Wood in the bathroom creates a cozy feeling of wellbeing

According to a study by the Forsa research institute, eleven million Germans plan to invest in their bathroom this or next year - they want to completely replace the wet room or refurbish parts, add missing items or bring the styling up to date. Many builders and renovators are flirting with wood - it opens up a wide range of individual design options: No two types of wood are the same, and not even two boards are the same. Different colors and grain, density and shape of the material always guarantee an interesting look.

Warm colors

Wood conducts heat poorly, which is why walls and floors made of the natural material always feel pleasantly warm. The bath water stays chubby longer in a wooden tub than in cast or acrylic tubs. People are even less freezing in a bathroom that is designed with soothing earth and wood tones: they pretend to the brain one or two degrees more room heat, the heating valve can be turned back quietly.

The trend is towards furniture and floors made from dark hardwoods such as wenge and mahogany, teak and American walnut - particularly attractive to combine with stainless steel or granite. These hard woods are expensive compared to other types of wood, however, because of their narrower cell structure, they are tough and durable. These imported types of wood are moisture-resistant and symbolize prosperity and solidity. Their dark surfaces require intensive care; Towel fluff and dust are unfortunately more obvious than on light wood. If you want sturdy wood from local stocks, choose larch - the wood is lighter than tropical wood, but it also has effective self-preserving components.

Light woods

Those who value suitability for everyday use and quick cleaning decide against the trend and choose wood types that are cheaper and more practical in the bathroom. These include native deciduous trees such as maple, birch and beech and coniferous woods such as spruce and pine. Their light surfaces cover up carelessness when cleaning and also reflect more light - a trick against tightness in the small bathroom. Morning muffle and returning home also benefit: Brightness puts you in a good mood. Soft cream and white tones ideally complement light wood tones. Novel finishing methods and sealing techniques protect the sensitive material from water stains.

The following types of wood are generally good for the bathroom:

  • Oak

  • maple
  • mango
  • Finnish birch
  • walnut
  • teak
  • jaw
  • Spruce
  • larch

Advantages of wood in the bathroom

Wood regulates the humidity in the room and creates a healthy room climate. The material even has an antibacterial effect: Types of wood such as pine, oak and larch absorb and kill bacteria, on the surface and even inside the wood - the scientific studies carried out by the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry and the German Institute for Food Technology prove this. The wood information service nevertheless warns: Nevertheless, the bathroom should be ventilated regularly. Permanent moisture creates breeding grounds for mold.

The arrangement of the slats for the substructure is based on the course of the subsequent clothing: a horizontal substructure carries vertically mounted profiles and vice versa. A ceiling covering is installed with an all-round wall clearance of about five centimeters, a wall covering should end two to three centimeters before the ceiling.

Protection and care for the wood in the bathroom

If you properly install, seal and maintain wood in the bathroom, bath steam and shower puddles cannot do any damage. So that the wood does not mold and the coating does not burst, it is important that it is adequately sealed and checked. If you discover cracks in the paint, it is best to sand and renew immediately. Here, among other things, boat paint is suitable - as the name suggests, this is absolutely water-resistant. Raw wood can also be treated with hard wax oil, for example. However, you should do this two or three times a year. Here you should choose a type of sealing, because there is no paint on oiled wood. Walls, floors and wooden bathtubs only need to be wiped with a damp cloth and rubbed with hard wax oil two or three times a year - then water will not swell the wood. Hard waxed surfaces also let water and dirt roll off, they do not leave stains and deposits.

Small scratches are sanded with fine sandpaper and then lightly oiled. Unsealed wood in the vicinity of ceramics or stainless steel should be wiped off immediately, especially if sharp cleaning agents are used in the case of large plaster - these should not get on the wood.

Prevention of mold and fungi

Wood protection with chemical agents against fungi and insects is not necessary in the bathroom. In areas where there is a risk of splashing water - only around the shower and bathtub - pine wood should be avoided, as it can quickly form blue stains under moisture. Wood for the bathroom should be treated before installation, and the grooves and tongues on floor elements and profiled wood - with wax, oil or open-pore glaze without fungus and insect repellent agents. It is easier and faster if you use finished profiled wood.

Wooden floor in the bathroom

A wooden floor easily withstands a few splashes of water and damp bathroom air - if you choose the right type of wood and an expert professionally lays the flooring and seals the wooden floor. In comparison, beech and maple swell and shrink more than larch or oak. Woodworkers recommend oiled and / or waxed parquet. Lacquer repels water more effectively, but water penetrates into mini-damage to the coating - the wood turns gray and the lacquer peels off. Repairing it is time-consuming and expensive. Oiled wood, on the other hand, absorbs water quickly, but it also releases it quickly - every oil layer reduces water absorption, and the woodworker applies up to four layers to the sanded surface. A professional substructure with a vapor barrier prevents condensate from jamming under the wooden covering. Tight-fitting baseboards make air circulation difficult; Masters of their trade assemble the profiles with a joint to the covering or mill out the strips on the back.
