiling. If you notice that the primer immediately disappears into the ceiling and moves into the wall, it is advisable to apply a second layer of deep primer directly. Depending on the product, the drying times are four to ten hours. Strictly adhere to the manufacturer's instructions before you start wallpapering. This is the best way to get the result.

Tip 2: Correctly fold the wallpaper strips

Correct folding of the soaked wallpaper strips is particularly important when wallpapering. To do this, fold in one end of the web by two thirds and the other by a third. Make sure that no areas remain uncovered when folded in, otherwise it can happen that the paste dries again during the soaking time - on average 10 to 15 minutes - and the wallpaper no longer has any adhesion.

Good to know: The folds when folding in must never be smoothed out, otherwise there will be visible kinks in the panels.

Before you attach the first sheet, you must measure it and add about five centimeters at each end. Then you should draw a so-called attachment line on the ceiling.

Tip 3: remove bubbles

Bubbles usually result from too much paste under the wallpaper. Some of these bubbles, especially the smaller ones, will disappear on their own after drying. However, if there are isolated large bubbles after drying, you can cut them in a cross shape, for example with a cutter knife. The air escapes and the incised areas can be soaked again with a little paste and pressed on.

If you are dealing with particularly large, stubborn air bubbles, you can remove them with glue spray. Simply pour a small amount of paste into the syringe and press into the bladder with the needle tip. Then carefully push out the paste so that it spreads well in the bladder. Again, you should pay close attention to the exposure time and only then press the wallpaper in the direction of the puncture point.

Tip 4: Use non-woven wallpaper for the ceiling

More and more craftsmen use so-called non-woven wallpaper when wallpapering ceilings. It is a processing-friendly alternative, but is just as long-lasting as a woodchip wallpaper. The big advantage: the paste is not applied to the back of the wallpaper, but directly to the ceiling. On the one hand, there is no soaking time, on the other hand, the wallpaper neither expands when it is wet nor shrinks again when it dries. All in all, handling is so much easier.

Tip 5: The right technique to paint a blanket

Even if it is difficult: Wait until you start painting the ceiling until the new wallpaper is completely dry. Make sure there is enough fresh air and leave the windows open while painting.

In practice, you rarely just paint the ceiling, but usually also the adjacent walls in the room. The following applies: Always start with the ceiling and only then devote yourself to the walls. Splashes of paint can hardly be avoided when painting ceilings.

If working on the ladder for too long is too exhausting, it is advisable to use a telescopic pole for painting. There are practical models in the hardware store. You can also convert a broomstick into a telescopic pole and simply attach a paint roller at the front.

Now it is time to delete in the correct order. With a blanket you start with the finishing touches. So first tackle the corners and edges. In order to be able to work cleanly and precisely, it is advisable to use a smaller paint roller, even a brush if necessary. Then you can paint with the large paint roller. Be careful not to take up too much paint - it cannot be evenly distributed on woodchip wallpaper and leaves unsightly webs. It is better to move the roller up and down a few times on a scraper grid and only then put it on the wall. By the way, professionals paint ceilings and walls in M- or W-shaped movements: This avoids undesirable shading and irregularities in the color.
