The door leaf is often referred to as a door - but this is not entirely true: the door leaf only denotes the moving part of the door. You can find out what different types of door leaves, door frames and door systems there are and what you should pay attention to when making your selection.

Door panel with cavity filling

Door panels with cavity filling are inexpensive. Due to their low weight, they are also easy to handle and their fittings hardly wear out. The cavity between two top layers is filled with cardboard honeycombs or a striped insert - this interior construction may become noticeable on the door surface over the years. With high-quality materials for cardboard honeycomb fillings, comfortable sound insulation values for interiors of around 28 decibels can be achieved.

Door leaf with tubular chip insert

Pipe chipboard completely fills the cavity between two cover layers. The chipboard consists of a continuous plate with horizontally drilled tubes. The doors weigh more than doors with cardboard honeycomb or cardboard strips, withstand greater mechanical loads and provide more comfort. Tubular chip doors are mostly used where better sound insulation is required. For special tasks, instead of the tube chip insert, there are special fillings built up in layers that increase fire, burglary and noise protection.

Frame doors

Solid wood doors consist of a surrounding frame and central paneling. Laminated wood from at least three layers is considered stable, frame doors made from single-layer solid wood or glued wood are considered susceptible to warping and cracking. They are very heavy and are therefore rarely used as interior doors. Frame doors are used in private areas, often as entrance doors.

The fold: The longitudinal edge of the door

Door edges need protection against bumps and wear. Most of the time, the long edges are made of veneered wood; The film covers the entire long edge, making it wear-resistant and easy to care for. Veneered long edges darken under the influence of light in the same way as the veneer surface of the door. Solid wood banding or banding with a surface made of veneer or laminate are durable, robust, wear-resistant and can be reworked. Thick edges are reinforced edges made of multi-layer glued veneers. They are extremely shock and impact resistant and, with additional rounding on the fold side, are particularly pleasant to the touch.

Rebated and dull doors

A rebated room door is a door with the door leaf resting on the frame - the specialist calls this "overlap overlay". Rebated doors close the gap between the frame and the door leaf very tightly and so less noise, air and light penetrate into the room. In the case of flush doors, on the other hand, the frame is installed flush in the wall - so no edge can be seen. That is why blunt doors are also called rebated doors.

In addition to connecting individual rooms in the house, interior doors contribute to thermal insulation and prevent drafts. So take your time when choosing the doors and choose carefully.

Door systems

Anyone who builds a new building can choose between steel frame, prefabricated door systems and floor frames. Steel frame systems are ideal for rooms with increased mechanical loads - for example in the basement and laundry room. They look less cozy and do not allow design selection or adaptation to the living style. Steel frames are already installed in the shell, the client has to coordinate various trades: the mason is responsible for the steel frame and the door fitter for the door.

Ready-to-install door systems come from a single source when they are ready for installation - there are clear competencies for doors and frames. The frame is mounted on the plastered masonry, construction damage to the frame and door does not occur. Higher acquisition costs of prefabricated door systems are worthwhile because they are set faster than walling in steel frames and do not have to be deleted.

With the frame stick, also called frame, the frame wood is screwed on one side against the wall. This type of door is often used when renovating because the window frame minimizes the loss of clear space and a wide variety of doors can be hung.

Door leaf surfaces

  • Solid wood: A door leaf made of solid wood is the epitome of natural living. It is particularly appealing that it is a unique piece. So if you choose a solid wood door leaf, you can be sure that no one has exactly the same door. The door leaf continues to darken over the years and, with good care, is ready for use and attractive for several decades.
  • Lacquer: A door leaf with a lacquer surface is particularly easy to care for and hard-wearing. You can choose between different colors and have the advantage that the door leaf can adapt to any furnishing style. With the right paint, you can make rooms appear brighter and larger.
  • CPL: A CPL-coated door leaf (Continuous Pressed Laminate) is scratch, abrasion, impact and solvent resistant, so very robust. It is particularly suitable for a household with children or animals. With the naked eye you can hardly distinguish between CPL and real wood.
  • Real wood veneer: just like a solid wood door leaf, a veneer door leaf is unique and ages over time. If the door leaf is protected with oil or wax, it is sufficient to wipe the surface from time to time with a duster.
  • Decor: A decor door leaf is the cheapest option among the door leaves. Decor is a special paper that has been refined with resins and varnishes. The door leaf replicates the real wood look perfectly and is therefore often used as an alternative to the real wood door leaf.

8 tips: How to recognize a good door

Doors should not only look good, they should also remain functional for a long time. In addition to connecting individual rooms in the house, they contribute to thermal insulation and prevent drafts. So take your time when choosing the doors and choose carefully.

Tip 1: subtle design

Pay attention to pleasant proportions and elegant timelessness - the door should not be the dominant feature, but should effectively complement and accentuate the flooring and furniture.

Tip 2: flawless surface

The surface of lacquered doors should look even - even when looking at the light from the door. If several doors of one model are to be installed, select specimens with little or no difference in grain and color. But wooden doors are always one-of-a-kind without an absolutely identical image - however, each one should show a symmetrical veneer image.

Tip 3: wood or replicas

Purists prefer doors made of real wood, but surfaces with wood reproductions often look deceptively real and usually cost less. Imitation wood and plastic surfaces are practical for utility and utility rooms as well as cellars.

Tip 4: perfect workmanship

Basically, it is important that doors are manufactured in accordance with the applicable DIN standards. In any case, the door fits into the intended wall opening. Pay attention to the execution of details such as frame mitres, styling strips and milling of the striking plates. Door edges should be slightly rounded, they are less prone to injury and are easier to keep clean - even if you later paint the doors, coatings stick better. Slide your hand over the upper transverse edge: does it have a smooth surface that is easy to clean for the duster? Ideally, additional strips are made of the same material as the door - solid or veneered strips in the same type of wood as the door surface are considered robust and darken evenly with the door surface; the sound of foiled moldings can set off from the door color after prolonged exposure to light.

Tip 5: Easy assembly

So that you can easily install the door, it should be possible to shorten it by a few centimeters without revealing the inside. Quality doors end at the bottom edge with solid wood and wooden material. The distance between the floor and the door should be at least five and a maximum of eight millimeters.

Tip 6: solid fittings

Fittings should be adjustable without unhooking the door leaf and should be infinitely adjustable with a conventional screwdriver. Different fittings and surfaces for every taste should be available.

Tip 7: Safe closing

Whether a door squeaks or closes lightly, quietly and tightly depends on the precise coordination of the door and frame, the quality of the lock and the shape, fit and elasticity of the seal in the rebate. The sliding properties of the hinges - there are maintenance-free hinges and those that have to be lubricated regularly - and the professional assembly of the elements influence the comfort when closing the doors.

Tip 8: flexible frame

If the frame is equipped with a planing nose, unevenness in the wall can be easily compensated. The frame cladding should be wide enough to compensate for dimensional inaccuracies in the wall hole. Adjustable frames are ideal, they can be precisely adapted to different wall thicknesses.
